When We Run
It had taken some time for Levi to shake himself form his depression, to get back on track and resume his job as a paramedic. The next struggle was settling back into the strange hour, but with a little effort it seemed he’d fallen into them once again.
On weeks he had free time in the wee hours of the night, he would often find himself curled up with a book or catching up on the latest shows. Weeks where his free time fell during the day he would seek out the local farmers markets, or go on a jog through the park. His days had become almost... tame.
There were times he still found himself in tears without fully recalling why, or angry for no good reason at all, but they were becoming fewer. He’d considered adopting a pet to help fight off the feelings of loneliness, but he wondered if any animal would adjust to his schedule the same way he did.
Today despite the current hour being nearly 1am, he felt a burning desire to run, somewhere other than on the treadmill in his living room. He grabbed a light sweater, mostly for appearances sake, before putting on his runners and heading out.
It wasn’t far from his apartment to the nearest park, 15 minutes or so. The path through was gravel, lit with lampposts every so often. It was enough to see the path or someone coming, but not enough to see their face until they drew close. Levi ran with headphones in, an upbeat track playing through them, and easily the world faded away for a while
After some time Levi’s pace slowed as he reached a bench, putting his hands behind his head and breathing deep to recenter himself. He pulled one earbud from his ear, sitting heavily on the bench and muttering “Fuck.” as he looked up to the sky.
