Neji didn’t feel the need to question her, she seemed genuine to the eye of the beholder and that was enough–for now.“ I am indeed a native of Konoha,” he replied simply.“ The time was right for me to take a vacation so that’s why I am away.”

Nodding to her question.“ Yes, this Inn seemed comfortable enough and the price was reasonable.” The Hyuga couldn’t help but wonder what made her seem so interested in him but he couldn’t say he minded the attention.

“I will prepare to head to upstairs for tea and then I will rest. Would you be interested in having a cup?” Uncharacteristically, Neji offered the opportunity to accompany him to his room. Should she deny him he would simply go on as business as usual. He set out on this journey of isolation to find himself but he didn’t anticipate finding another who interested him.

Rin nodded. “A vacation?” she repeated. “That sounds nice. I’m always so busy working, I never have time to take a vacation. It must be nice over in Konoha?” she guessed. “And yes, this is a nice inn for a good price,” she agreed.

He already had a plan, and that was to rest soon, which meant she wouldn’t be able to get news from him if he was to leave soon. So of course she accepted the tea. With a smile, Rin nodded. “Yes, thank you,” she said. “I don’t usually have company,” she admitted, “but it’s welcome.”

After a near fatal injury, Neji decided to take some time for himself and collect his thoughts upon healing from his injuries. The Hyuga prodigy nearly suffered the same fate of that of his father before him by attempting to sacrifice himself so that Lady Hinata might live.

A part of him found himself wishing death had claimed him to spear himself from the life sentence of slavery. And though Hinata did not treat him as a slave or anything that resembled one he still had to live with the fact that he was at her mercy any given time.

Going to the Inn was where he decided to rest before he made it out of Konoha the following morning. What he did not suspect was to have company.“ I.. understand, but would you mind introducing yourself?” He asked politely.

He seemed nice, which was a relief. She had been half-expecting to be turned away, told that he didn’t want to be bothered. But he seemed to take her false excuse seriously, that a woman didn’t want to be alone in a crowded inn. Of course, he wanted her name, which was... fair. 

She thought about it for a moment, then answered truthfully. “My name is Rin,” she said, offering a tentative smile. It was a common enough name, anyway. “I’m traveling from a small village north of here.” That was true, and she almost added in a lie, that she was going to see family. But--she stopped. There was no need for that, yet, unless he questioned her more.

“What’s your name?” A pause, then she added, “You’re from Konoha? Are you staying in the inn here?”

       Strange of her to seek out company, when it was dangerous of her to do so, but--then again, not too strange given her nature. Back in the day, she had been the type of girl to enjoy having friends, seek out companionship and shared stories and laughter. Now she had none of that, and missed it, no matter how much she denied it to herself. So when she spotted a shinobi, far from home, judging from his Konoha headband and Hyuuga eyes, she grabbed her not-quite-full bottle of sake, two cups and headed over.

       “Mind if I sit here?” she said, looking to everyone as a normal village woman (she never wore a headband these days), as she sat down beside him, setting down the bottle and two cups. “This is a crowded inn, and it’s safer here if I’m with company.”

She wasn’t a jinchuuriki, never would be. The closest Sakura had ever come to understanding it was hearing Naruto recount portions of his life she’d been oblivious to, of the abandonment and loneliness he’d been foisted with despite not having that choice to become a jinchuuriki or not. Her heart had hurt for her close friend upon hearing it, and it tempered Sakura’s own inclination to rashness. She was too impulsive for her own good, and in moments such as these, it seemed to show. Especially when Sakura wasn’t beholden to the Leaf anymore. 

“I think that much must be obvious. I… know one of the Bijuu: Saiken, the Six-tails. They’re the mate of family of mine, who… is a slug, don’t worry,” Sakura simpered reluctantly, thinking of the bijuu whom she also had a summoning contract with. Though Sakura was too polite to ask Saiken about their affairs with their siblings, she imagined she could always ask Katsuyu if need be. 

Still, that did beg the question: what was a jinchuuriki doing out in the middle of nowhere? The brunette had no identifying marks like a hitai-ate, or recognizable clothing each hidden village had an element of commonality to. 

“Sorry about that, by the way. I tend to hit first and ask questions later, unfortunately.” 

      The pink-haired woman’s explanation, about how a member of her family had a mate, who was one of the Bijuu, but the family member was a slug--it honestly had a light laugh coming from Rin’s lips, and she hadn’t laughed in ages. Covering her mouth as she laughed, mostly in embarrassment for having shown such an openly human emotion, Rin overcame her amusement in a few moments and watched the woman with a small smile on her face, her mood lighter than it had been before. She wasn’t laughing at her--just... this was a pleasant human interaction for once.

      “Oh, I see,” she said, nodding once. “I guess if you’re strong enough, you can afford to do that. I try to be a little more measured. I’m strong, but if I get hurt too much...” She trailed off. Well, the woman probably could figure it out. It seemed like she knew a lot about how jinchuuriki worked.

     “I’m called Kame,” she said after a moment, “after my tailed beast.”

“Wait, so you’re a Jinchuuriki…” Though the answer seemed to be an obvious one, it still shocked her. With many of the Tailed Beasts released from their vessels after the war, they’d gone to disappear from the face of the world if not return to their host’s body in the first place. Saiken, the Six-Tails, had chosen the former and retired to Shikkotsurin where he’d became Katsuyu’s mate. But this woman… Maybe Naruto knew something. With the telepathic connection between the Bijuu, it wasn’t impossible to ascertain as much. But, Naruto wasn’t here and Sakura hadn’t spoken to him in years. 

That didn’t mean she wasn’t wary. A kunoichi, even stateless, was still dangerous. Especially when Sakura herself had amassed enemies from across the world that had unfulfilled vendettas. Personal, or not, she doubted this would slide by peacefully. 

“Hang on, do you even have control over your Bijuu? By the time the Tailed Beast Cloak is utilized, it’s usually the opposite and I know what I saw.” Or, what she saw the lingering remains of. Though her hard-lined stance didn’t falter entirely, the brunette reminded her slightly of Naruto’s own past. Was she jumping the gun too much here?

Many people were stateless after the war. Not everyone was close with not just one, but three Kages that gave them personal leeway to leave their harsh life behind. Arms unfolded, at least the woman seemed unharmed by whatever she’d been fending away. “It’s dangerous to be in that state for long, I’ll put it that way.”

She nodded once, chewing on her bottom lip as she watched the kunoichi in front of her express shock at her state of... jinchuuriki-ness. She supposed it was unusual, she knew there weren’t very many jinchuuriki around anymore, much less those that weren’t known, such as that Hokage Naruto in Konohagakure. Rin was an unknown, a jinchuuriki that no one knew about. She supposed that would be shocking, especially to someone who knew a thing or two about the Tailed Beasts.

The woman’s next questions surprised her, though. Rin couldn’t tell if they were couched in concern, or whether she was reading too much into them. Perhaps it was just that the pink-haired kunoichi was worried for her own safety. With a quick shake of her head, Rin resolved to make herself believe it was the latter. Surely it wasn’t any misplaced concern for a stranger.

Still chewing on her lip, she finally released it to answer, “I have control. Mostly.” True, using Isobu’s chakra tended to make her more violent, angry, and the like, and she couldn’t hold that state for long, but it wasn’t... terrible. 

“Besides,” she said, offering a small smile. “You don’t have to worry. I’ll be long gone the next time I have to use Isobu’s chakra. You’re in no danger there.” // @shikkotsunin​

    “ I thought they were just rumors, but…”

  Kasumi jumped down from the tree she had stationed herself in at the scent of something powerful and dark, an entity that made her blood run cold. There was no mistaking the identity of the power that lurked underneath the woman’s pale skin. Honestly, Kasumi couldn’t believe she’d be able to sense such a demon walking about, but here this girl was to prove her otherwise.

   “…you really are alive. I’m surprised. The files had classified you as deceased and yet here you are in your own flesh and bones. You’ve the will of an ox, that’s for sure.”

      Lifting her eyes up as the Kirigakure kunoichi jumped down from the tree, Rin readied herself for an attack. She wasn’t sure--she was never sure--if people were friend or foe, and the way this woman addressed her, she still couldn’t be sure. To her surprise, the kunoichi seemed to know who she was, which meant this one had to either be really good or perhaps just had access to a lot of classified information on the Tailed Beasts. Either way, that wasn’t the best news for Rin.

      With an uncertain smile, Rin scratched the back of her neck, looking at the other nervously. “The will of an ox? Yeah, I guess you could say that,” she said. It really hadn’t been her, it had been all Madara-sama’s doing.

     A pause. “You’ve encountered jinchuuriki before?” // @xfthemist​@xfthemist​

At twenty-five years old, the girl she’d been and the woman she was steadily becoming was becoming a closed gap. In one of her monthly visits to the Land of Fire, attending to the Konoha Children’s Mental Health Clinic was undergoing restructuring as they were now accepting adult and teenage patients, having underestimated the toll the war and life had general had on those who were supposed to have made peace. 

Eyes snapping open, with Slug Sage Mode could she sense a sudden spike in chakra, belonging to something not entirely human. The more Sakura concentrated, the more she could surmise that it was a Tailed-Beast’s chakra, bracing when she wondered if it wasn’t someone whom had gotten their hands on a Tailed Beast Drug, something she thought she and Sasuke had circumvented and eliminated from the black market.

With abnormal speed was she able to practically manifest from thin air, seeing the chakra belonging to a brunette she hadn’t seen before. With no discernible forehead protector, Sakura’s mind went on the offensive. “…I hope you’re not hiding any Tailed Beast Drugs on you. Because if that’s what I sensed, this won’t end very peacefully.”

The way the kunoichi suddenly appeared in front of her, Rin could tell she was powerful. That meant she was a threat. Her eyes narrowed as she watched her carefully, waiting for her next move, until of course the pink-haired women spoke, asking her about Tailed Beast Drugs.

Surprise flickered across her face, if only for a brief instant. She could sense Isobu from that far away? Because no one had been that near to her, at least not that Rin had been aware of. Of course, there were other variables, so maybe Rin was wrong (for instance, she was not aware of whether Sakura had been present when she had been using Isobu’s chakra), but still... whatever it was, she was surprised that the other woman had so astutely identified the chakra Rin had used as tailed beast chakra. Had she dealt with such before? If so, Rin had to be careful...

Her eyes narrowed. How to answer, though? If she told the truth, she might be taken in if this pink-haired woman was too powerful. Then again, the woman already promised a fight if she said she was using the drugs. And she doubted she could claim there was no tailed beast anything, either. So...

She crossed her arms over her chest. “No,” she said, a little bitter. “It’s the real thing. And I was just protecting myself, so there’s no need to threaten me.”

Jiraiya knew her. It was Rin, a student of Minato. She was a medic and quite talented, as far as he remembered. He nodded, frowning slightly.

“Yes, I have time. What exactly would you like to know?”

      Rin was surprised. He seemed ready to give her information, and willing. She wondered why. Still, better not to ask for reasons why if she could get the information she wanted. “I heard they want to capture the tailed beasts,” she said. “Can you tell me more about that? I’m a little worried given, well, what I am.”

Allowing parole to hover around them was merely an act of politeness, to lessen the fear of the people here that the viper may turn rogue at any given moment. But a shinobi of their caliber, a Sannin who had triumphed more than half the Great Wars to have cursed the lands, is hardly deterred by a few Jounin or ANBU. In other words, regardless of these provisions, if the serpent decided it was time to bite the hand that fed them once more, they would and could do so with great ease. Although they are being mannerly, and allowing the village to place them under this watch, they are also growing tired.  Constant eyes, constant incompetence. This incompetence would be shown again, when they watch a man being summoned. A man who was no man at all. And just as Danzo’s ROOT operative had been unable to hide from the serpent, they too can tell that this well mastered henge is not this persons true face. They can not yet tell who this person really is, but spotting falsity is the once hunted serpents all time talent. A smile rises to their lips, giving her an all too knowing look when she speaks to her ‘comrade’. Not missing a step as she plays the role of someone else.  Orochimaru is supposed to be an allied convict, while still on the Hokage’s tight leash, when they spot a problem for the Hidden Leaf they are to assist - or at least report it. But they spot their gap with Rin. 

A simple and fluid movement, and Hachiro has been knocked unconscious. Where they can resume their attention to Rin - their newest scapegoat, and their first opportunity at a little bit of un-policed fun. “Bold of you to enter Konoha under that mask my dear, with so many sensors about. But while you may have fooled a remarkable amount of people, you haven’t fooled me. Why not take that disguise off?” they say, slender arms folding over their chest as they lean on the wall, the unconscious parole officer hidden for the meanwhile in between the buildings. “You’ve nothing to fear from me. As of now, I’m going to let you run along without breathing a word to the surrounding Jounin,” they say, for that benefited them too. They got to be without parole, because they could so easily blame her, the veiled rogue, later on as the cause for their temporary freedom. Playing dumb and saying they were dismissed - that she had knocked the other man unconscious when they were not present. Of course, she would be long gone and unable to be tracked or traced, and they would have had plenty time to get some breathing room.

Orochimaru knew. That much was obvious considering the knowing look they were giving her, the growing smile playing at their lips. She could only hope what villanous tendencies they had were still in there, and that they wouldn’t reveal her. She didn’t want to fight here, it would attract others, and she couldn’t have that. But they stay quiet, just smiling and watching.

Still, it’s a problem, being stuck as Orochimaru’s guard, because she was sure if they didn’t reveal it, they would do something. She just had no idea that something was knocking out Hachiro in one quick movement. Jumping somewhat at the swiftness with which the sadly incompetent jounin was taken down, and at the unexpectedness of in, Rin could only blink a few times at them as they spoke. But slowly, a smile came to her face, as they leaned confidently against the wall. She may have found a kindred spirit.

Oh, whatever. It didn’t matter if one person knew she was alive, if he did know who she was. What did she care? She put her hands together, and in a puff of smoke, she was back to brown haired, female, purple-painted Rin.

“Thanks,” she said, inclining her head towards them. She hesitated, then added, “What are you going to do now?” Rin threw a glance around her. “This is the first time I’ve been able to wander freely around here in....” A sigh there. “Ages, really. But things have changed and I don’t know my way around as well anymore.” She frowned, then added quickly, “I’m not asking to join you, but--” She was totally asking to join them. // @dokuhebi​

Eyes narrowed, she approached the toad sage carefully, not sure if he’d know who she was, but she’d removed the purple makeup from her face, hoping it would make her less recognizable if he did know Kakashi’s old teammate. “Hey--Jiraiya, right?” she said. “Do you have time to--talk? It’s about the Akatsuki.” // @frogprinceus​

The clicking of a giant arachnid was beginning to be one of Rin’s least favorite sounds. “Fuck!” She cursed angrily as she was thrown backwards by one of its legs. She had danced between them to drop a paperbomb on its underbelly, and a moment later she set off the explosion... only to have absolutely no results. “Damnit,” she said again. This was going to take...

Deep breaths... She closed her eyes, focused... and drew on Isobu’s power, letting the tailed beast’s chakra run through her, her eyes turning red. Quicker now, she lunged at the spider at breakneck speed, using that speed to plunge a kunai through its eye into its brain. She stabbed it, again and again, until the clicking stopped.

When she finally disconnected and jumped away from the dead spider, she realized someone was watching her. Eyes returning to normal, she blinked, wiping the blood from her mouth. “Hey,” she said. Pink hair, green eyes. Not familiar. But... from Konoha. Damn. // @shikkotsunin​

Every one and a while, Rin missed home. She tried not to think about it too much; she tried to tell herself that there was no going back, because she didn’t belong there. And besides, it wasn’t like she had any fondness left for the village. It was just... sometimes she still missed the people inside the village, despite their faults. She couldn’t help it. She was flawed too.

So in her travels, she was passing through a town, stopping to eat some sushi when she spotted Uchiha Sasuke. She knew his likeness because there’d been pictures of him everywhere at least some point in the past few years, when everyone and their mother had wanted him back in Konoha or dead. As far as she knew now, she thought he was aligned with the village again? So maybe he had some news. 

She didn’t think he’d recognize her, she had been pronounced dead long ago. So she sat down beside him. “Hey,” she said. “Sorry to interrupt you, but you’re Uchiha Sasuke, right?” Before he could think ill of her too much, she added, “I promise I’m not here for a fight or to bug you.” // @suck-my-tomato​

She shouldn’t be here. Here, in Konoha, it was more likely she’d be recognized as herself than anywhere else, regardless of the fact that she was transformed into some male shinobi she’d passed on the street a moment ago and then knocked out precipitously and left in the forest. But she traveled at dusk, keeping to the shadows as she made her way back from the grave site of her parents. It had been her mother’s birthday today. Despite her departure from loyalty to Konoha, she... couldn’t resist. She still loved them. If she were honest with herself, despite her anger, she still loved a lot of the people here. She still loved walking these streets despite her bitterness.

But she didn’t belong here anymore. And she needed to leave. So she hurried away, fingertips yellow with pollen from picking flowers she had placed on her parents’ grave. Though the flowers had mostly closed for the night, she hoped it was still enough.

She was almost to the village gates when someone called from behind her. Someone’s name. Reluctantly, Rin turned, seeing herself being waved down. Or, seeing the person she was transformed to being waved down. And, reluctantly, she headed over, chakra signature very much suppressed.

“Hey, you missed your watch tonight,” one of them said, gesturing to the person in the middle of them, who... was that Orochimaru? Rin’s eyes widened slightly before she quickly masked her expression. She wasn’t entirely caught up on current events.

“Sorry, I... got distracted,” she said. “I fell asleep. Late night last night.”

“Well, he’s your watch now. Yours and Hachiro’s. Good luck, and see you later.” A vague wave from the other man and he departed, leaving Rin alone with Orochimaru and apparently Hachiro. 

Rin looked at the two of them, exasperated. Now, what? She looked at Hachiro. “How long do we watch them til’, again?” she asked. Apparently all night, and why didn’t she/he remember? “I just--tired, remember?” She sighed, and glanced over at the Sannin, wondering who wanted to slip away more.

Rin assumed one of the many things people in hidden villages probably liked to say was that one of the benefits of having a villages was the easy availability of jobs for shinobi. After all, people just lined up asking for reliable ninja to complete tasks for them, didn’t they? She supposed that was right. In the beginning, Rin had found a difficult time getting people to trust her to do work for them as a missing nin, as a kunoichi without a village, without even a legacy or any sort of infamy. But now, she did have some sort of clout behind her name to back up her work and get her jobs. Things were easier. And now, she didn’t go back to those days where she envied shinobi who had hidden villages--and she didn’t think back to the days when she had been part of Konoha (that was a bold-faced lie).

Today’s assignment? There was a Konohagakure ninja assigned to protect a nobleman coming into town. Apparently the was making some sort of trade deal and it would mean some significant revenue coming into Konoha. Rin’s job? Kidnap the nobleman.

She had done her research before taking the job, of course. The nobleman was as corrupt as they came. He was responsible for many deaths behind closed doors, and worse. So, yeah, Rin didn’t feel bad doing this.

What she did feel, however, was somewhat of a knot in her stomach when she saw who was protecting the nobleman.

“Why did it have to be him?” she muttered to herself. Not the worst if could be, but still. Troublesome. A quick transformation into some blonde woman she had seen a few days ago, dressed the same as she had before and she charged the party, Might Gai and all.
