I think one of Gideon's funniest moments is when she learns that Pal and Dulcie have a Thing and she's so distraught about it because she feels like a complete homewrecker. Like she just made one of her first ever friends, this weird little man whom she diagnosed as Bitchless upon first sight, and then she learns he actually does have A Single Bitch but it's the woman she's been flirting with nonstop since she got there. So naturally her reaction is to start mourning for him because literally, how was her new bestie The Most Bitchless Man Alive ever supposed to compete with her
A truthberry might make you tell the truth... But a lieberry? A lieberry will loan you books
[sexting] no live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.
also re:people assuming that the thematic implications of tlt are unintentional. this pops up soooo much with the way that social prejudices and strictures are held up within john’s empire. like yes on the surface things are cool and neofuturist and liberal - same sex relationships are normalized! women are political leaders and scholars and swordfighters and revolutionaries! this guywoman calls herself a prince! - but there’s also significant evidence of the continued existence of misogyny, patriarchy, strict gender roles and generally binary gender presentation, etc etc etc. gestures emphatically to everything relating to mercymorn. and it seems that john is not only complicit in these social systems, and not only an active participant in them, but at times even the font and root of them. gestures even more emphatically to everything relating to mercymorn.
and instead of examining what muir might be trying to say by having these seemingly at-odds ideals present in the same universe and stemming from the same father-god-emperor-king, tlt fans are so quick to write off all of this as “well, the world building just isn’t that thorough” or “it’s probably muir subconsciously writing women through a lens of internalized misogyny” or even “who cares, it’s a sci-fi fantasy series about bones, it’s not that deep”
it is. it is that deep. engage with the text. PLEASE

thinking about how harrow writes to herself “look upon me as a harrowhark who was handed the first genuine choice of our lives; the only choice ever given where we had free will to say, no, and free will to say, yes”. gideon thinks that harrow's refusal to eat her was refusal to be beholden to anyone else, and we know gideon is wrong. but isn’t it insane that while the choice wasn’t to achieve freedom (as gideon believes), the choice itself WAS freedom. to harrow, choosing gideon IS freedom. the first real freedom she’s ever known
Saw someone on Reddit asking what the requirements are for going to the library. Not to get a card and check stuff out. Just to hang out there. I don't mean to make fun of the poster for not knowing. I blame capitalism and the reduction of third spaces for making the idea of being able to just exist in a free public space seem like a strange concept to people. Anyway. This inspired a meme.
she's so awful sexy and pathetic i hope she eats me next
blue gansey adam and ronan silently driving back to monmouth at 4:30 in the morning after adam snuck out behind their backs, woke the ley line, sacrificed his free will to the magical forest, and then killed their latin teacher in the span of like an hour.
