If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.
1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.
2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.
3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.
4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.
5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.
Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.
Reblog to save for later. Your WIP will thank you.
Words to replace said, except this actually helps
I got pretty fed up with looking for words to replace said because they weren’t sorted in a way I could easily use/find them for the right time. So I did some myself.

jaiden animations is a triple a battery: asian, adhd, aromantic and in this essay i will...
how do i write?
idk man maybe put the pen to the paper, words to the google doc, quill dipped in ink, etc.
for reference i have NOT played the games so don't come at me. i know the anime is hated among the gamers.
anyways, dmc anime was actually so good. i love dante's character and that he's cocky but (mostly) powerful enough to back it up. i also love the commentary (even tho its so in-your-face about it lolol). and the FIGHT SCENES? the music that accompanied them was actually wonderful.
daredevil and nightwing crossover
matt murdock meets a new detective (recently transferred over to the nypd from bludhaven for some reason) who is ardently trying to do his best. on an unrelated note, a new vigilante is in his territory “nightwing”. suspicious
of course, with his enhanced senses, matt murdock knows immediately that nightwing and detective grayson are the one and same when daredevil meets the other vigilante helping out a frightened civilian. but he has to keep his own dual identities!!
shenanigans occur of murdock, sun culade of columbia law school, trying to outmaneuver the son of batman. meanwhile, they’re both stuck on the same case (in both identities) related to taking down fisk (or some other villain idk). idk i think it’s underrated duo in the mcu x dc universe.
i thought zuko would remain solely a childhood crush in the past.
little did i know what atla movie creators had in store.
platonic/familial-love centered media is so underrated.
let me have more goofy friend groups in going through various situations, people meeting unexpectedly and creating the best friendships, families that have problems but at the end of the day love each other so much. just about the human experience.
catholic guilt this, catholic guilt that. why can't it just be guilt?
why is my entire feed on insta + tiktok about heesung leaving enhypen. on a random tuesday too?
there is only room for one curly dark haired twink at the grammys and it shouldn’t be sombr
i propose that on entering fandoms, people needs at least 2 yrs in wattpad before they can even touch ao3
society if people in the timkon tag could wrap their heads around the idea that tim actually likes kon, instead of making 500 posts that read exactly like boomer style "i hate my wife" jokes but gay
ma knits and therefore kon knits and dabbles in crochet and in this essay i will...
headcanon that tim has a panic attack in front of kon for the first time and kon is so flustered that he strokes tim's face like how you would calm a cow down.
and tim is just shocked out of the panic attack
not to be woke but i was thinking about indigenous culture a fair bit during zootopia two. like damn, the lynxes really expanded and made snakes look like the villain for their own benefit. reminescent of something? I certainly thought so.
and also pawbert. like think about all that generational wealth and how people benefit from it. and i thought pawbert is lowk someone who pushes progressive ideas on the outside but on the inside is comfortable with the history of exploitation because it led to a position of a fairly luxurious life. like why would he try and get rid of that for "justice" ?
I had similar insights rewatching the movie, as it parallels the current situation in Brazil, for instance. Here, we're facing a major conflict between the demarcation of indigenous lands and the expansion of agribusiness. The issue is that this agribusiness isn't for domestic (internal) benefit, but rather for export. And most of the actions taken to expand agribusiness here are ILLEGAL—they invade indigenous territories, kill natives, and force these communities off their land (not to mention that they kill native wildlife, and poison food, land and rivers). On top of that, there's the whole issue of 'justice,' which virtually doesn't exist to punish this kind of conduct, since agribusiness is promoted by very wealthy people from here and abroad... And for me, the core issue is NOT POINTING OUT the REAL cause of all of it - capitalism.
yesyes i completely agree with you about the parallels and how its insane people can justify something as horrendous as murder for capital gain?? as if a human life is worth that much.
in america, i was thinking about the indigenous populations that lived on land that contained oil. there's this book called "killers of the flower moon" that got turned into a movie that fictionalizes the very real events of the Osage people, especially women, marrying white people and then those women would be murdered so that white people could steal the oil-rich land. and it's a very dark history of exploitation that got shoved under the rug. not to mention the violence against indigenous populations that still happens today.
