I know there's a literacy crisis or whatever but that doesn't give you the right to go after people with intellectual disabilities and people with brain fog and learning disabilities. Sometimes we need help understanding something, we might ask "dumb/obvious" questions. It doesn't mean we aren't trying to pay attention or use critical thinking. Responding to someone's question on the internet with snobby wisecracks about how the person should learn to read or go back to 1st grade is rude at best and ableist at worst. Just ignore the question if you don't want to answer. Don't flatter yourself saying how progressive you are if you turn around and make fun of your friend for asking a question after a movie.
My partner let's me pause and ask questions during shows and movies bc he loves me and wants me to enjoy what we're watching too instead of sitting there confused cause my brain couldn't catch up. Or I lost attention for a few seconds and missed something important.
Pro tip: don’t call people with social anxiety/selective mutism/autism/nvld assholes or other names just because they can’t respond to waiters.
I don’t think you guys actually know what these conditions are. It’s not “using mental illness as an excuse”, many people with social anxiety and selective mutism are literally UNABLE to talk back. It’s not a choice. Many people with nvld and autism don’t do “normal social rules” BECAUSE THATS LITERALLY WHAT DEFINES THOSE DISORDERS
Mentally ill and neurodivergent people aren’t being rude. We’re not intentionally ignoring you.
And if you’re gonna pull the “if it’s so hard why are you out in public” bullshit, then don’t. We’re allowed to be in public. We’re allowed to challenge ourselves. And if we can’t do it? It’s not the end of the world.
Telling someone with social anxiety or selective mutism they shouldn’t be in public is quite literally the worst thing you can do. Every therapist I’ve ever had recommended the OPPOSITE. To go out MORE. That’s quite literally how people overcome it.
You guys are all “mental health matters” until it’s not mild anxiety or depression. Stop judging people who struggle in social situations. All it does is make it worse.
I just wanted to remind fellow people with learning disabilities that
you’re not stupid
you’re not lazy
you don’t have to compare your best to others’
Your brain is made in a certain way and it’s not lacking. It’s just different.
Love u all
Having NVLD is a special kind of Hell because:
1) Even many “professionals” such as psychologists, disability advocates and therapists have never heard of it, let alone “regular” people
2) Unlike ADHD, there is no medication that helps
3) You try to tell people (even other ND ppl) your diagnosis and they’re like “Oh, that’s just ADHD/autism/asperger’s etc!” and refuse to listen. (Lots of similarities but there are different diagnoses for a reason.)
There’s a lack of concise, simple NLD resources out there, so I slapped this together. Hope it’s useful!
You know what?
I am annoying sometimes.
And that’s okay. It’s not the death sentence I was led to believe. People will love me even if I can’t read their signals sometimes. Not understanding is forgivable. I don’t have to hold myself back so I don’t annoy anyone ever.
The people who love me know I get excited. And I am still loved.
It’s weird when you realize the person you once told everything to now has no idea what’s going on in your life
This is one dance party 106-year-old Virginia McLaurin will never forget. To celebrate Black History Month, watch her fulfill her dream of visiting the White House and meeting President Obama.
i’m seeing a lot of people reblogging suicide hotlines and this is just a reminder that this is a suicide help line that works like a text-based instant messenger for people who may need to talk to someone but have trouble/are uncomfortable making phone calls
Never don’t reblog this. There are so many people who have such bad anxiety about phone calls. This can save so many lives
this user has non-verbal learning disability
Reminder to Abled people
The “perks” disabled people receive are not perks to the disabled. They only seem like perks if you have full bodily function. They aren’t benefits at all, they are the minimum required effort to help disabled people and they barely cut it.
Special seating is to fit a wheel chair, our butts and legs are in the same amount of space as you. We’re also cramped and uncomfortable and in pain, don’t be telling us how you have it worse. Most of those seats aren’t even in good spots in the theater.
Special parking is so we can even access the store. The walk from the middle of the lot for you is the same as the walk/wheel from the front of the lot for us. Many of us can barely make it inside from the handicapped parking.
Boarding planes first is because it takes extra time to do everything, including get in and out of chairs. They do not want US to block YOU. This is for YOUR benefit.
This also applies to the special lines at roller coasters- They do not want US to block YOU, the majority, from having a good time. Odds are a disabled person can only ride a few rides before having to go home (as well as many rides bar people with health conditions), few to no disabled people are using this line. It is a SAFETY precaution as well, because a disabled person cannot handle the strain of waiting in line in the heat as long as an abled person can. In fact, most abled people barely tolerate it. Why would you expect a disabled person to not pass out and need emergency services and halt the line if abled people do it, too?
Using the Elevator is not a privilege. How the hell are we supposed to get wheel chairs, damaged body parts, and our generous helping of pain up the stairs? If you think this is a benefit, pinch yourself immediately because you are dreaming. And yes, elevators often make disabled people with sensitive constitutions (most of us) feel ill. It’s not even pleasant.
Being Granted extra time on tests is because many of our brains freeze up when placed in a stressful situation. It also often takes longer for us to remember or process a question or answer. If you have testing anxiety, you are eligible too! Do not think it is limited to disabled people and it is a benefit. It’s so we don’t fail every test. It’s so we can KEEP UP with you.
“Getting” to take their dogs everywhere, is the most misconceived of them all. The dog is specially trained to preform a task so we do not DIE suddenly in public. Sure, the dogs are loyal friends, but I am not exaggerating when I say it is to prevent DEATH. Please understand the dog is for personal safety. Like a rescue inhaler or an alarm. Do not complain that you cannot have a dog in public and do not bother our dogs. You are downplaying our illness. It is both rude and cruel. Are you at risk of dying suddenly that could be easily preventable with an assistant? No? Then leave us and our service animals alone because it is none of your business.
Please think about WHY disabled people need this rather than decry the whole system that barely supports us. I am sure you mean well, but if you think that these things are “perks” or “benefits”, then you are part of the problem.
A large population of disabled people don’t even get access to all of these things because of the extremely harmful “faker for benefits” mindset that has been widely adapted. It is killing us. Literally. Please be considerate of the needs of all human beings, not just those like you.
Also not to mention that this mindset also harms a lot of non-able bodied people because “my condition is probably not that bad” and then refuse to seek access in the fear of being called out as fake.
Can confirm. I did this for decades and still do, sometimes, out of habit.
This is a hot topic in the neuropsychiatric community.. But actual NVLD is *not* on the autism spectrum. It is biologically related to autism in its cause, but presents in an almost opposite way(empathy, with verbal/mechanical skills, conceptual/concrete thinking etc.) with very few symptoms in common. There was a massive misunderstanding of NVLD in the past few years which led to common misdiagnosis as a set of comorbid symptoms with autism. This is a major issue.
I’m sharing this comment so everyone can see it.
I just wanted to say that I love your blog. I have nvld and have never met anyone with the same disability. I feel selfish for thinking that No One can relate to me and I've always had anxiety about people and different situations.
I don’t think you need to feel selfish for thinking that way. Sometimes when I’m in the middle of an extremely challenging/frustrating social situation I get so focused on my own problem(s) that I also forget that there are other people out there with similar issues.
If you ever need to talk about anything my ask box is always open
One day I hope people get this.
For all my brave bean children out there fighting their mental illness this holiday season,
It’s okay to hide away even if company is over
It’s okay to sit in bed all day and forget there’s something being celebrated
It’s okay to cry
It’s okay to avoid conversation
It’s okay to not immediately reply to anyone wishing you a happy holiday
Your panic attacks and depressive episodes and violent urges and suicidal thoughts are involuntary and your health should always be prioritized over convenience.
I love you, you’re doing great. You’re not rude or annoying or inconsiderate. Anyone who tells you you’re rude for taking care of yourself is an asshole. Please stay safe ♡
