She sends it on a whim.

Expects an undeliverable, ‘return to sender’ at worst (HG Wells’ site is slow and looks like it hasn’t been updated in at least a decade so Myka’s only half sure the address is still legit) and a glossy author photo with a printed autograph at best. What she doesn’t expect, is an actual answer, a letter delivered to her front door, written on expensive looking card stock with a MS OPHELIA BERING printed on it in beautiful writing. Ophelia instead of Myka, because she was at once too embarrassed and too worried at being found out to send her first name. But here she is, back from what was maybe one of her most boring days of teaching—brand new freshmen who dread Russian lit always make her question why she went into this field, especially during the first week of school, all those students newly released from home and ready to make it everyone else’s problem—with a response that suggests signs of life? HG Wells, or the person who wrote this letter for her, since, Myka assumes, Ms. Wells likely has assistants to do that sort of thing, has very pretty handwriting. So pretty in fact, that Myka is momentarily transfixed and almost reads the whole letter right there on her porch. She catches herself before she does, looks away after reading her name and puts the letter back in the envelope. She’s going to go inside, eat, then take a bath. Read the whole five page reply (FIVE! PAGES!!!) while she unwinds and savours the fact that her favourite author not only wrote back to her, but did so with seeming gusto.

Smiling (and feeling silly for doing so though she’s alone—it was hardly a gushing tribute, really just an acknowledgment of HG’s talent and still… she feels somehow caught out) she thinks about what her mother would say in this moment. Something about holding out hope and lights at the ends of tunnels and things always working out in the end. Myka isn’t really one for cliches, even familiar ones. But, turning the letter in her hands, she can allow that perhaps today wasn’t entirely terrible.

She’ll give the universe that.
