As someone whose whole lair is MGs and Primals, I feel like I’ve wasted tons of breeding and gems on dragons that aren’t special anymore. Yeah, I’m an elitist, but what’s the point in devaluing other people’s dragons because a few little pissbabies wouldn’t shut up about their whole lives being ruined by some stupid pixels? Great. This update begs the question of why we don’t have a buyable scroll to customize our dragon’s exact colors. Or why they don’t rerelease Imp scrolls for a couple hundred gems. ALL dragons need to be easily obtainable, right?

The previous eye system was incredibly unbalanced and unfair, yeah. Just bringing back the eye vials (and maybe increasing the rate which multigaze/primal appear) would’ve been a solution that would’ve fixed that without screwing tons of people over & keeping an aspect of challenge to make the game more fun. That, and, oh I don’t know, not waiting three fucking years before finally deciding to do something.

thoughts on the new update? what sort of impacts do you think it will have on fr's economy as a whole, and also smaller aspects like the g1 market and special eyes market?

It's going to take some time for all of us to figure out the full implications of this as it sinks in and we start to see behaviors change, but here's a smattering of the thoughts I've had.

My Personal Thoughts

I hate to be a downer lol, but I dislike it. One of my main personal interests in FR is in collecting rare/unusual dragons (I am not a G1 collector; I just like special IDs, interesting colors, primals, etc.). I personally found it very satisfying to hunt down primals with matchy colors and gene them. So that sense of satisfaction is pretty much completely gone now, as is the thrill of hatching a primal.

500kt is also absurdly inexpensive, cheaper than a pair of Skydancer scrolls. You can earn that much in less than a week of playing Fairgrounds, and most players should have no trouble earning that sum in a few weeks of selling fodder and items, coli, etc. So I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that Primals/MGs will now be quite common, depending on restock rates.

The whole point of a game is that you should be able to put in effort in order to achieve goals, and you have to give players goals to work towards (especially long-time players). If everything was too easy to get then the game would hold no challenge.

I don't think it's a bad idea that they turned this into another much-needed treasure sink and addressed the concerns of players who wanted old dragons to have special eyes, but the extremely low price is frankly a huge disappointment to me.

Economic Impacts

So the obvious answer here is that the primal/MG market is tanked, which is especially relevant for G1s. All primal/MG G1s as well as otherwise special primal/MG dragons have now been devalued significantly. Special eyes will still be desirable, but they just won't be as rare or as valuable as they once were. This is kind of a bummer because FR, compared to many other browser-based pet/sim games, doesn't actually have a lot of rare/limited/exclusive items.

The vials are also a new treasure sink, which I do think is necessary, but I'm not sure how it's going to work out. People will be G&Ging and exalting like crazy to afford the new vials, so I'm not sure it will make a dent in the gem:treasure ratio.

Other than that, I can't think of anything right now... Maybe more thoughts will come to me later or readers will have their own thoughts to share.

This is pretty much my take on it as well. It doesn’t ruin the game for me that the admins released eye vials (with the burning hatred they seem to have for making anything rare/exclusive/hard to obtain outside the coli, in hindsight it was inevitable), but it is kind of annoying.

Primals and MGs in the perfect color have gone from one of the hardest to obtain dragons on the site to something you can get for less than half the price of a gem gene... this has totally killed my motivation to get a g1 MG for each flight. Now that I don’t have to find a way to make the colors work (or risk a scatter), I can just put a vial on whoever, special eyes have gone from being a fun special project to being like a quaternary gene that I’m opting into ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Guess I’m glad I only sunk money into a couple of them.

idk, I wish they had gone about this a better way - eye rarity being hereditary and scattersights coming back in limited ways would have been a better first step imo.

(also it’s hilarious they reassured us that vials of scattersight won’t be coming back like... wow... phew... an objectively worse version of the thing you just released is staying retired, awesome...)

the eye thing fucking sucks. congrats on ruining the g1 special eye market, a lot of the special id market, and other shit like that. the reason people love g1s so much is because getting a rare rng thing is cool and rewarding. getting special eyes is cool and rewarding because it's rare and random. what's next? eliminate stocks in treasure marketplace for 25kt because it's not air to have it as rng? fuck this, man.

They actually came back, 3 years later, threw the vials at the community and said "Here's the eyes you all wanted, and fuck the people who have spent a lot of time and/or money on these things. We aren't bringing back scattersights like we promised but also this update makes them useless so it doesn't even matter. Enjoy your new treasure sink, peace."

I'm lucky I never paid that much for any eye related shit but goddamn. Legit I can't even imagine being someone who did. Good thing a lot of those players seem ok with it but also you can't blame anyone who feels like it's a huge slap in the face. You can't blame anyone who is going to quit after this. You can't just say they're greedy or 'shouldn't have spent their money in the first place' and brush them off; this literally came out of nowhere with no indication that it was ever going to happen. No one believed this was coming so naturally they played with what they had.

Imho it was way, waaay too late for an update such as this. I've always thought that we should have at least been able to pick progen eye types from the very start, but understood why that would be a bad idea now due to how many people paid thousands of gems for scattersights. A shitty situation but for the sake of fairness, one that can't be changed. But staff went and did it anyway!! And then some!!! The vials are so weirdly cheap too like it literally feels like they'd had enough and went "fine, just take them."

If I was to pick a somewhat different way of handling this update, I would've vouched for handing out some clanbound vials through galore maybe idk. Give everyone a primal vial or two. The eye types from uncommon to rare could have been made into treasure vials. It would have been better than nothing while still largely retaining the novelty of hatching special-eyed dragons.

Also anyone who ever bought special eyed g1s from me, I'm sorry. I promise I used those gems for a good purpose

The callout post model of holding people accountability is a complete failure lol, it got to be tested for an entire decade and it's literally just as likely to hold harmful individuals accountable as it's likely to harm innocents or even allow abusive people and hate group members to further victimize their targets. It's track record is such that participants in callout culture can literally never actually tell if they're helping or if they're furthering an abuser's DARVO campaign, it works like tabloid headlines where even if a callout is completely disproven a majority of people will remember the original accusations more than their refutation, and nobody will ever be held accountable for lying. It's not a good model, it's not gotten better with time, and it's about as accurate in dispensing social punishments as forcing every social media user to participate in Russian roulette. Been way past time for it to be abandoned completely.
