In the small town I grew up in, there is a One Man Cemetery. Located about a mile from a main highway, in the heart of the Osceola forest, lies John Daniel Williams’ grave. You must travel by foot to reach it. What was once a popular “haunted” hangout for teens in the county, it is now a highly protected historical site. For fear of vandalism, a chain link fence was constructed around the burial site, and forestry rangers routinely monitor the area. Williams’ family was one of the first to settle in the area, near the St. Mary’s River in the 1860′s, right after the Civil War.
Disclaimer: There are many legends and ghost stories surrounding this man and his family; I spent many a drunken night with friends in that forest and near Mr. Williams’ grave, and nothing remarkably spooky happened. We mainly scared ourselves into leaving.
