Several of the early Transportation stamps had been printed on the Cottrell presses, which were no longer in use. Over time, they needed to print more stamps of certain denominations. When possible, they reused the same master die. But some stamps with designs larger than .73 inches needed to be re-engraved. This Stagecoach stamp was among those to be re-engraved. The new stamp had several small differences from the original stamp.

Used in the late 19th century, the bread wagon delivered commercially baked bread to individual homes and grocery stores. Although commercial bakeries had been established as early as 1640, most baking was still done in the home until the early 1900s.

The stamps depict five fish common to US waters. The Atlantic cod and the bluefin tuna are caught primarily for commercial use. The Muskellunge, largemouth bass, and the catfish are all freshwater species popular in sport fishing.

A forerunner of today’s buses, the omnibus was used in U.S. cities during the late 1800s for public mass transportation. These large, horse-drawn wagons were developed in Paris and were used throughout France as early as the 1830s.

These stamps pay tribute to the fine artistry of wooden statuettes, which were commonly used for advertising in the 19th century.

While this stamp pictures Bernard Revel and was initially scheduled to be issued on his 101st birthday, it also was issued to honor Yeshiva University in New York. The school’s roots stretched back to 1886, when the first school of Talmudic studies in the US was founded. 1986 marked the 100th anniversary of the event. In 1985, the USPS established new guidelines forbidding stamps that honored school anniversaries, and also stated that stamps honoring people should be issued for significant anniversaries. In effect, the USPS was breaking two of their own rules with this stamp.

John Harvard (1607-1638) was an English clergyman who settled in the American colonies, in Charlestown, Massachusetts, in 1637. Upon his death in 1638, Harvard left half of his estate and personal library to the newly founded college which later became Harvard University.
