something i wish more people understood about stede is that, okay, yeah, it's coo-coo bananas that he thought mary would want to get on a boat with him. or that he thought ed was just his good platonic boybestfriend for as long as he did. or that he thought the world of piracy was going to be receptive to him without chewing him up and spitting him out.

but, like, look at the life he was living before that. miserable ass childhood aside, he spent a minimum of ten years in a marriage where voicing ANY of the things he truly wanted was completely unthinkable. to borrow @epersonae's phrasing, "If you have constantly been told that your emotions and needs are unsafe or wrong, it can feel easier to just not have them, to avoid things that bring them up."

and stede is a dreamer and a romantic and an optimist and none of those things make him stupid, but when you look at how all of that expresses itself, most especially in s1, you have to understand that stede's obliviousness is not because he's stupid, it's a safety feature

I am alive, kinda. My mom has passed away 2 months ago and it's been a roller coaster of emotions since then. Staying on top of things has been hard, especially art, but hopefully I can get back to repopulate all of my social media.
