I don’t want to be told that I’m brave. I don’t want to hear how inspiring I am. I don’t want to be told that I’m lucky because I’m not worse, as if I should celebrate. Or told I’m doing so well “considering everything”. I don’t want thoughts and prayers. Or told “get better soon”. I don’t want pity. I’ve heard it all before. Stop.

-"it only hurts a little" is still pain

-"I can ignore it" is still pain

-"I can cope with/manage it" is still pain

-"it's bearable" is still pain

-"I can push through it" is still pain

-"it doesn't hurt that much" is still pain

-"it doesn't stop me from doing x" is still pain

You don't need to be in agonizing pain to be in pain.

There needs to be more allowance for disabled people to be angry. People want us to be somber and quiet. Sad at our condition and how hard life is. And yeah that’s allowed. But we’re also allowed to be fucking pissed off. People don’t help, people infantilise, governments don’t supply enough support, places aren’t accessible. This isn’t momentary. This is forever. There are so many things we can’t do and so many things we can’t be. Life isn’t fair. It likely won’t get fair enough for most to be comfortable. Yeah, I’m grieving, I’m sad, but I’m also FUCKING ANGRY.

On this beautiful disability pride month can we talk about how eating healthy is incredibly difficult when you’re disabled? If I can’t get out of bed to make food then I might not eat, or I might end up spending far more money than I want on takeout, and hurting my finances. And those meal delivery kits are cost prohibitive and rely on you having enough spoons to, y’know, actually make the food.

People don’t talk a lot about disabled people’s struggles with basic survival skills, but this one is huge and important and something we have to do 3 times a day for optimal health — and when your health is already suboptimal, it can be incredibly dehumanizing to hear people just say things like,

“Well, have you tried going vegan?”

Accommodations are not special, they’re not a leg up, they’re not a benefit. They’re not putting anyone ahead in the race, nor are they taking anything away from others.

there's something so raw and soul crushing about spending your late childhood+teen years suicidal then growing up and actually wanting to live, after an ungodly effort, only to see your health deteriorate because of chronic illness.

yesterday i was heading to class and i was hobbling my ass off with my cane bc its icy as fuck out. and i ended up in a conversation with this person bc i told them the entrance they were headed for was blocked. like a minute later she said "yeah i wanted to be sure you were ok" and kinda gestured toward my cane. and in my mind im thinking "ugh another person who thinks i cant do shit bc i walk with a cane". but then she rlly pleasantly surprised me and said that she knew it was hard to use a mobility aid in snow/ice. and i shouldn't have to be impressed with that but i rlly was?? not only did she not offer me help that i didnt ask for, they understood genuine struggles mobility aid users face on a daily basis.

anyway you dont have to know every single thing about mobility aid users. but try to at least learn a bit about a variety of aids. learn what some common problems are, what you can do to help, how to approach someone who is visibly struggling, and when it's best to leave someone alone. we do notice when people treat us like people instead of objects.

I don't understand why my parents don't want me doing the same thing the entire day, like what does it do to you? How does it harm you when i'm only reading books about disability?

So, i remember these times when i was planning on buying four books with my own money about disabilities of all kinds, and when i came back to my mother holding them, she asked what i was wanting to buy and i explained to her or let her see the back.

She was fine with the purchases, of course knowing that i'm buying it all with my own money so she couldn't really withhold the purchase, but still remarked or asked that if i was becoming obsessed with something. She phrased the question like a concern.

I brushed it off and didn't reply, but i was turning her words over and over in my head as i was confused as to what is wrong with doing that. She thought i was obsessed with disability, so to say, which is wrong.

To her, these problems don't matter to her because she's not diagnosed with anything, but i am. So i was trying to educate myself on how best to interact with them, as i'm only autistic so i wouldn't know much.

Now that i have my wheelchair home (yey) ive learned 3 things

1. My funiture needs to be mooved

1.5 being able to transport my cat anywhere is awesome

2 doorways fucking suck

3. The idea of rolling outside is achualy quite scarry

Finding out that people do not care that youre in excrutiating pain was a horrible discovery, when my disability was first developing. In fact, they will go out of their way to glare at you for *inconveniencing* them. This revelation was horrible for my mental health. Have some fucking empathy, or sympathy, or something! Ask if people are okay! Just be nice in general, dont make peoples day worse.
