We are Masters! I couldn't imagine this journey without these ladies rooting for me (and us)! I love you all so much!! This is not the end, it's just the beginning ❤️❤️❤️
Ready to do this thing!! #tminus2days 🌼@slptobe 🐝
What a sweet, but sad, and glorious day! UK Class of 2018 we are finished with clinical rotations and ready to graduate!
Defense
Not a week ago I defended my Master’s Thesis on an assessment for pediatric feeding disorders, and I have to say that hard work pays off! I was blessed with amazing compliments from the supportive faculty who came out to cheer me on and hear what I’ve been doing over the past year. It is hard to believe that it’s over already, and yet, it is just the beginning! I hope to see you all at ASHA 2018 in Boston, where I will have two posters and a presentation (if all goes well). I have also been encouraged to publish my paper, and because I truly believe in this research, I want to continue it in the next chapter of my journey following my graduation on May 4th.
Throughout the research and writing process, I faced my fair share of challenges. But in spite of delays, roadblocks, and hurdles, I would make the choice to do research again in a heartbeat. Here are “5 Reasons Why I Defended My Research” and why you should too!
1. Because I am making a difference through research. There are families who have been hoping that someone will find a way to help their loved ones. You can be that someone! No matter how niche your population seems, they are worth every bit of effort. Everyone deserves to live their best and fullest life.
2. Because research needs to be done, and not many people want to do it. Research takes time, and when you are already busy serving your patients and doing the work you love, it does not leave much time (if any) to try and tackle some of the field’s greatest challenges. It may seem daunting, but you just need a big helping of patience, a side of determination, a sprinkling of writing skills, and great colleagues to edit your work! Once you begin to lead, you will be surprised how many others will be drawn to help you advance your research.
3. Because with research our profession can continue to use, and improve upon EBP. One of the most important aspects of our profession is evidence based practice. This means that our therapy techniques should be thoroughly supported by research. This alone should tell you that someone needs to be doing research.
4. Because with research we can learn to serve patients even better than before! The best researchers draw from experts, existing literature, the patients and families, and the clinicians who are currently working in the field. As with anything, the best research incorporates multiple perspectives. With perspective comes understanding, and with understanding comes quality care.
5. Because learning is a life-long process. Never. Stop. Learning. When you research, your are looking for answers. What is an answer now, may not be enough later. Even if you never decide to conduct formal research, choose your strategies carefully. Make sure you know what service you are providing and keep in mind what we want to be able to offer. Keep asking questions, and keep looking for new perspectives. You will be a better clinician for it!
I hope this post motivates you to go on to change the world!

This is the preparation phase for my Master’s Thesis defense! I spent my spring break in a coffee shop working on this. I love(!) my Google Slides presentation (all 61 slides) ❤️ It was fun to add images and art from my sisters for an extra pop of color 🌈
If you knew her, one of Nona's most characteristic qualities was her voice; particularly her accent. She sounded as if she had never left Milano, and yet she lived here from the time she left Italy at 18 until she left us for heaven this past Fall. I was able to be with her before she left, but the last time I heard her voice was on my birthday a week before she died...I called her back to talk with her, but I'm so glad she had to leave a message first. As a future SLP, the voice means so much to me, but hers even more so. I framed the soundwaves of Nona's last message and I still need my sister to add the writing, but I couldn't wait to show you all. I will forever hear her voice❤️
One of my smart little SLPY1 friends 💞Shaimaa💞 did her CAT topic presentation on infant cue-based feeding, and I just had to read about it!!
These pretty cards arrived just in time for KSHA!
First day of my 3rd and final rotation in a school tomorrow calls for cupcakes! Bring on the kids!😬😰 #snowdaynoway 🐧❄️ #spring2018
My sister Emmy did the artwork for this research recruitment flyer and I love it!
I spent this Fall 2017 semester at the UK Voice and Swallow Clinic with Dr. Suiter. Had the opportunity to learn from her in radiology doing MBSs as well as in the ALS clinic. In addition I spent a great deal of time with her team and doctors in the ENT clinic and HNC clinic at the Markey Cancer Center. Will take so much with me into my future career 🐿️🍃 #slayedworktoday #whitecoatfashion #slplife
Thesis writing 📝💼#crunchtime (at Coffee Times Coffee House)
A Master’s Thesis
And just like that, I have decided to write a Thesis during this last year of my SLP program. It is optional for our program, and it takes a lot of extra time and research, but I can’t imagine wasting such a great opportunity! I want to disclose that this decision was voluntary, and I couldn’t be more excited! I have even convinced my friend to do a thesis as well. She and I are the only ones brave enough to try it. That being said, I hope I can get all of my ducks in a row for the study, and don’t end up regretting it! I have heard that it is ton of work. Dr. Jane Kleinert has graciously consented to being my Thesis Chair and I am thrilled to be guided by such an amazing professor in a study that we are both so passionate about. My study is entitled: “A Pilot investigation of an Instrument for the Assessment of Feeding Disorders in Children with Severe Disabilities” More to come later!
Last day at Cardinal Hill Rehab! It was so nice to be together with these ladies this summer! I'm going to miss it🌻 #SLPs #repost
OK, so I think cupcakes are my new thing 🐻🐻🐻 #thebearsaresocute
