record stores of... COACHELLA coachella was more than anything i could have ever anticipated last weekend, and i'm probably gonna have to do a talk episode on it because there's too much to say. i wasn't too impressed with this record store though, but then again i was running on very little sleep and had been boiling in the desert sun for three days straight. everything was, or seemed to be, supremely overpriced. i guess that's no surprise though? the staff was really nice, left everyone be while they browsed which i appreciated. they had racks of current artists playing this year, as well as artists past. tons of used records including folk, reggae and soul. 45's and 7 inches, and cassettes. no CDs in sight. if you're at the festival for the second weekend, i'd say it's worth a glance, especially if you're looking to purchase vinyl of your favorite for the weekend because it's absolutely bound to be there. my favorite things i saw are pictured in the scroll through images, i just loved the artwork so i definitely plan on checking out those artists. also, inside of the rare bins there was a Godzilla score which i thought was pretty cool.Â
the coachella record store is... shockingly... located inside of coachella lmao and obviously today is the last day to visit! it's near the first set of food stands when you enter the festival, near the boutique.

record stores of... LYON, FRANCE: Dangerhouse
when i knew i was going to make a stop in Lyon while in France and i came across this shop on google, i immediately knew i had to go. i was first attracted to Dangerhouse because of the iconic bright yellow sign, which gave me major Haçienda / Factory 51 vibes. i was determined to go, desperately hoping to find tons of Stone Roses and Oasis records... which... i didn’t lmao. i talked to the owner of the shop, asking if there’s any connection to what i was suspecting, and there wasn’t. he went on to say Dangerhouse was his favorite punk label in the 1970s / early 80s, so he opened the store as an homage. i’d honestly never heard of the label before, but upon reading more, i found out that Dangerhouse actually released some music from the first wave of punk that came out of California and the western united states altogether. the shop keeper was super cool and excited to talk about music. i’d honestly highly reccommend checking this shop out if you end up in Lyon or if you live near or in Lyon. it was one of my favorites i went to while in france, and possibly ever. i didn’t end up purchasing anything but a patch of the shop’s logo, mostly because i didn’t find anything i was dying for but still wanted to support. i’m 100% gonna be making it a priority to go back and talk to the shopkeeper some more and hopefully pick up a few records.

our first guest playlist! zain and i have been good friends now for quite some time, about 7 years, and i’m excited to have her on board making this playlist for levitation!
“At first, I wanted to make a playlist exclusively of things kraut rock, but by the time I was done I ended up with something kinda representing the ways in which funk, jazz, psych/kraut/rock, r&b and hiphop are all tied together, a melting pot of music, from contemporary artists to revered greats and legends. All of the musicians here cross over in at LEAST one way, be they direct influences, collaborators, or sampled. RIP Junie Morrison and Jaki Liebezeit.” - zain

record stores of… LYON, FRANCE: Sofa Records
Sofa is located just off of the Pont De La FeuillĂ©e bridge in Lyon, sitting on Rue d’AlgĂ©rie and Rue Gorbon. i won’t lie, i was super overwhelmed as this was my first stop in Lyon. i was overexcited and maybe did not give this place the absolute proper look-around i should have. but nonetheless, what i did see was super cool. the place is organized to a t, one of the most put together shops i’ve ever been to. there were still some racks to dig through, but for the most part, everything had a place. Modern Lovers and Arctic Monkeys records lined the walls, and a fresh La Femme release welcomed us in the window. i tried looking for their first record, Psycho Tropical Berlin, but didn’t find it anywhere so that was kind of disappointing, i've wanted to get my hands on that for a few years now. came across a ton of Abba (do the French love Abba or something??? there were SO MANY ABBA RECORDS EVERYWHERE…) Sharon Jones (which was really exciting for me, i've just gotten into her in recent months), and obviously some Serge Gainsbourg (who i admittedly have not listened to because i've heard things about him that have put me off lmao). didn’t get to talk to the shopkeeper because he was busy talking to someone already, but he seemed welcoming and helpful. can i just mention how every single shop i went into, the owner was working? i literally love that so much? thanks? i don't know, that just shows such a genuine interest and i live for it.Â

record stores of... LILLE, FRANCE: Quelque Part Records
this shop is about a 1 mile walk if you're arriving from the lille europe or flanders stations. they have lots of newer records, but still a decent used selection. cool bunches of mostly 1990s music magazines, which included a ton of interviews and photos of potatoes (Oasis) and Pulp (Jarvis not orange). i found a vinyl copy of The Horrors album Strange House, unsure if it was an original or the reissue. some deluxe vinyl including The Avalanches Wildflower and The xx's I See You were available. also found Violens' second release, True, which i literally... never ever see anywhere. Violens are great but they've been dead since that second release and i have no idea if they're making new music anytime soon. that's another story but i genuinely gasped out loud upon finding it and would have purchased it if i didn't already own it. although, i did buy Warpaint's The Fool. i literally cannot find this anywhere in-shop in america?? i've been meaning to purchase it since like probably 2011, so i'm super stoked on finally owning that, super overdue. highly recommend stopping in Quelque Part Records, even to just chat with the shopkeeper because he was super kind and really knows exactly what he's got in there.Â
