I Have Been To The Mountaintop
I was inspired by his words one night and cut together this clip using old archive footage from the prelinger library - those words are as poignant today as they were back when first spoke it - if not more!
If you consider the state of the world at the moment - it becomes increasingly obvious that we are living in some interesting days. I'm not suggesting that its the 'end-of-the-world', but the days certainly seem gloomy.
A lot of people are going through some extremely challenging situations and for the first time in a long time my heart is being moved by a lot of what I see - the plight of some and the brutality of others.
I've spent the last 6 weeks observing the increasing instability in the middle east - partly because my family still lives there and because I've never seen such inhumane brutality.
I saw some really horrific things - things I can't un-see. I've felt like I wanted to do something - something to help the people in Syria and Iraq - I didn't want to just change my Facebook or Instagram profile picture to the arabic letter 'N' (for solidarity's sake) and then the next day, forget about all those horrific images I've seen - retreating back to my modern comforts. But I also didn't want to go to Iraq or Syria and leave my wife and son to go be a 'hero' - cause that seems just as easy too.
I started listening to a lot of people - a lot of different perspectives on what can be done to combat ISIS (as one of the issues) - what can be done to combat violence. And the strategy that seemed the most powerful was articulated like this 'ISIS is winning the battle because of their use of propaganda films on platforms such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. The only way that this battle can be won is by spreading the counter-narrative - and most of the media has been silent on those - those stories of hope and restoration.
I am in no way even attempting to assume that I know anything about the political/social realities at play in the world at the moment, but I know that violence just breeds more violence. The people who changed the world, were the ones who laid down their arms - chose to forgive - to restore - to love. People like Jesus, Mandela, Ghandi, Martin Luther King.
Just before Martin Luther King was assassinated he preached the sermon 'I've been to the Mountaintop'. Its a profund account of hope and intimacy - where he considers the importance and relevance of being born into the turmoil and unrest of the twentieth century. His outlook provides unique context for pain and suffering as he says 'only when it is dark enough can you see the stars'
He goes on to say; 'Men for years now have been talking about war and peace. But now no longer can they just talk about it. It is no longer a choice between violence and nonviolence in this world; it's nonviolence or nonexistence. That is where we are today.'
He modeled a way of non-violence - and it cost him his life.
SPEAK | Final Frames
SPEAK | Collection 1
Speak we're listening.
The Music Bed recently did a story on our family.
Super impressed by director Christian Schultz' ability to take my ramblings and make some sort of sense out of it.

The Quiet Silence Have we forgotten the intimate, eternal conversation Between Creator and Creation
By His breath the infinite and infinitesimal, all became by His Word, all held together
SPEAK WE'RE LISTENING | *NATURE References

The idea is to contrast the reality of the noisy/chaotic world we live in with the silent sanctuary of
the presence of God that we actually do live in but that we are distracted from experiencing because
of the assault on our senses in the present world.

1 Kings 19:11-13
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the
Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.
After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper
When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him “What are you doing here Elijah?”
SPEAK WE'RE LISTENING | *NOISE References

We wanted to create a space where a character experiences sensory overload.
The idea is to create an abstract modern interpretation of what it looks like to have an assault on your senses. This will be done via graphical light projection in a room filled with smoke - giving the light and room a volumetric dimension.
The idea is to focus more on the character experiencing the movement of light as opposed to drawing too much attention to the graphics itself.
We’ll be focussing on the movement of light across the character’s body - his eyes and ears and mouth.
The idea is too illustrate what our modern distraction are - our phones, the voices on twitter, instagram and the rest of the internet - all shouting for our attention.

*all this content was included in the initial pitch
But we are drawn
drawn by a Whisper So that we might HEAR and re-tune the senses as HE waits waits waits for our response:
Speak - I'm listening Speak - we're listening
SPEAK, WE’RE LISTENING – is a declaration that we are indeed, listening.
Like Samuel, the LORD has come many times, spoken many times and (hopefully) had our response many times, but this is an eternal conversation that involves not only personal relationship, but also the wellbeing and salvation of others. In the midst of a world saturated with voices and noise, the Voice we long for is His.
