Ok my blog is a ✨ mess ✨ but I really feel that's my brand like, in life + I'm extremely lazy and barely capable of keeping track of stuff that matters, so

Do people not understand why the scoobies thought Buffy was in hell??

It seems very clear to me they don’t think she was in hell because she deserved to be there. That’s like so nonsensical idk how people think that (and yet I see people say it).

They think she’s in hell for a couple reasons (at least from my perspective):

1) the portal Buffy jumped through was initially created to get Glory back to Hell. Yes, it was stated that it would break the barriers between all dimensions (not just hell) but it was primarily conceptualized as a portal to hell. Also,

2) your best friend jumps through a portal you KNOW goes to hell. You find her lifeless body. You’re sick with grief. The scoobies are obviously going to assume the worst from the situation, because the worst is quite plausible and very scary.

It just gets to a point with the scoobies hate. Like I think a lot of people forget that they were all, what, 19? 20? when this whole thing went down. They were barely adults but I think some people forget that because of the immense power the gang wields.

and also, and correct me if I'm misremembering, but i don't think the show had introduced heaven. even with Joyce's death, they weren't talking about how she was in a better place. Heaven was not a part of the show's mythology to that point so why on earth would even the audience think Buffy went to heaven?? again, correct me if i'm wrong but i don't think audiences in 2001 in the hiatus between s5 and s6 assumed Buffy would be in heaven as a giant group. and I know I didn't think "oh it's okay she was in heaven" when I watched Bargaining for the first time. modern audiences have the benefit of the binge and time not building that tension, but it was written, acted, and shot for there to be the tension of a 4 month break. it's understandable from both a watsonian and doyalist perspective.

i think that childhood best friends to enemies trope is the most tragic thing to ever exist bc like. we’ve both done unspeakable things to each other and there’s no getting back to what we were at the start of this but there’s a part of me that still knows you like no one else could ever possibly know you. the whole idea of trust and devotion turned to a mutual, burning hunger to destroy each other. I hate you this much because i loved you this much. drives me insane.

i love when characters don't get to die

this is about villains/antagonists/general horrible people who finally face up to what they've done. especially if they try to pull the good ole "Dramatically Does One Good Thing To Redeem Themselves And Dies," but despite their best efforts they DON'T die. like yes motherfucker there's no easy way out for you, there's only the slow, awkward and painful process of learning to live with yourself. of learning to live with the weight of your mistakes. you get a second chance regardless of if you think you deserve it. you get to try to make amends and do good. you get to live.

this is also about every self-sacrificial bastard of a protagonist who puts themselves in harm's way again and again and again to a wildly unhealthy and unnecessary degree. see, there's something so compelling to me in the unspoken suicidality of repeated heroic self-sacrifice, and the thing about implicitly suicidal characters is that i want them to live. and that can be used to make a death so much more tragic and impactful - noble sacrifices and last stands certainly can and have been done beautifully - but there's also something special to me in seeing such a character make it. because you'd die for the people you love, yes, but would you live for them?

I think one of the reasons people are so annoyed by Angel is that they take him and his cool, dark, brooding, mysterious guy act at face value. Essential to any understanding of Angel, is the fact that he is, at heart, a fucking loser.
