Brian Tyree Henry, who plays Phastos in Marvel's latest superhero film, said what it meant to play a hero he wished he had growing up.

something I started to realize a few months ago is that “becoming a better person” isn’t born from hating yourself and anxiously striving to do better. it isn’t particularly glamorous or dramatic. it’s just work you do while also taking care of yourself, things like:
-being mindful enough to recognize why you act certain ways -being honest about your baggage -resisting the compulsion to “be perfect" -recognizing the importance of your own wants and needs -educating yourself on issues that pose a stumbling block for you -googling things like “how to talk to people” (you can google how to do anything, even very simple things, and I recommend it) -identifying what behaviors you’d like to change in the future -being prepared to wait rather than seeking immediate reassurance/forgiveness for your own comfort
etc.
anyway thnx for letting me ruminate about this on ur dash, hope you’re having a good day.
a friendly reminder that microaggressions against asians can also look like this:
pretending to gag at asian food
pretending to be weirded out by asian customs and cultures
excusing cultural appropriation (often through ignoring the stories of asians who have been mocked for wearing their ethnic dress while praising a white person for doing so)
not trying to learn how to pronounce an asian person's ethnic name correctly, or asking, "can i call you by something else?"
adopting an asian name for the ~aesthetic~
using the words "oriental" and "exotic" to describe asian people, particular asian women
ignoring the experiences and stories of south, southeast, *edit* west asians, and central asians
making sweeping assumptions about asian countries (including their political, historical and cultural landscape)
treating the entire asian community as a monolith and ignoring the fact that the experiences of asian nationals are remarkably different from the asian diaspora/migrant community
co-opting asian aesthetics into creative media without acknowledging their history

In a move that has sparked outcry from archaeologists, historians and locals, the Peruvian government has approved a multi-billion international airport near the famed site of Machu Picchu, Peru’s single most important tourist destination. Bulldozers have begun to clear millions of tons of earth for the project, which will be located in Chinchero, a picturesque Inca town.
Building the airport in this location will destroy an ancient landscape, one shaped by the Incan people with terraces and routes.
Critics also suggest that planes flying low over the nearby village of Ollantaytambo and its archaeological park filled with ruins and a massive Inca fortress with large stone terraces, would cause incalculable damage to fragile Inca ruins there and destroy the peace and beauty of the area.
The new airport will make access to the site much easier, and thus encourage greater numbers than ever before to visit.
But Machu Picchu is already overwhelmed by almost double the limit of tourists as recommended by UNESCO. [see also India’s Taj Mahal - an incredible site simply reeling under a relentless, ineffectively managed tourist, both domestic and international, onslaught]
It’s the constant battle between protecting the past and profiteering from it.

Opinions are divided in the agrarian town of Chinchero, where the airport is slated to open in 2025
