Heated Rivalry (TV) detailed timeline

So I'm maybe just a liiiiiiittle obsessive, and I wanted to work out the timeline of the show, and figured I'd share it with you all. I can't quite figure out how to format this for tumblr, so I'm going to just c&p images of the tables and then dump all of it in unformatted text I guess under a read more? Please let me know if you can think of a better way for me to do this (without retyping it all!) and please let me know if you see any errors to be corrected.

ETA: I'm sorry, I added some info to ep 6 after rewatching and somehow deleted the table for ep 5? But it's back now!

I don't really think enough about how the realisation of Ilya's happiest life completely severs him from his home...... because like yes for him the concept of Russia is fraught - it's his father, his brother, his mother, his friends, the joy of childhood, the misery of growing up, a sense of belonging, a feeling of being at war with the dominant culture - but the finality of it is quite simple. Never again.

I mean like what he feels for Russia isn't hatred, it's another iteration of the complicated loyalty he has to both his parents, a queasy feeling that you can't pry what's hurt you from what you love (what you love always hurts you). But unlike his parents, Russia hasn't died! it still exists, you can go there, it's just that he can't! Imagine waking up in the middle of the night with the memory of a street you will never walk again. The knowledge that you will never again feel the relief of a place where everyone speaks your language, understands your baseline personality. Certain dishes, scents, views, seasons, all inaccessible. No negotiating that. He'll never be able to untangle his feelings from the inside, it will have to be done at a distance, and the pain of that is buried at the back of every thought. Ilya will never get to be a beloved Canadian figure in any straightforward way, and he'll also never take his rightful place as a Russian icon.......

HOWEVER I don't think there's any question of whether the trade-off was worth it. He would make the same choice again tomorrow. And it'll get a little easier as the years go on, but the loss is something he'll grapple with for the rest of his life

i have literally so many nasty hollanov thoughts some of them more grounded in reality than others but i want so bad to dig my teeth into a version of this where it wasnt love at first sight when it was a power struggle where the predator didn't realize how easy the prey would give in and the prey didn't even realize the predator was hunting him there and not where he expected. yay

still thinking about the way ilya teases shane is like. you are a dork (boring). you are not even really who i'm supposed to have a crush on, even my not-completely-gay side is supposed to find you tedious, like have you met svetlana? have you met sasha? i like danger i am a tigershirtwearingtotheclub bad boy (the tiger says im cool dont worry about it) and a sex god and you can't even break a rule about where to smoke a cigarette you are so squeaky clean its hard to even look right at you, and I think I JUST THINK !!!!! that ilya is actually irritated by shane's uncoolness at first (HEAR ME OUT) like ilya is irked by it like shanes good boy ness ruffles ILYAS feathers because it flies in the face of what ilya knows to be true which is that good guys are suckers good guys get taken advantage of your goodness cant save you and if it can then maybe your world is too different from mine because thats not the way the real world works like shane is nothing like what ilya thought he'd fall for and i don't think it was love at first sight i think ilya was being sincere in wanting to roll his eyes and feeling annoyed and legitimately teasing shane because he didn't -AT FIRST- respect him, or at least he wanted to knock him down a peg, and then shane was like, ok so if you knock me down a peg what if I try really hard to earn your respect and THAT is when ilya really noticed shane for the first time because that's what teasing was MADE for like someone who earnestly tries hard and cares about quality is so ripe for teasing and bullying and the thing is ilya is walking a VERY thin line between teasing from a place of his fragile ego and his trauma-tinged-desire and not pushing shane too far but still pushing SOMETHING on shane because shane likes to be pushed (which is insane its insane that ilya found his freaking soulmate of a likes-to-be-pushed-around boy in someone who ilya finds dorky and boring but then the boring becomes so erotic because look at his boy THATS HIS BOY his boring canadian freckled boy he hit the freaking LOTTERY) like every bully-that-secretly-wants-to-be-loved's dream and I think its worth exploring it as that as ilya being a bully sometimes as real meanness spilling out in places that make it messy as shane experiencing bullying but feeling something complicated from it like attention but the wrong kind but the wrong is wrapped up in something good too like theres something sweet and theres something sinister and sometimes its hard to tell which is which

What do you feel are the key components of JJs character to you? I feel like we see so little of him in the show and yet in fic I find he doesn’t read quite right. How do you see his friendship with Shane and in general?

NHL(MLH) players are NOT renegotiating their contracts before they expire. and they are especially not renegotiating their contracts in a single season to change cap space to allow a player to join that they as players want on their team. c'mon y'all.

1. what?????? that is a legal nightmare. 2. their contracts (bodies/play) are OWNED by mega-billion dollar companies that have their own priorities that will ALWAYS supercede what players want unless these players have an in with the board of governors, team owners, etc. (highly highly unlikely and would be singular and limited)

3. the 2013 NHLPA CBA (collective bargaining agreement) explicitly states:

11.10 No Renegotiation. In no event shall a Club and a Player negotiate a change in any terms of a Player's SPC for the then-current season or for any remaining season of an SPC (except as provided for in Section 11.8(b)). This provision shall not prohibit a Player and Club from negotiating an extension to an existing SPC in accordance with the terms of Section 50.5(f) hereof, or from negotiating a new or reformed SPC or Offer Sheet in the limited context and time-frame expressly set forth in Section 11.6(a)(vi) above.

11.8 is Individually Negotiated Limitations on Player Movement and deals with SPC no movement clauses/no trade clauses, buyouts, etc. it does Not Say That Players are free to renegotiate their terms for the sake of adding another player to the team.

while we are on the subject of manchildification of ilya i just have to tell someone this: it is my most deeply held belief that ilya is actually really Weird About Money. like he has to know exactly where its going and how much is going where and all the different terms and conditions. he has like one main russian financial advisor and one for a second opinion and he bullies them both over the phone regularly. the hcs where he doesnt know what or how much is in his bank account and never checks his bank statements can be fun but that is #notmyilya. even post family estrangement hes like well I Have To Know.

I don't really know specifically what book canon says about this but I'm choosing to ignore that and focus on the show instead lol

in the show, the relationship with money we see for ilya is around his family and the dynamic shift he had with them there, first with sending it to the point of losing his rookie bonus bc his brother just kept demanding it to keeping a strict hand with his brother and making sure he's doing a task in exchange for it to finally being smart enough to set a trust for his niece with safeguards to make sure its not taken by his brother.

i don't think something like that goes away even after estrangement...
