they'd seen every attraction possible in the gold saucer — each more exciting than the last. they'd watched the chocobo races, they'd played with boxing robots, they'd even seen their best friend sing her heart out and receive a standing ovation and a call for an encore. all that remained was the skywheel, and despite it being the most tame of the attractions, it was the one that scared her the most. it was kind of romantic, wasn't it? going up there with someone you liked? maybe she was overthinking it. maybe cloud felt the same way too. “ okay! last one. ” she puts her hands on her hips and looks at cloud, then motions to the wheel with her thumb. “ and we have tickets. i say we go on before they decide to shut it down again, hm? ” tifa grins, walking over to him. she should just grab his hand. he didn't pull away last time — he actually moved to lace their fingers together. feeling brave, she does the same thing as she did the last time they were here. her gloved hand curls around his, giving it a squeeze before heading towards the wheel again. “ i wonder if there will be fireworks. wouldn't it be cool to see them from that close? ”

                    tifa turning up at his door was one surprise he didn't know how to acknowledge, their feelings for each other a labyrinth that neither knew where the exit was. each time cloud was confronted by his past, he was conflicted or sent into disarray. never with her, the only clear shard amongst fragments of clouded pain. their evening in the gold saucer was evidence of that, proving that their affection for one another stood the test of time, amongst other obstacles.

                    cloud glances at the wheel behind her, adjusting his posture to convey as much composure as possible. ❛ right.  ❜ he replies, speechless rather than silent in this situation. any word could be the wrong one, yet it could also be the right. once her hand took his again, fingers instinctively mesh with hers as they rush towards the wheel. ❛ yeah, the view from up there must be worth it.  ❜ he adds, following to eventually take point & wait for the gate to open.

                    digits impatiently tap across his biceps, beating across the firm yet strained sinew. strength injected at the risk of consequence, poise not without poison. despite his reluctance, cloud followed through with the advice given to place his name upon the bounty board, offering his services despite the reasons for whatever means. he knew the state of the world, even if he stood arrogantly against its ongoings. his newfound party were burdened with deeper purposes than he was hoping, knowing it would take careful work & resolve to step back when his reward caresses his palm. ❛ what kept you?  ❜ he asked bluntly, body turning & arms dropping to watch as she appears from behind him. ❛ i'm not waiting around to get paid. let's get to work.  ❜

                    trembling digits find refuge in the worn handle on his back, the buster sword yet to be removed from it. fractured memories force themselves into pieces that don't fit, attempting to forcefully complete an image that cloud doesn't understand. voices scatter around his mind, enveloping his senses with heated disdain & poisonous promises. he didn't know what to believe anymore, each sense betraying him in a fleeting moment as he desperately clings onto reality. but his grip faltered. the stone cold walls surrounding him felt like a furnace, trapping him within a wall of fire as sweat boiled across every inch of his skin. yet none of it compared to the burning pain through his skull, one hand clutching it as if sheer acknowledgement would suffice. eyes forced into focus into the entity before him, the root of all his suffering albeit the source of his power, or so he was being told.

                    their words ringing louder than any whisper coating his ears, gritted teeth fighting back every urge to answer their question. the answer itself frightens cloud more than seeing sephiroth before him. cloud's normally stoic posture & strong will reduced to immense confusion & fear. ❛ you ... you're not real.  ❜ a protests, as if exclaiming there were no god above midgar, to the very existence of sephiroth before him. ❛ how ... ?  ❜

this is a one time gig. when it's done, we're done.

                    fanfare fills the space that is left from their battle, the weight of legacy & dreams cruising as cloud holds the buster sword with breathless resolve. their reluctant alliance has tested their wills, forcing them into cooperation where they would normally clash weapons. though, much time has passed since the first flames of rivalry flickered. neither were the same person since then. his sword hangs low to the ground in one hand now as cloud wipes his brow with the other. reno's words stiffen his expression with a subtle response. ❛ whatever.  ❜ a pause, metal cutting through the air as it clangs onto his back, shoulders adjusting their posture to accommodate for the weight. it never gets any lighter. ❛ fine by me.  ❜ a beat, cloud now turning to walk past the fiery haired turk. ❛ the sooner you're out of my way, the better.  ❜

                    dangerous territory were the memories of his life before SOLDIER, before the cracks formed & fragmented his life forever. yet it is the only destination for the boy who wanted to become a hero & the girl who waited for him. the creaks of seventh heaven fill the air, adding to the ambience of tifa's home & business. it helped alleviate the silence between them, not that were was much with tifa ensuring cloud didn't retreat into himself. truthfully, he didn't want to either.

                    the half empty glass rests firmly on the table with his hand fastening it, eyes wandering off as to not let himself become too obvious. their conversation had taken tangents tenfold, though now reaches its inevitable destination. she recited their conversation from their childhood, atop the water tower, where she made him take this promise originally. cloud's chest ached, his heart beating in tandem with the pain banging in his head. yet he perseveres, for this moment to become fulfilled & for her most of all. eyes flicker back towards her, nonchalance dominating his posture as he throws back the rest of his drink. ❛ i'm here now, aren't i?  ❜ a beat, swallowing down the burning sensation that followed. ❛ not that you'll need saving. you look stronger. but ...  ❜ cloud tapers off into silence, as if the promise were about to become renewed through his own lips. albeit, he lost himself in his own thoughts again. ❛ yeah. you got it.  ❜
