The Aspects of Satan/Lucifer
Iāve talked about this before, but Iāve never made a full post about it. And since itās important, itās a bit overdue.
The one we know as the Devil has two main aspects that represent His very being and presence in our Universe. These two aspects divide His forms and make it easier to understand His dual-nature as both Adversary and Liberator.
These aspects are of Satan and of Lucifer.
Satan
Satan is representative of human life through the lense of animalistic existence. He is feared and hated by those who donāt understand Him. Yet, He is the embodiment of mankindās most human qualities, and thusly, should be celebrated.
Anton LaVey wasnāt wrong in his 9 Satanic Statements. Satan does represent vital existence, vengeance over forgiveness, and indulgence. Lord Satan freely partakes in, what by many, is considered sin, proving to the world that the human nature to sin isnāt evil at all, but completely natural and blameless.
Satan encourages the willingness to dabble in the strange and exciting for the sake of oneās gratification. For without the sweet taste of indulgence and forces of life, what true life are we living? Weāre not. Without indulging in life, weāre dead.
The Satanic Aspect also embodies war, more specifically offensive attacks. For how is one to ever challenge the status quo by simply accepting authority? Taking authority into question is an action most loved by Satan. He admires those who donāt accept defeat, and continuously fight for what they desire.
Darkness is often associated with Satan, and not without mistake. For He is the Lord of Shadows. He is the Master of Mysteries. Satan doesnāt require the light for His followers to write in His book. For He already knows what it reads. He knows all, yet of Him little is known by the masses.
Satan represents the application of both magick and force to change a situation in oneās life. He acts on whim and with great power to get things done. He is the down and dirty type of magick. The methods of the Left Hand Path. And Heās certainly not afraid of cursing.
Satan is synonymous with emotions and feelings. He isnāt fearful of one knowing their feelings or stance on a subject and certainly would never suggest the repression of oneās emotions. Part of the Dark Lordās teachings is to āknow thyselfā and with knowing oneās self, comes knowing and coming to terms with how one feels.
Satan is most definitely characterized through sexual and vital presences. He is extremely masculine and exudes an aura of dominance. The Devil teaches that one should never suppress oneās sexual desires, no matter how society weighs in. For sex is the basis of all life and vitality, and without enjoyment of oneās own body, how can one enjoy their spiritual side?
Satan shouldnāt be feared or rejected, as in a sense, one would be rejecting a part of themselves. There is a rebel within each of us. A part that revels in taboos and things society isnāt exactly comfortable with.
Hail Satan!
Lucifer
The aspect of Lucifer represents spiritual freedom and knowledge. He is the Light Bearer. The Bringer of Knowledge. He is the Great Teacher of all magickal and spiritual ideas. And for His knowingness and beautiful presence, He is deserving of the greatest respects.
The Morning Star, our glorious Lucifer, liberated humanity from the the Tyrant, giving all people the ability of choice and free will without punishment. He taught great secrets to Lilith and tempted Eve to partake in the Knowledge of Life. Without the Lord of Light, we would never know the great magickal secrets of the earth, and therefore be separated from our true potential.
Lucifer is representative of wisdom. He teaches that one should know of the world around oneās self, and do their best to always seek knowledge, both spiritual and otherwise. Without knowledge of the world, how does one perform successful magickal workings or great acts of science to affect change?
Lucifer embodies logical ability and intellect. He declares that one is able to make their own decisions through logic and reason in order to survive. He doesnāt encourage superstition without proper thought. For without the application of logic and reason, one is just following blindly what theyāre told to do, and that never ends well.
The Aspect of Lucifer is associated with Light. Light of Knowledge, Light of Day, For He is the Guiding Star. He is the intuitive spirit in each of us, as well as the Omiscient force that drives humanity toward discovery.
Lucifer teaches careful consideration before one commits any damning action. For if one decides to cast a curse, or get revenge, they should consider how to do it and plan accordingly. Is it worth the trouble? Logic and reason accompany this lesson, as well as many of The Morning Starās teachings.
Lucifer is an embodiment of philosophical awakening. One should question the way things are, in pursuit of correcting error along the way. If one should see another suffering, one should do oneās best to rectify it. For if it wasnāt for the great charity of our Lord Lucifer, humanity would be bumbling idiots.
Lucifer is the encompassment of the spiritual world. In order for one to know physical life, one must know the spiritual plane for the sake of balance. Without this, the scales are tipped, and consequence follows.
Lucifer, the glorious God of Light, should be most appreciated for His great teachings. Our Liberator defended our nature, and so in His Honor, one should strive to learn the ways of magick and science.
Ave Luciferi!
In conclusion,
One should understand the importance and need for both Aspects of the glorious Satan Lucifer. Without the dark how will we have the light? Without carnality, how does one appreciate the complex philosophies of life?
While Satan is the darkness and Lucifer is the light, this doesnāt mean one should favor one over the other. We all have these Aspects within us. The lustful and the charitable. The warrior and the thoughtful. If we didnāt, we wouldnāt be complete. And so, by honoring these parts of ourselves, we are closer to divinity and infernality. We are accepting our nature.
Satan Lucifer seeks to help those who understand themselves AND the world around them. For how is He supposed to help someone who wonāt help themselves by just looking around. To be analytical and know yourself, and the world, and your place within, is to have a wealth of knowledge, and therefore, power beyond belief.
Ave Satanas!
Ave Luciferi!

A Little Bit Of Wicca by Cassandra Eason
This book is (one of) the very first I read on the subject of Wicca. I think I picked it up at the time because the cover spoke to me. Itās pretty and purple and, well, I like purple.
Itās a really easy-to-read, 100 page book that you can easily get through in one sitting. And it basically covers everything you need to know when you very first start out. I really recommend it if youāre curious about ābecomingā a Wiccan and donāt know where to start!
Eason starts off with talking about the Wiccan altar and magickal tools. Altars come in many shapes and sizes and you canāt really go wrong with setting up your altar, but Cassandra Eason will guide you through it in her book!
Apart from having an altar, one of the most important things in spellcraft in Wicca is casting a magick circle. This is a form of border around you where you can safely do your spells and rituals in with the help of deities (if you wish). Knowing how to create it is pretty important!
Eason then takes you through creating your own spells and rituals, which might seem scary and complicated in the beginning, but once youāve got the hang of it, itās pretty damn wicked! (See what I did there?)
She also talks about the Moon Goddess and Horned God; the two main deities wiccans worship. Next to this is the Wheel Of The Year; which you undoubtedly have heard of here and there. This is basically the calendar wiccans go by; but more... elaborate than you think.
The penultimate chapter in the book talks about covens. Which is suuuuuuuper interesting and I havenāt found a lot of other books that mention covens, now I come to think of it.
Of course you donāt necessarily have to join or create a coven, you can be a solitary which and work solo! (Thatās what I do, at this moment. But I would love to find my own coven in the future.)
I would recommend this book for the beginning Wiccan, as more āevolvedā members of the community already know all of whatās being said in this book.
You have to start somewhere, and you might as well start with this book!
Side note; I bought all (?) my books on Witchcraft and Wicca in Waterstones. They have a little section on spirituality where you can find some pretty cool stuff!
This was a pretty short breakdown, because itās a pretty short book. But I hope you still learned something or your curiosity got sparked at least a little!
Entry #9 ā Witchy Library #1
Greetings. Todayās post is (hopefully) going to be the first in a series of posts called āWitchy Libraryā. In this series, I will be talking about books on witchcraft and Wicca. I do not get paid to do this (but if you want to pay me to read and review your books, hit me up...) Iām just doing this for fun and to be a help for others if theyāre struggling to find books on these subjects. And, because I love blogging, soooo. Letās dive right in!
Craft: How To Be A Modern Witch by Gabriela Herstik
Also known as āInner Witchā, ābrujaā and āczaryā in other parts of the world.
These 280 pages (in the U.K. edition at least) might just be all you need to get you started on your path to self discovery as a modern witch.
Gabriela starts off with a brief introduction through her journey as a witch and continues with an explanation about what Witchcraft and the history thereof exactly is. Chapter one delves into the beliefs of witches, to give you an understanding of what this lifestyle can hold for you. Thereās a (mandatory?) section about the tarot a few chapters in; which you will find in most books on Witchcraft and Wicca. Itās an interesting aspect and Herstik explains it in a really basic and easy to understand way. Itās a great reference to keep next to your deck when youāre doing a reading.
Further on in her book, Gabriela writes about various types of magick that sheās familiar with and practices. Which is very interesting because she writes from experience and knows what sheās talking about. (You go, girl!)
Then thereās Moon Magick, a section that you will find in like, every book on Wicca and Witchcraft. Itās an essential. Herstik gives an introduction with a bit of history about the subject and then goes on to dissect the phases of the moon, the type of spells you can perform during them and she even gives us some of her own, personal spells and rituals to perform if we like!
This writer witch also addresses crystals and astrology; including the characteristics of a handful of crystals, how to care for your crystals, the characteristics of the zodiac signs and birth charts etc. This is again a recurring theme in this type of books.
The last part of the book talks about miscellaneous rituals, spells, correspondences and the how-toās.
In my personal opinion. I like this book. More so, I love this book. After reading this, I even decided to follow Gabriela Herstik on Twitter and Instagram to have a glimpse of her day to day life. She really is a writer whom will stick in the back of my mind and whom I get inspired by.
I wouldnāt say this is the first ever book you need to pick up on this subject, but itās one of many that is (in my eyes) a must. You need to have at least a little bit of understanding about the magickal world of Witchcraft prior to picking up this book.
Writing about this made me want to read it again. (Sorry, 2019 Goodreads challenge, but this book will be in there for the second year in a row.)
I hope this post helped at least a little if you were considering books on Witchcraft and Wicca and I hope you get to know yourself differently after reading this book. (I know I did.)

Entry #6 ā Pendulum Readings
Greetings and salutations. Time for something a little different today.
As you gathered from the title of this post: Pendulum reading.
A pendulum (/ĖpÉndjŹlÉm/) is in the witchy world, a divination device to seek guidance from the universe. Itās mostly made out of a necklace-looking chain with a crystal hung freely from the end of it. I have two, at the moment; my first one was a rose quartz one with the tip of it broken off, I guess thatās why it called to me. Broken things fascinate me. My second pendulum was a Jasper one (could be Black Obsidian, now I think about it) and I found that it has a completely different vibe to it.
I use my ābrokenā Rose Quartz one for personal readings and the āblackā one to do other peopleās readings.
How do you use a pendulum? Itās fairly simple and by far my favourite way of divination.
Let the pendulum hang in front of you, completely motionless (or as close to motionless you can muster if youāve got the shakes). I usually meditate for a few seconds before starting the reading, just to clear my head and make sure Iām completely undisturbed and focused.
I always begin my readings by clutching my pendulum in my hands and whispering to it to give me guidance. (But thatās just my way of initiating the reading)
Ask simple yes/no questions that you know the answer to to ācalibrateā your pendulum. Trust me, this is necessary. I did a pendulum reading once without calibrating it first and.. well, basically the universe told me I was pregnant. (Donāt ask.)
Example questions could be āIs my name____?ā āAm I ___ years old?ā etc. Simple things, ya dig? Your pendulum will swing one way for yes and another way for no.
Now, itās time to start asking your questions. Make sure you only ask questions you WANT to know the answer to; as some of the answers might not exactly be what you want to hear.
And thatās it, really. Simples! I end my readings by clutching the pendulum in my hands again and whispering my thanks upon it. (And again, thatās just my way of doing things)
Sometimes, I use my handmade scrying board; this is a board I made using just wood and paint, really. Itās to help me get more clear and to-the-point answers. But this is by no means a necessity for scrying.
So now you know what a pendulum is and what itās used for; allow me to demonstrate it to you.
(Disclaimer: my readings are 100% legit. All pendulum readings are between you, me and the Universe. I will never make your questions and answers public unless you want me to)
I categorised my readings into three different sections;
ONE-OFF READINGS (written reading)
You get to give me one (1) question for Ā£1. Keep it simple for this one. Whatās gnawing away at your brain? What is it you desperately need to know? Did you pass that Maths test? Is your crush going to text you back? Is this new hairstyle really your thing?
IN-DEPTH READINGS (written reading)
Alright, so these are a bit more sophisticated. Put the Universe to work. Let me ask the Universe five (5) questions for you for £5. These can be more serious. Will you get that loan? Is your fiancée going to leave you? Are you pregnant?
TELL ME EVERYTHING (video reading!)
Dedication! The Universe wonāt let you down. Watch me ask your questions using my pendulum and scrying board! Starting at Ā£10 for five (5) questions. Add Ā£1 per every extra question you want me to ask for you. Go wild with this one. Ask whatever you want. (You donāt necessarily have to keep it clean, but please think of my poor innocent brain..)
Phew, now youāve made up your mind about which reading you want; hereās how you go about requesting one.
1a) Send me a messageĀ with your name, age and question(s)
1b) Provide me with a wee bit of context for bigger, more serious questions
2) I will get back to you with a price
3) If you agree to said price, PayPalĀ me the amount
4) Sit back, relax and allow 1-2 days for me to get back to you (I donāt always have time to do readings straight away)
5)Ā And if you like, leave a comment on this post down below!
Thank you a million for your time, it is much appreciated!
All the money raised from this will go to clearing my debts!
Entry #8 ā Omens #1
*/omenĖÉŹmÉn/*
*noun*
*/plural noun: omens/*
1 an event regarded as a portent of good or evil.
2 prophetic significance.
This entry will be the first of a series of posts (if they prove to be a success) where I tell the story of other peopleās experiences with omens; whether good or bad. The reason Iām choosing to tell other peopleās stories is because I cannot remember having any experience with omens myself.
The subjects I have chosen for this series are people I know personally and whom have told me their stories willingly. Their identity will remain unknown for privacy reasons.
A Murder of Crows.
One bird outside your window is normal. But when more and more birds start to appear at the same window over the course of a few days; things do get a little bit freaky. Especially when those birds are crows.
A; my colleague, told me the story of how crows started to appear outside her kitchen window in enlarging numbers. This was shortly after she sought answers from a fortune teller. She pieced two and two together and started to pay closer attention to what she had been told by the lady with the tarot cards. The cards didnāt look good. The father of Aās children was mentioned. (I havenāt been told the details, and I didnāt ask for any, either.)
Naturally, she started to get worried. About a week or so later; her ex husband (and also the father of her children) suddenly passed away. And the crows also stopped coming.
In this case, which also coincides with spiritual belief; the crow is an omen of bad luck and death.
I felt so sorry for my colleague. I could tell when she told me the story that she was really freaked out and anxious. Iām sure I would be, too. Something tells me sheās got more experience with the spiritual; but our five minute locker room break before work wasnāt going to be enough for more stories.
I havenāt stopped thinking about A and her tale. Itās certainly taught me to be more attentive to the little things that might turn out to be much bigger things in the end...
Entry #7 ā WitchiOS
Whatās a modern witch without her technology?
Thereās an app for almost everything so letās dive right in to my 8 favourite ones. (Disclaimer: I do not get paid to review these apps.)
STONE
This is a great app for getting to know your crystals. The layout is really simple and easy to use.
When you open the app, you get to see a (quite elaborate) list of crystals shown in pictures. Tapping on a crystal will give you the name and properties of said stone. It will also tell you what sort of energy / magick the stone can be used with. Itās a stunning and nifty app but I do not think each and every crystal you can find on planet Earth is listed on it.
I do have a physical book on crystals since my real life witchy library seems to keep on growing; which is way less distracting than using an app, in my opinion. Itās just handy to have a guide in your pocket, ya know?
SPELLCASTER
At first I started using this app just for fun, but after some time, I started to realise itās practically a pocket horoscope, tarot deck and book of shadows; all in the same app!
When you open the app up, you have a selection of options.
Tarot readings, spell book, daily horoscope, settings and more.
Starting with the tarot section of the app; the lovely developer advises you to have clear intentions before picking and using a tarot spread.
Whilst you donāt have a wide variety of spreads to choose from; it is a fun and easy way to get a glimpse of what the future holds for you.
The spell book is a compilation of the creatorās personal spells free for you to use and the daily horoscope bit kind of speaks for itself, doesnāt it? I gotta leave something to your imagination!
NIGHT SKY
Ever wondered where the constellations are when you canāt sleep at night? This app will sort you out. Night Sky is an AR app that shows you the constellations, planets and space stations in real time and also notifies you on meteor showers and what the conditions of the sky are when you want to have a little spy. Using the app is fun and simple. Just point your phone around to find what the universe has to offer you.
THE MOON
Okay, I use this app almost on the daily. It shows you everything you need to know about the moon. (Duh) Like where it is in the sky, what sign itās travelling through and what phase itās in. I love it. You can upgrade to the full version, but I mainly use the free one for preparing moon rituals.
ASTRAL COACH
I use this app to read my daily horoscope; which is almost always spot on. This app also shows you the status of the moon and offers you a daily motto. Itās simple but useful. You can buy the full version if you want more features; but Iām happy with using just the basics.
THIRD EAR AND HEADSPACE
Iām sure most of you are familiar (or have at least heard of) Headspace. Third Ear is very similar. Mindfulness is really important and I personally wished I used these apps more often. This is something I will need to work on in the new year.
Whilst Headspace is all about breathing exercises; Third Ear also gives you the option to meditate and chant ā for us witches. You could say that Third Ear is the Headspace of the witchy community,
GOLDEN THREAD
Okay, this might be the best tarot app ever. It just blows me away. I donāt even know where to start because Iām so excited. (And again, I donāt get paid to review this)
Personal log: this is where you record your journey. Personally, I will try my best to read my daily card every morning and record my process on the app. (Yet another thing I need to add to my to-do list in 2019)
You can draw a daily card, which gives you a detailed description of what everything means. Which is amazing for witches like me whom are fairly new to tarot and find it hard to get the hang of all the different terms.
And do you know what the most incredible thing about this app is (in my humble, free opinion); it literally TEACHES you how to read your own physical deck of cards!
The app gives you the option of doing a digital reading; which is super easy for when youāre on the move and donāt have your physical deck with you.
It also gives you the option to read your physical tarot deck and guide you through it all so you donāt get lost in translation!
I for one will be using this a LOT in future.
TIME PASSAGES
I mainly use this app to consult my birth chart. But apart from this feature, you also get to see which sign the sun and moon are in at the moment of consulting the app. You can also figure out if the moon is void of course and when Mercury is going into retrograde. (Which is always good to know...)
And thatās it regarding witchy apps I currently use to help me along in my craft. I hope this brief review can help you decide whether or not these apps would be something for you, too!

Entry #5 ā 666
When you Google āWiccaā or āWitchcraftā; you will notice that āpeople also search forā Satanism. Itās a common belief that witches worship Satan. Maybe not so much now within covens of modern Wiccan witches; but in the early years of witchcraft; Christians thought Satan gave witches their magic. So thereās that.
I, for one, do not worship Satan, per say. Do I believe in him/it? Yes. Do I participate in ritual orgies where blood gets smeared on my body whilst we chant anti-Christian incantations? No.
Iāve had people tell me āif you believe in the Devil, then you must also belief in God.ā ā Well.. not necessarily. I donāt belief in one God; I belief in the Universe. Satan isnāt the embodiment of all things evil. If anything Satan is more of a good guy than God is.
Hold your horses before you begin sending me hateful messages ā
Iāll tell you why. Satan is in all of us. He doesnāt necessarily have to be a deity to be worshipped. Heās an aspect of our own persona; our own individualism and freedom.
Man created God. Therefore, man doesnāt worship a God, but rather the one that created the idea of a God. A Satanist puts themselves at the centre of their own universe. We are our own God and thus can deliver both love and wrath to those whom deserve it.
Nowadays, when you hear the mention of Satanism, the first connection your brain makes would more than likely be to the Church of Satan and Anton LaVey. I have read the Satanic Bible and I can tell you from the bottom of my heart that no Satanist sacrifices children and virgins to the Devil. Whether any of these sacrifices actually ever happened, pre-LaVey, I canāt be sure of.
And to avoid any debates; āReactive Satanismā used to be a thing displayed mainly by problematic individuals or groups of people. These persons were rebelling against the Christian society they lived in and did in fact murder animals and humans. Though, personally, I donāt view them as real Satanists; but merely as criminals whom needed something else to take the blame for their vile actions.
Satanism is more a lifestyle rather than a religion. You canāt be converted into a Satanist; you realise you have been one all along.
Do Satanists practise magic? Hell yes. (Donāt you just love the puns?)
āMagic is the change in situations or events in accordance with oneās will, which would, using normally accepted methods, be unchangeable.ā ā LaVey
Greater Magic focuses on emotional energy like destruction, compassion and sex. This type of magic is mainly used for sexual gratification, personal success, material gain, or if you want to take it to the next level; curse your enemies. Basically, be selfish. As long as what you wish for is realistic.
Meanwhile, Lesser Magic is all about manipulation of circumstances using psychology. And by psychology I mean your own body. Seduction using your good looks, the perfume you wear, the clothes you choose to pull out of your wardrobe; you name it. Use anything your body has to offer to bewitch your object of desire. Sounds fun, doesnāt it? And you donāt even need to sacrifice any virgins!
One of the main things, if not THE main thing Satanism has taught me and I always keep in the back of my mind is ādo unto others as they do unto you.ā I used to be over-apologetic and I used to care too much about what everyone thought of me. Always wanted to be a good person even when the world treated me like dirt. That was until I read the Satanic Bible and came upon this.. rule, as you must. Treat others the way they treat you, NOT the way you want to be treated. Trust me, it opened so many doors for me.
To conclude this post, I want to include the Eleven Satanic Rules down here. Just⦠to make you think.
1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.
2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
3. When in anotherās lair, show them respect or else do not go there.
4. If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat them cruelly and without mercy.
5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.
6. Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and they cry out to be relieved.
7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
8. Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.
9. Do not harm little children.
10. Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask them to stop. If they do not stop, destroy them
(NO CHILDREN, VIRGINS OR ANIMALS WERE SACRIFICED WHILST WRITING THIS POST)
Entry #4 ā Samhain
Halloween is mine and probably most witchesā favourite holiday. Nowadays itās all about having the scariest and goriest costume and terrifying children when they trick or treat at your door. But do you know the origins of this holiday and why we do what we do? Thereās much more to it than splashing some fake blood on your face and bobbing for apples. (Even though I love both these things)
Halloween, or Samhain is a Gaelic festival that announces the end of the harvest season. This is also when the darker half of the year starts. Samhain is one of the four cross-quarter days on theĀ Wheel of The Year.
It is a festival of the dead where the veil between this world and the Otherworld is paper thin; allowing us to communicate with spirits more profoundly than on any other day.
In the old days, Samhain was a time to bring the cattle in and slaughter the livestock in preparation for the oncoming winter. Since the boundaries between our world and the world of the dead was at its most shallow during this time; the souls of our ancestors could seek hospitality in their old homes. Offerings in the form of food were left outside for faeries; since appeasing them was believed to bring a successful winter.
The reason people went from door to door dressed up was to intimidate malevolent spirits of the dead and to disguise themselves from the evil whilst they collected their āofferingsā. (Though Iām sure it wasnāt sweets people gave out so generously in the old days)
When we think Halloween, we think pumpkins. Whilst these have little to nothing to do with Samhain, one could argue that they represent a humanās head. When pumpkins get carved into Jack-o-lanterns, the Celts associated it with a light shining from the soul.
Most other symbols associated with this holiday are linked to witchcraft (whether coincidence or not, Iām not sure); the cauldron to represent death and rebirth; the broom (or besom) to sweep away all the negative energy. This makes for the perfect excuse to throw a bunch of old hags in between the Halloween decorations.
Thereās a history behind everything. Even behind this Americanised, Christianised festival of the dead. I will be burning candles and remember the ones whom have passed over to the Otherworld. And probably watch a scary film or two.
Ā Have a spooky time.

Entry #3 ā Wheel of the Year
Witches, Wiccans, Pagans etc celebrate Sabbaths. These are festivals dedicated to the death and rebirth of the Sun (aka the seasons, to make it somewhat easier to follow)
The Wheel of The Year many Wiccan Witches like myself follow has eight festivals on it. These are the equinoxes, solstices and their cross-quarter days. Donāt worry, I will explain this in a moment.
Please keep in mind that the dates of some festivals can change slightly due to the changing of the seasons and leap years and whatnot. (Side note ā Iām in the Northern Hemisphere; my apologies to everyone in the Southern part of the world; your Wheel will look different)
Ā February 1; Imbolc
Imbolc is a cross-quarter day also known as Candlemas. This festival marks the beginnings of Spring. This is the season for new life, for rebirth. When I was little, my nan and granddad held sheep and I was always so excited for them to have lambs during this time of the year. Itās also time for new beginnings; may it be re-arranging your room or blitzing it from top to bottom.
Imbolc is also the holiday of Brigid; the Goddess of the Sun, Fire, healing and poetry.
Celebrating this festival is often done by baking, lighting candles, planting seeds and making Brigid dolls. Symbols associated with Imbolc are swans, the flame, serpents as they were associated with inspiration and creativity, sheep, snowflakesā¦
Ā March 21; Ostara
Also known as the Spring Equinox and the āofficialā beginning of the season of Spring. Everything is perfectly balanced. The days and nights are equally as long but yet the light is more prominent than the dark. Slowly, the days become warmer and brighter.
This festival celebrates the Goddess Ostara, also called Eostre. In time, Eostre evolved into Easter within the Christian church and was also the source for the name of Eostrogen (the more you know!)
The hare is by far the most notable symbol of the Spring Equinox. It is sacred to the Goddess Eostre and also a totem of Goddesses of the Moon. Natureās rebirth in Spring is associated with the dying and awakening of the moon. The hare is also a representative of this and with that also a symbol of immortality.
The hare eventually became the Easter Bunny in Christendom and gave eggs to children. Why the eggs, you may wonder? Let me share with you this secret. Eggs represent rebirth, fertility and is a symbol for the whole universe. The egg consists of a balance between light and dark; Sun God embraced by the White Goddess. And thatās what Ostara is all about; balance in nature.
But why the hare, why the egg, why?!
Well, thereās a story that goes as such;
Once upon a time; there was a grand, spectacular party in the animal kingdom. A very important guest arrived and all the animals, rich and poor, wanted to present this guest with gifts. The guest was the Goddess Ostara. With their utmost excitement, every animal gave the Goddess whatever riches they possessed. But the hare was but a poor animal with little to no possessions. He didnāt want to show up to the party empty-handed, but the only thing in his possession was an egg⦠Hare decided to decorate the egg by painting beautiful patterns in bright colours on it. Once at the party; the hare was anxious to give Ostara the egg. But upon receiving the gift; Ostara saw hareās true self. Giving away all he got made hare the Goddessā special animal.
Ā May 1; Beltane
Beltane is a fire festival and a cross-quarter day that celebrates life and symbolises the oncoming of Summer. Everything in nature is at its peak on this day. Flora, the Goddess of Spring and the Queen of May falls in love and marries the Young Oak King and hereby become the symbols of Sacred Marriage. This is why Beltane is such a popular time for Pagans and Wiccans to have their Handfastings.
If that sort of commitment is not for you; donāt fret. For a lot of Pagans, it wasnāt, either. They decided to go into fields or woods to make love instead and nine months later, Beltane babies were born.
Traditionally on Beltane, bonfires are lit to honour the Sun. The origin of the word lies in āBelā, whom is a Celtic God and āteineā, which means fire in Gaelic. During Beltane and through the bonfires; people support the sun and encourage its light to nurture the oncoming harvests.
The fire was also jumped over to bring fertility, cleanse and purify and also a means of couples to pledge themselves to one another.
Ā June 21; Litha
Aka the Summer Solstice or the āofficialā start of Summer. This is also the longest day and the shortest night of the year. The power of the light is at itās peak; but the descent into the dark is nearing yet again in this turning point of the Wheel of the Year.
Thereās not a whole lot for me to say about Litha, to be completely honest with you. In my opinion; this is all you need to know.
Ā August 1; Lammas
This cross-quarter day is also called Lughnassadh (donāt make me spell this without Google, please) and is the celebration of the first harvest of three in total; which Iāll talk about later on.
Lammas, from āloaf massā centralises the harvesting of the grain and making the first loaf of bread from said grain.
The ground meaning of Lammas is that the completion of the present harvest already carries the seed from which all future harvests will grow from. (Fun fact; a woman pregnant with a daughter is not only carrying said daughter; but also all the eggs her offspring will release. Making this woman both mother and grandmother.)
The grain harvest provides food for the winter and the seed of another rebirth as the Grain Mother is pregnant with the new seed of Lugh, the Sun King.
Lugh is cut down along with the grain he represents and with this he gives his life to feed his community and simultaneously plants new seeds in the Grain Mother. (Does this make sense? Iām not quite awake writing this)
Ā September 21; Mabon
This day marks the āofficialā beginning of Autumn (Fall, for you Americans) with the Autumn Equinox. This is yet another perfectly balanced milestone in the Wheel as day and night are equally as long once again. But in contrast to Ostara; this time, during Mabon, the darkness slowly takes over the light with the coming of Autumn and nature turning beautiful shades of brown and orange.
Mabon is the second harvest called the Fruit Harvest in our Wheel of the Year. Apart from that; it is also a time to reflect on the influences of Ostara and Imbolc as well as finishing up projects you might have been working on and cut ties with things you do not longer require in your life.
Ā October 31; Samhain
Itās finally Halloween; my favourite time of the year and every witchās favourite holiday. Samhain is also the final harvest; the one of berries and nuts and it also happens to be a fire festival. But most importantly of all; itās a memento mori. The Sun King wanders the Underworld until his reawakening during Yule.
The veil between the world of the dead and that of the living is at its thinnest; encouraging better communication with our ancestors whom have since long parted from us. Itās a time to honour the dead and celebrate the fact that we shall soon be reunited with them once more.
Ā December 21; Yule
Yule is also known as the Winter Solstice and has the longest night of the year. This is also the time of the year the sun appears to be standing still in the sky; pondering whether or not the light will eventually return or if all will descent into darkness forever. (Wow, that was deep)
But itās needless to say that the light returns with the reawakening of the Sun King and slowly the cycle of nature continues and the light starts to overpower the dark.
In conclusion
This concludes my revision about the Wheel of the Year. I didnāt cover every single aspect because this post has already gotten way longer than I anticipated. But the basics are there.
Let me know whether or not you like longer posts or prefer my slightly shorter ones. Iām not sure which type I prefer myselfā¦
Ā Until next time.
Entry #2 ā European Witch Trials
There is no doubt about the fact that you have heard about the Salem Witch Trials that took place in 1692. Numerous books have been written on the fascinating history of the Witches of Salem. But have you ever heard about the Witch Trials in Early Modern Europe? As Iām originally from one of the first countries were Witch Hunts took place; (which I only found out while doing my research) I found it appropriate to write about it.
From the very first recorded witch trial in 1428 to the last one recorded in 1793; roughly between 50.000 and 100.000 victims were made. During this period, the hunt for witches sparked up because of various factors. The Little Ice Age (a period of time where the temperatures would be below the average minimum) which resulted in crop failures. Inflation, disease, famine⦠Who else was there to shove the blame on but witches?
Another reason witch hunts were popular was the Religious Wars; namely the ones between Catholics and Protestants. Both parties believed that Satan wanted to come to power by employing witches and giving them magic to take out Christendom from the inside. (As you do)
Ā Now, while in some parts of Europe more men than women were tried for performing witchcraft; it would always remain majorly women whom were the scapegoat. Let me tell you why.
In many cultures women were (and still are) seen as the weaker sex. This (obviously) meant that Satan had a bigger influence over the female race. Whenever a man was accused of performing magic, it was mostly in connection to a female. Poor and marginalised women were mostly targeted.
But concepts such as abortion and contraception were thought to be the work of witches as well. According to the Witch-Bull of 1484 called the Summis desiderantes affectibus, issued by Pope Innocent VIII (ironic, no?); witches slew unborn babies and stopped women from being able to get pregnant due to their partners not succeeding in impregnating them. This was considered maleficarum (harm committed by magic)
Some folk were accused of being witches just because they kept cats. Cats were thought to be familiars gifted by Satan to act as spies. And of course, familiars were fed through a Witches Mark that said witch carried on their body. Even though presumably the āāmarksāā were no more than moles, birthmarks, natural discolouration of the skin etc. Witches Marks were identified by pricking the accused subject all over the body until an insensitive spot was found where no pain or blood stemmed from.
The Witch Trials were carried out in the belief that it was āāmorally appropriateāā, even though some of the executioners were known for being sadistic. Alas, they hid behind the belief that they were doing the public a favour.
Ā āMorally motivated action can lead to massive suffering.ā ā Scarre and Callow
Ā The Witch Craze died down eventually, though it wasnāt because the public stopped believing in witches and magic. They slowly came to the realisation that more, legitimate evidence needed to be obtained before accusing someone. Since many of the occurrences previously thought to be the cause of witchcraft, may simply be perfectly explainable natural causes.
Ā Hopefully, this short revision about witch trials in Europe sparked some interest and made you eager to learn more about this subject! I know Iāll be doing some more reading on itā¦
Entry #1 ā Witchcraft Vs Wicca
This entry focuses on the differences between Wicca and Witchcraft and how I combined the two; making me an Eclectic Wiccan Witch. (Just call me a witch for short; since EWW isnāt really an abbreviation I want to be known by)
Thereās various different Pagan religions and paths you can embark on in life; depending on where youāre from and where your ancestry lies. As far as Iām concerned, none of my relatives before me identified as witches and Iām not entirely sure how or why Iāve always been drawn to this way of life. Iāve always been the odd one out; and now Iāve come to appreciate that about me.
Ā I discovered who I am through research and trial and error. Iāll guide you through the differences between Wicca and Witchcraft before explaining what exactly an Eclectic Wiccan Witch is. I hope this brings some clarity to those of you whom are unsure of the craft and what it all means. I admit it can be confusing.
WITCHCRAFT
Witchcraft is a way of life. People who follow witchcraft can also practise Necromancy. Unlike most people would like to think; necromancy is not literally reanimating a corpse like Frankenstein did. Nope, it is communicating with spirits of the dead for divination purposes.
Apart from necromancy, one of the other practises is Demonology. This is the study of demons; whether human or non-human. Iām not a professional Demonologist, so I wonāt go too deep into this.
Witchcraft is much older than many of us think; dating back all the way to the time of folk magic. Since witchcraft is a way of life; there are no set rules you have to live by; there is no faith to believe in. You do you, basically.
WICCA
Wiccaās origins lie in England; where it was founded by Gerald Gardner in the 50ās. It is described to be a āpagan new religious movementā; so unlike Witchcraft, Wicca is a religion. There are many different paths a Wiccan can take; hence it can become hella complicated.
Most Wiccans live by a moral code, if you wish. Thought it is not followed by all Wiccans. āAn ye harm none, do what ye willā ā this is also called the āWiccan Redeā.
Wiccans worship deities; these mainly being the Moon Goddess and the Horned God.
They/We also celebrate holidays depicted on the Wheel of The Year called the Sabbats.
ECLECTIC WICCAN WITCH
This is where things get personal. Everyone is different; so naturally, everyoneās path will be different as well. For me, itās a mix-and-match. Being eclectic means you take aspects of various paths and weave them into one of your own creating. I identify mainly as a Witch but Iāve taken bits and pieces out of different types of Wicca, tossed them in my cauldron and brewed them into a potion that fits me and my way of life perfectly.
IN CONCLUSION
You do you, boo. Whatever feels right for you is the best for you. Donāt give in to anything thatās not going to work in your benefit. And most importantly; donāt do anything you donāt want to do.
Ā Stay magickal.
