my modus operandi is reading/watching things that i know i'll like far too late and therefore missing the "heyday" of the corresponding fandoms so maybe since i wasn't there i have no say. but just based on the works that still remain the classic fandom centrifuging of wesper really fucked over the character interpretation of everyone involved huh
it feels weird because like. every character im about to talk about i Like. i like matthias. i like kuwei. i like jesper and i like wylan. i like them a lot. i think Leigh Bardugo writing jesper and wylan to be in a relationship is both good for the story and pretty awesome in terms of representation. but ohhhhh my god holy shit. i dont want to pin this all on Everyone Who Likes This Thing I Slightly Dislike. im going to try not to shit on people just enjoying something. but i Need to properly express what im seeing
i think it's odd that the immaturity jesper can show in the stories is immediately erased when people want to depict him in a caretaker position for wylan. he's charismatic and flirty in canon, but we've seen that when he's actually emotionally invested in something (as in : kaz) he can get kind of stupid with that. i think that's very real and human! i think it's odd that people erase this part of him when it comes to being the perfect, emotionally available boyfriend for wylan. (also this is kind of on bardugo actually i . don't like the little implication that jesper cannot be trusted with money and businesses at all by the end. doesn't anyone think the allowance thing is kinda weird. ok)
i also think that wylan's character can be straight up assasinated whenever he's depicted in dynamic with jesper. he is inexperienced compared to the Crows who have a Body Count, yes, i know this. but he gets his very own Body Count by the end. he is not a pacifist, he is not a waifish soft boy who can't do anything on his own and even more irritatingly the other characters do not exist to be witnesses to his suffering. i feel like his little flaws and the ways in which he actually shows strength and independence are erased when people want to project some sort of vision of a perfect victim onto him. i . know this is probably the meanest thing i have written here im Sorry
god....kuwei....i mean ive already stated that i hate how he's been reduced to the Witness of jesper and wylan's relationship. he's so much more than that, they're so much more than that, all the crows have relationships with each other that are all interesting and worthwhile It's Not Just This. depicting kuwei as perpetually in love with jesper and willing to be this sort of duplicitous snake who tries to break them up is insane to me. people refuse to engage with the idea that he is his own person with agency and that his life does not revolve around jesper, even during his time in captivity. that he is Effectively A Prisoner even when all the other Crows have free reign. that any of that might have been difficult, or worth digging into as a character. That he can connect with any of the other Crows on an emotional level (PLEASE. ANYTHING WITH NINA AND MATTHIAS. ESPECIALLY WITH HIS STATUS AS A GRISHA AND AS PART OF THE REASON FOR JURDA PAREM. GOD IT WAS SO IMPORTANT CAN ANYONE HEAR ME??)
matthias my mouse guy. god. his death was valuable, it was worthwhile, it was not a waste. it was ballsy as fuck for bardugo to kill off what was one of the main characters. it was satisfying and relevant to his arc; he was killed because he believed in someone like him, in the humanity and love of not just Nina but all of her friends and the other Grisha he knew that Changed him from someone so blinded by hate. he died protecting his friends. It Was A Choice He Made and it actually frustrates me so much when people try to argue that kuwei (who keep in mind is held in perpetual ire because of the stupid fucking wesper interpretation) was better off dying because. idk. secondary character fodder. shock at still witnessing a primary character death. this sucks man.
i feel like im less anal than some about fan works that are made innaccurately. i don't care about them as standalones, i actually think it's kind of endearing that we can reliably get works that stretch far beyond canon accuracy. but i some people's only source Becomes the fanwork and they start actually spreading misinfo about what Happens For Real In The Book and then it starts pissing me off.
