I just watched this local indie musical called Changing Partners and it’s this excellent experimental film where the story tells of two lovers–an older one named Alex and a younger one named Cris–but the actors switch between scenes, and the narrative subtly changes details to match the relationship but remains consistent overall
Like, there are instances in which Alex and Cris are both male or female, or ones where one is male and one is female
And when Alex, who’s 45, is gay, he has the mannerisms and speech patterns of an older gay Filipino, whereas when she’s a lesbian she’s more butch and has the mannerisms of an older lesbian Filipina
There’s less change with Cris, who’s a millennial at 29, so gay male Cris isn’t that different from straight male Cris, and female Cris is pretty consistent overall
But other subtle changes include their home changing depending on the couple–like, The Straights live in more traditional two to three story houses in the Philippines whereas The Gays live in more modern apartments or town houses
Even their drinks change, like some will drink wine, some whisky, some beer
Their small grievances change, the details of their lives with each other, like, fem!Cris with fem!Alex is bisexual whereas male!Cris with male!Alex is gay
BUT the narrative is seamless, the themes are universal, you never get lost in the story because even with subtle differences, the main story is still consistent and ongoing. The characters remain the same: Cris is a bit directionless and more kind, emotional and afraid of conflict whereas Alex is more driven and stable but less forgiving. Those core personalities never change.
Even with only four actors in the whole movie, and technically only two characters, I never got bored
This film was fantastic. I’m glad I got to watch it.
