Top Ten Ways for a Hidden Injury to be Revealed

(In no particular order)

Whumpee collapsing in front of Caretaker(s) (ah the classics)

Whumpee hissing/wincing/crying out/etc. when someone or something bumps against their injury

Bloodstain(s) soaking through clothing

Caretaker(s) finding evidence that Whumpee's been injured (the scene where the injury occurred, video recording, bloody clothing, etc.)

Whumper who witnessed/caused the injury 'mentioning' it in front of Caretaker(s)

Whumpee's shirt/etc. accidentally riding up and revealing bandages/blood/bruises/etc. (Alt: the injury-concealing clothing being torn off/etc.)

Whumpee moving in a way that aggravates their injury and being unable to hide their reaction

Whumpee just plain 'fessing up to it

Whumpee claiming "it's not that bad" and it can wait, only for Caretaker to find that yes it is that bad when they finally check it

Caretaker walking in on Whumpee taking care of the injury themselves

Consider also: The person who tended to Whumpee's wounds casually mentioning it in conversation to Whumpee's friend/teammate/lover/whatever, assuming (incorrectly) that they were already aware of what happened. "I'm sorry, I thought you knew. They didn't tell you?" And Whumpee's person wondering why Whumpee didn't tell them--lack of trust? Embarrassment? Whatever the reason, it stings.

no because what do you mean this is sidney crosby + alex ovechkin’s 100th game against each other and it might be the last time ever. what do you mean dylan strome purposely got himself kicked out of the faceoff so ovi can face off against sid one last time. what do you mean after the longest pittsburgh-washington rivalry ever, the crowd gave ovi a long standing ovation for what might be his last game in pittsburgh. what do you mean ovi was interviewed about sid not playing yesterday, and he said it’s okay, he knows he’s going to play today. what do you MEAN their rivalry has existed for decades, and has brought some of the most exciting hockey ever to the league, and this era could be ending THIS WEEK.

As a native german speaker I sometimes need to remind myself, when writing in english, that I cant just keep going with a sentence and that, unlike german, where you can make a sentence go on for as long as you want if you're a true lover of Nebensätze, english sentences are usually shorter and aren't supposed to go on for multiple lines or god forbid a whole paragraph.

mmm. i do love it when a minor injury gets worse. a kitchen slip up that slowly gets infected. a slight bump but the bruise swells and swells. a fall that seems okay until words start slurring and the world starts spinning. whumpee who already complained once about being clumsy, got the sympathy and a kiss for the little boo-boo, feeling sure they're overreacting now. it's not that bad. and if it is, well... they already asked for help once. they can handle this one by themselves. right?

For my fellow hidden injury enthusiasts: Shout out to that trope where a character is already introduced as very strong and competent, and later is revealed to have had a hidden injury/illness holding them back all along. Cue "My God, how strong are you, really?"

And it's always fun when "My God, how strong are you, really?" turns into "My God, what did they do to you?"
