Re-watching early X-Files, it strikes one that it's not actually unreasonable for Mulder to assume a lot of what Scully says to him is some sort of esoteric flirting thing, because who the fuck talks to people like that, while we as the audience can see that she just talks like that all the time, including to herself when she's alone.

All I'm saying is if a colleague consistently addressed me with an air of palpable clinical fascination, as though every moment we're talking they're contemplating cutting my skull open and rummaging around in my brain-meat to figure out what's wrong with me, I'd think they were coming on to me, too.

Not originally X-Files but it screamed Mulder and Scully to me

i wonder how much of her life Scully spent trying to fit herself into roles that felt too small for her. like from what we know of her pre-pilot (smoking cigarettes in secret, rewriting Einstein, choosing FBI academy over a career in medicine, sleeping with older instructors, gaining credentials that most people her age could never dream of etc.) indicates someone who is simultaneously excelling and rebelling, leaping between disciplines and expanding her interests at a rapid pace. she’s clearly worked hard to succeed within extremely competitive and male-dominated institutions but there are already signs than she’s testing the boundaries and isn’t satisfied with simply checking the right boxes to advance her career. ambitious as Scully seems from the outside, her curiosity and her integrity prove much stronger motivators for her than professional acclaim (this gets spelled out pretty definitively by Squeeze).

so i think Scully before the pilot was chronically understimulated and always on the edge of feeling truly trapped or bored. but her tendency to act out is tempered by an equal tendency to fold back inward and assume the role she believes is expected of her — she is Starbuck and she repeatedly assumes that role in many of her endeavors and relationships, treasuring it at first but eventually resenting it as well. so Scully wants more of something but what more is there? what except to keep going along the path she’s fought to make her own? she’s not doing what her father wants or what her teacher wants but she’s still unsatisfied. until she’s standing in a cramped basement arguing with a strange man about aliens and feels like she can breathe freely and think freely for the first time in a long while

been thinking about that scene in s1 where mulder is developing film in a darkroom. and when we see him aim a polaroid at scully. and then later we see him looking at his family photo album that he keeps in his desk at home. and how samantha's picture is always on his desk at work.

conclusion: fox mulder loves to take photos of scully and (eventually) william. the rise of the disposable camera was HUGE for that man. you know he was constantly at the drug store getting that stuff developed and putting the best ones in an album. and probably getting a little artsy with some 35mm when he had the chance, too.

i imagine it would be really important to him, especially since he only had so many photos of his parents and sister, and then his mother burned the rest... he would make sure his family had plenty of visual evidence of their time together to hold onto and look back upon, both for proof of the good times they worked so hard to build and just in case something ever took one of them away.
