I have a headcanon that Hermione insists her children attend some primary muggle schooling before Hogwarts, just as she had done. Now, imagine Arthur Weasley attending his grandchild’s science fair, being the ultra proud grandfather….and yet also completely geeking out over absolutely EVERYTHING.

All the muggle teachers would think he was being so adorable, “pretending” not to know how potato batteries and mini-volcanoes work, fawning over the hard work the kids did on even the simplest the projects. And he comes every year, because after the kids have aged out (”gone on to some boarding school in Scotland,” the teachers say over bad coffee in the break room, “they didn’t seem the type”), he gets an honorary invitation to the fair every year, because he never stops making the kids feel smart and good.

the horrible dramatic irony you experience as an audience when harry returns with his body and everyone starts clapping and cheering, blissfully unaware of the absolute nightmare he’s just been through? the sudden mood whiplash when fleur screams in horror and the upbeat band music falters and stops? the horrified silence that follows, broken only by harry’s choked sobbing and amos diggory’s agonised screams of “THAT’S MY SON! THAT’S MY BOY!” ? harry clinging desperately to cedric’s corpse when they try to pull him away?

I think the best piece of character design advice I ever received was actually from a band leadership camp I attended in june of 2017.

the speaker there gave lots of advice for leaders—obviously, it was a leadership camp—but his saying about personality flaws struck me as useful for writers too.

he said to us all “your curses are your blessings and your blessings are your curses” and went on to explain how because he was such a great speaker, it made him a terrible listener. he could give speeches for hours on end and inspire thousands of people, but as soon as someone wanted to talk to him one on one or vent to him, he struggled with it.

he had us write down our greatest weakness and relate it to our biggest strength (mine being that I am far too emotional, but I’m gentle with others because I can understand their emotions), and the whole time people are sharing theirs, my mind was running wild with all my characters and their flaws.

previously, I had added flaws as an after thought, as in “this character seems too perfect. how can I make them not-like-that?” but that’s not how people or personalities work. for every human alive, their flaws and their strengths are directly related to each other. you can’t have one without the other.

is your character strong-willed? that can easily turn into stubbornness. is your character compassionate? maybe they give too many chances. are they loyal? then they’ll destroy the world for the people they love.

it works the other way around too: maybe your villain only hates the protagonist’s people because they love their own and just have a twisted sense of how to protect them. maybe your antagonist is arrogant, but they’ll be confident in everything they do.

tl;dr “your curses are your blessings, and your blessings are your curses” there is no such thing as a character flaw, just a strength that has been stretched too far.

complimenting japanese artists

There are plenty of templates for asking permission from Japanese artists on pixiv and twitter to repost their fanworks, but almost none about how to compliment their art and let them know their work is appreciated, so I thought I’d put together a few stock phrases you can use to let an artist know you think their work is great!!

ああああ = “aaaaaaa/ahhhhh” (use as many あ as u feel like ahaha)

_____さんの絵が大好きです！ = “i love your art!” (use artist’s name in blank, usually in only japanese characters, for example ▲むっこ▲スパコミレ57b on twitter’s name is just むっこ, ignore anything after an “@”）

_____は可愛すぎますよ～！ = “____ is too cute~!” (insert ship or character name, you can get their name in japanese on their wiki pages or myanimelist, check their pixiv to see what their art is tagged with to find the ship’s name in japanese if you don’t already know it, or you can replace with (artist name)さんの絵 to say the artist’s art is too cute)

(きれいな/可愛い/素晴らしい)絵をいつも描いてくれてありがとうございます！ = “thank you for always drawing pretty/cute/amazing art!” (pick ONE adjective)

_____さんの絵は凄く(可愛い/かっこいい/素晴らしい)ですねえ！= “your art is REALLY cute/cool/amazing!” (pick ONE adjective)

_____さんの絵最高です！/____最高です！= “your art is the best!” / “(character/ship) is the best!”

feel free to use as many exclamation points, hearts ♡♡♡, and kaomoji as you feel like in between sentences!

also for sentence enders, i just included a few random ones but feel free to exchange よ/ねえ as much as you like, but it’s kinda weird to use them at the end of every sentence. its also weird if you use the same one at the end all your sentences. also just a generic “～" at the end is good too!

[edit]: thanks to toukochu for pointing out it should be 描いてくれてありがとうございます instead of 描いてありがとうございます and that the は particle was unnecessary for 最高です！
