I just learned that a lot of vintage perfumes and fragrances were intentionally created to blend well with the ever-present smell of cigarettes, and in specific a lot of iconic ones that are super musky and floral and civet-heavy were intended to compliment the smell of fur coats or even "refresh" that new fur coat smell, which is one of the reasons (besides just shifting preferences and trends) that a lot of them smell really, really bad to modern noses.
I bet there's some stunning genius diva out there right now who meticulously coordinates her Victoria's Secret body mists with her vape flavors.
One time I was at a pub trivia night with some writer friends and we almost won but there was a tie. As a tiebreaker they asked us and the other team to write down as many moons of Jupiter as we could in two minutes.
None of us are very into astronomy so at first everyone was like oh we’re gonna lose but there were three of us at the table that night who were either former classics majors or otherwise super well read on Roman mythology and the three of us were like give us that paper right now and we just took turns writing down all of the lovers of Jupiter from mythology that we could.
So of course we won lol
You really never know what random niche knowledge you have will come in handy at trivia night. You really don’t.
People out here coming up with all these headcanons where Grace is Rocky and Adrien's third mate, or like an uncle to their kids, or, like, their pet?
But Rocky is almost 300 years old. Adrien is probably similar. He talks to Grace the same way one would a toddler because the Eridian language is so impossible as far as their cross-species limitations and he has to dumb it down. He bends his own mathematics and units of measurement to Grace's because he knows Grace can't keep up.
But Grace is also super smart and far more intelligent than any animal, so he's definitely not a pet. He teaches Rocky plenty of new things too, after all.
Grace is also only, like, 40 when they arrive at Erid. Rocky was already stranded at Tau Ceti when Grace was born. Rocky is older than the country Grace comes from. Rocky was already on the Petrova Line mission the day Grace came out the womb.
Rocky and Adrien don't marry Grace or whatever, or make him an uncle to their kids, or their pet.
Rocky and Adrien ADOPT Grace because he is baby. Baby human, so lost, fragile, talk like toddler. Genius toddler, but still, baby. Teach other kids for enrichment, yes, yes.
And yeah, Rocky is Grace's best friend, but he's also his protector once they get to Erid. He's the one that has to advocate for him, support him, speak on his behalf, figure out what's best for him, mediate. Rocky is 250 years older than Grace. Grace is baby that claims Rocky is his best friend. Of course Rocky is his best friend as well--he's the older, wiser guardian now tasked with protecting this squishy, leaky, blob pebble. It's the same way a child looks at their guardian and claims them as their best friend, except Grace will never age out of it. Grace means so much to Rocky--he's the poor baby alien genius he found with no family floating around in space.
People comment on Rocky being sassy by bossing Grace around or having attitude because he refuses to teach Grace Eridian swear words (this is implied to have happened when Rocky is admonishing Grace for leaving the taumoeba out at room temperature, refusing to translate one of the words he was using). But people rarely mention how Rocky scolds Grace for bad behavior, and even occasionally tempers his reactions when Grace is trying his patience.
But, going even further, Rocky will do the very parental thing and, when Grace screws up and is clearly feeling really bad about it, will comfort him by assuring him it wasn't that bad. Example, when Rocky is gravely injured saving Grace's life, Grace makes a HUGE mistake in trying to help that nearly kills Rocky. And when Rocky tells him this, he explains the situation quite gravely, but also, as soon as Grace shows extreme remorse and guilt, assures Grace that, actually, given how long Rocky had been sleeping when Grace made this mistake, it was probably fine, what Grace did. In fact, maybe it did even help a little.
This exchange was curious to me at first, because Grace--from our perspective--is an adult, and it seemed very odd to swing from "you nearly killed me" to "actually it was probably fine, don't feel bad, it might have even helped" within moments given that Grace should be able to handle both the consequences of his actions as well as what it could teach him about Eridian biology. Instead, Rocky goes on to placate him because it's clear Grace is devastated that he fucked up so badly. Maybe there is truth to what Rocky said and maybe what Grace did WAS ultimately helpful, BUT I always interpreted this as Rocky realizing that his poor alien child did his best to help him in a horrible, scary situation and unintentionally made it worse and now he's spiraling and upset and no, no, no, we can't have that, "it's okay, it's okay, it helped, you helped, don't be upset, everything is fine, I'll be fine, shh, shh, shh, I'm alive and I'll get better now, don't be sad."
So, if you take their ages into account, of COURSE Rocky is going to act like he's the one in charge, telling Grace what to do. Of COURSE Rocky's not going to teach Grace bad manners like swearing. No matter Rocky's ability to acknowledge that Grace is extremely mature, intelligent, and capable, no matter how often he does relate to Grace as an equal, and no matter how dependent Rocky is upon him for the mission--
Grace is still practically a child from Rocky's perspective. Maybe a teenager, and so Rocky can get away with ribbing on him and chastising him more harshly. But still, very, very young.
There are even points in the book where the way Rocky talks to Grace, he sounds like a parent or much older sibling. Some of this is likely attributed to their language barrier, but then, that's not the only way to interpret his tone.
Additionally, Grace's adoration, trust, and starry-eyed admiration for Rocky is also very "this person is much older than me and I trust them implicitly with my life because we're friends but also he's the adult in this situation. He's so capable and an engineering genius so of course I would let him do open heart surgery on me and trust without question that everything he creates and designs is flawless, because he is PARENT (hundreds of years older) and I am "CHILD" and the trust is unshakable." Even when Grace starts to doubt Rocky's engineering (which is basically unfathomable to him--again, VERY parent-coded and not exactly best friend coded, because most of us with best friends have no issues acknowledging that they're probably not the end-all be-all of answers and skills), it ends up that the mistake was actually Grace's and Rocky's flawless engineering remains intact.
Rocky and Adrien are Grace's new parents, is what I'm getting at here.
And when Rocky and Adrien have their first biological child, they refer to Grace as Older Sibling Grace.
Fight me.
EXTRA: And also, those AUs going around where Grace gets an Eridian body when his human body dies? Huge miss that not more people are making him a pebble/teenager. When he does die, he's still VERY YOUNG by eridian standards, and so the body he gets could reflect that. He could be one of Rocky and Adrien's children, as even if he'd lived to be 100 (which is unlikely given all he's been through and the gravity he has to deal with on Erid), he's still only the equivalent of 10 to 15 to 20 years old (20 might be pushing it). Granted, we don't know the actual rate at which Eridians age--maybe they age quickly and become adults by age 30, who knows, but still, huge miss. Say Grace lives to be 100 (he won't), by that time, Rocky will be around 350. Big parent/much old sibling energy there. And yeah, Grace is an adult by human standards, so you could ratio out their ages, but, like, that's no fun.
I got a comment telling me "that's not how sleeping pills work". Annoyed, I said yes, that is, because when I take sleeping pills, that's how they feel. The commenter immediately switched tones from ugh to OMG as they asked follow-ups and then said I should talk to my doctor. I wasn't going to, but eh, I had an appointment the next morning, so i figured I might as well.
Turns out I'm allergic to a key ingredient in over the counter sleeping pills and I've been nearly dying on a regular basis. So. This is a PSA to commenters: your nitpicks are never too nitpicky to be said. They might save someone.

Ahaha. Big "Turns out it was the carbon monoxide" reddit thread energy here.
My mom was once in a class with a guy who kept dozing off and annoying everyone with his snoring... until the classmate who was a nurse took one look at him and went "You're getting that sleep apnea checked out now before it kills you". You never know what you don't know!

Recently switched to Clip Studio Paint and I drew some Rocky’s for practice.
Ice beam is low-key a sauceless "standard" move for its type
Earthquake? That is THE ground move. The ground quakes beneath you.
Surf? A giant wave of water that your pokemon can ride. A thunderous tide. Invokes the ocean.
Thunderbolt? Arcing flashes of electricity zap you.
Flamethrower? Fire breath, fire throwing, an arc of propelled flame is classic.
Ice beam? It's a beam. Of ice. Could've been a gust of frigid wind, or a frost incursion, or being entombed in a glacial slab, but noooooo it's a beam. Of ice.
yes but it goes foowaaaa ting ting ting ting ting ting and i really like that part
Fuck you're right post cancelled
My spouse and I were talking last night and the jeans problem came up so I want to talk about it with tumblr here.
The jeans problem was the favorite lecture one of my philosophy professors in college gave about the history of jeans and how it ties into capitalism/mainstream culture absorbing and monetizing any counterculture it encounters. So prior to the 1950s jeans were mostly an item of work-wear that you wore on the job as a farmer or factory worker or miner because they were cheap, durable, and hard-wearing. If you were off the job you'd wear what we'd call now dress pants or slacks. This changes in the 1950s when youth culture start wearing jeans as regular clothing, again because they're cheap, durable, and hard-wearing. But then jeans get absorbed by the culture and we start getting designer jeans, acid-washed jeans, pre-ripped jeans, and now we got people shelling out hundreds of dollars for "povertycore" aesthetic. And now jeans aren't even cheap, durable, and hard-wearing.
This came up because my spouse was talking about thrifting and spooky things (two of her favorite things) and how there was this trend of buying a landscape painting from a thrift store which was probably going to end up in a garbage dump and painting a sheet ghost on it to make it art millennials would like. But now you can go to Michael's or Home Goods or wherever and just buy a landscape painting with a sheet ghost on it, mass-manufactured by a corporation. The counter-culture once again being monetized and absorbed by the culture. It's the jeans problem again.
grace: would you still love me—
rocky: yes we'd still love you if you were a worm
rocky: no we're not mad at you
rocky: yes we love you
grace: 🥹
adrian: he does not speak for both of us. i would not love you if you were a worm. the human body is weird enough.
You know, I always find it interesting when people make fics/art where Edward’s been promoted to some rank above major (which comes with the state alchemist certification). It’s interesting to think about sure, but Ed does literally nothing for the army. Mustang’s in Central putting in the effort and getting his name passed around the higher-ups and kissing ass while Ed does literally exactly none of that. He runs around the country with his brother and, begrudgingly, checks in from time to time. Not the sorta dude to be “highly considered” for promotion.
Though the one instance where he could reasonably get promoted would be in the event that 1) Mustang has some sort of opening in his sector and 2) Mustang feels like being a dick.
“Hey Fullmetal, long time no see.” “Yeah yeah Al and I are in a rush. We wanted to leave Central an hour ago so hurry up and spit it out what’d you call me here for?” “Oh don’t worry it’s good news. Wonderful news. You’re really making your way in the world. See Lieutenant Colonel Davis transferred recently to Southern Command–” “Oh no.” “–Which means there’s a spot for Lieutenant Colonel open here.” “No no no you didn’t.” “Longer hours, more responsibilities, sure. But better pay, and you’d get in good with some high-ranking people, assuming you know how to brown-nose.” “I will literally kick your ass, Mustang.” “For what? Brightening you future?” “No really I will kick your ass if you’re being real here–” “Is that a challenge, Lieuuuutenant Colonel Elric?” “I swear to God Mustang if you a c t u a l l y d i d…”
And as it turns out Mustang’s completely bluffing and gave the job to some hard-working major under his command, but he couldn’t pass up he chance to see Edward’s reaction to dealing with the idea of having genuine responsibility to the Amestrian military.
Mustang knows he actually has relatively little power over Ed, because Ed is too important to the homunculi. Mustang can’t fire Ed (not that he would) or suspend him or dock his pay or dole out any punishment really for insubordination. If he tried, Ed could just completely ignore him, and no one under Bradley’s rule would try to enforce it.
This frustrates Mustang for some time, at least until Mustang discovers he actually is in possession of a real threat against Ed: Promotion.
This confuses a lot of people, who overhear fights between Ed and Mustang that end with Mustang menacingly discussing the better healthcare benefits of Lieutenant Colonels. Or the nicer pay. Or the guaranteed apartment housing in Central.
Most soldiers start theorizing this is some kind of back-hand threat. Something like “You know Elric, you’re under consideration for Lt. Colonel and would get all these nice things. But if you’re going to be difficult, maybe we’ll give these to someone else? Think of what you’d be missing out on.”
This theory loses all of its credibility one afternoon when Mustang’s soldiers overhear a loud, heated argument between the two of them from inside Mustang’s office. It ends with the sound of Mustang slamming both his hands down on his desk, kicking his chair back, and shouting, “I SWEAR TO GOD FULLMETAL IF YOU DON’T SHUT UP I WILL PROMOTE YOU!”
Most Central soldiers just stop trying to understand alchemists at that point.
random eridian: now that there's an Alien on our planet, i have decided to make the fuck aliens club. where we tell the alien to Fuck off
random eridian: and now, for a few words from our newest member
rocky: ... so it seems i have misunderstood
Apparently when someone goes "which of these two heroes would win in a fight?" The correct response is not "well why are they fighting?"
Personally i think its a relevant question but powerscalers Do Not Agree
adrian: you’re a lying, cheating piece of shit! you’re not the eridian i married!
rocky: fine then! we’re getting a divorce! and i'm taking the pebbles!
grace, pushing the monopoly board away from them: … maybe we should stop playing
rocky: my love. how do you keep attracting so many suitors?
adrian: it's the confidence. just act like you own the place, dear
[later]
grace: ... you're in a ball.
rocky: so rocky no die in grace atmosphere. i come up! :D
