✝ : “you are very welcome. although, perhaps i do feel a bit bad for not being able to provide the newfound custom of candy. that is how most celebrate nowadays. it’d be criminal of me, as an anthropologist, to not properly observe a holiday custom. may i offer you something sweet to eat instead? perhaps a cafe?” 

strangers wearing masks asking you to go eat with them on halloween? not weird at all. 

“If you’re an anthropologist, wouldn’t it be more effective to watch people go trick-or-treating instead of spending the night with a guy like me? ” While half of him wants to take up the man’s invite, and the other half is questioning why this man he has just met was trying hard to satisfy his candy cravings.

“But, if you’re willing to pay for it, I guess I don’t mind sharing a bit of my time... ♪“ Oops, seems like his desire for free sweets won out instead.

✝ : “you may be right there. it certainly isn’t laced with anything like that. killing with no reason is unacceptable, no?” 

he reached into his pocket to pull out a rather disheveled, black surgical mask. this was all he had to offer.

This doesn’t look “gently used” to him. In fact it doesn’t look like he could even use it for its intended purpose, wrinkly and all, but it was already out for him to take. 

“Uh, thanks.”  He kind of regrets this.

“That defeats the whole purpose though?”

“Well, as long as it isn’t laced with poison or weird magic.”  He’s too used to Ecchan joking about these things, so he’s taking precautions.

“Ghostly ninja mage? Are you sure the supreme lords of Halloween will allow such a combination?”

Unlike most people who have disappeared into thin air and into this unusual realm, Ritsu was only mildly annoyed and disoriented. Panic? It would certainly do no good to act in any irrational manner in a desperate attempt to make sense of his environment. Tiredly rubbing his eyes, he makes a quick scan of his area. Obviously, he wasn’t in Yumenosaki anymore. Possible locations run through his mind, but it was clear as day he wasn't even in Japan anymore. Perhaps this is just a weird dream that he should try to wake up from soon. Yet he finds himself moving, natural curiosity driving his aim.

He hears a somewhat familiar voice, although it is not one he can place a name on. Something quick flies just above his shoulder, then back around to its presumed owner, and he can catch a faint glimpse of silvery hair in the distance and most importantly, what looks like the Yumenosaki uniform. Sure enough, he confirmed his suspicions as he approached his fellow schoolmate. In fact, he has seen him before; god forbid he knew him as a friend of Rei, but he distinctly remembers the unusual boy grabbing his hand and dragging him to the Venus Cup a while back. It’s enough to make him reconsider engaging with this person, but he knows he has to if he prioritizes his survival. “Hey,” he taps his shoulder, “Do you know where we might be?”

He had witnessed some pretty extraordinary stuff since setting foot in this city, much weirder than what he was accustomed to at Yumenosaki. He had seen people materialize objects seemingly out of nowhere, as well as the transformation of simple objects into something much more remarkable. At the very least, these people didn’t seem dangerous, despite the magic they possessed. 

So when he notices a small tiger cub following him, he assumes it was somebody’s magic pet too. That’s what usually happens in magic-fantasy fiction anyway. Naturally he makes sure to keep a distance, after all it is a tiger and he didn’t want to accidentally overstep any boundaries.

“You should scram,“ he talks as if the cub understands human speech, “your owner is probably worried... And I don’t want to be accused as a pet stealer.”
