i've seen a lot of bad grey anime art of darker skinned characters over the years but this one is hard to believe is even supposed to be sincere it's bordering on purple

they went for the highly clichéd dark skin-white hair combo (again) but were so against actually giving her skin a dark value that the contrast that makes that design choice so popular in the first place doesn't even exist. it looks terrible. unless it turns out she's supposed to be a walking corpse it's shit, and even then. a little bit of saturation and warmth and immediately it stops wildly clashing with her hair and gold design elements

I sometimes see arguments online that these edits don't adhere to the game's art style, so I wanted to point out that you can actually maintain the cool/pale skin tone and bright faces as well while still making black/dark-skinned characters look like they might actually be alive. (kept the white lower lip in this case because I think that's makeup)

All I did here was slightly shift the hue to the right, increase saturation, and darken a little then add some contrast to the shadows and highlights to make the face brighter and the chest darker. It's clearly not an issue with art style. The artist chose their colour palette and the design team approved the final asset for use in game.

And if your argument is that the grey skin is actually meant to represent a darker skin tone than in either of the edits above,

you can do that too, but if you go any darker you start to see what I poor job I did separating the skin from the rest of the image.

Game devs who make their dark-skinned characters grey are making a choice. I can only speculate as to why, but I can say with certainty that it's not adherence to a style. This is a bad choice by Intelligent Systems and I think the character artists who work there should feel insulted by people implying they can't do better.
