tchaikovsky is proud
In case anyone is baffled by this, there’s a Tchaikovsky piece in which there’s supposed to be a loud sound but he never specified what you should use to make that sound. People have done all kinds of weird shit depending on how they think the sound should, well, sound. Hitting a large piece of wood with a sledgehammer is a relatively conventional one.
OKAY I LOVE THIS

Fondly remembering the time that a cat owner casually entered their calico Maine Coon in a cat fancier's competition and the judges lost their minds because the cat was 1) male and 2) able to bear children
Anyway here's Dawntreader Texas Calboy as a silly lil kitten
Here's an excerpt from one of the articles about the drama his entry caused among the Cat Fanciers that I thought was very earnest and sweet <3
And also some of Calboy's children!
@pangur-and-grim
He is fearfully and wonderfully made!
I was about to say he would technically be an intersex king (not because I dislike the concept of trans cats, just bc intersex rep is sorely needed too) but I did some more reading on this icon and actually found the article OP referenced.
He's not your usual male calico kitty as it turns out. That's already cool and rare, but he's even cooler and rarer than that!
Calboy is a chimera!! Which is really fucking cool of you ask me. The chances of having a male calico this way are slim to none, but the mad lad still exists! What an icon. I would die for Calboy.
hey. If you claim to be body positive but then turn around and use traits that are hard or impossible to control to shame people or make fun of them, you are not body positive. “But it’s just a joke!!!” and a bad one at that. But at least it’s perfect at showing that you are, in fact not. body. positive. Yes, this includes “jokes” about balding. Yes, this includes “jokes” about penis size. Yes, this includes “jokes” about being fat. Yes, this includes “jokes” about stutters. Yes, this includes “jokes” about anything and everything of these sorts.
Just stop.
If I had a dollar for every “progressive” person who size-shamed men and made creepy comments about men’s genitalia, I’d have enough money for the gender-affirming bottom surgery that they’d also disrespect.
It’s almost like joking about penis size is just as cruel and intrusive as joking about vagina shape. But it’s totally allowed, as long as your target is a man. Weird.
Before you say (or do) something that relies on mocking aspects of a person’s body, flip the gender dynamics in your mind. Would you say this about a cis woman’s body? Would you comment on a woman’s genitals as a signifier of how satisfying she is in the bedroom? Would you reduce a woman’s femaleness down to her vagina? If she’s acting in a disrespectful or egotistical manner, would you comment on the size of her vagina? Would you be so bold that you’d make these comments to your friends, coworkers, or family?
If you wouldn’t, don’t do the inverse to men.
Shockingly, cis men are human beings whose bodies deserve respect. Intersex men have all kinds of genitals, and those genitals are not bad, wrong, inadequate, or ugly. Mocking penis size is the opposite of body positivity. And, in many cases, it’s straight up sexual harassment. Your predatory misandry isn’t cute.
There’s another equally-popular post circulating on tumblr encouraging people to spam Russian-owned businesses with bad reviews on Google Maps. Jewish-owned restaurants in the U.S have also suffered from spam reviews because of antisemitic campaigns on social media to run Jewish-owned places out of business. This is despicable and your hatred is directed towards the wrong people and places.
Please direct your rage at Putin and those enabling him, not your sister’s ballet teacher Svetlana, ffs why is this hard.
Many of the same Russians and eastern Europeans who immigrated to this country being attacked right now, did so specifically to get away either from Putin or men like him. These people deserve our compassion and support now more than ever.
Like. The quote “I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend” is such an integral quote/concept to LOTR that I just cannot for the life of me comprehend how people come away from LOTR inspired to write the grimdark i-love-war-and-suffering stories that populate fantasy
literally JRR TOLD us that if more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. But did we listen? No of course not! More angsting about redeeming our rightful throne by slaughtering hundreds!!!
I personally feel there’s a strong correlation between the ‘heroes save suffering world through WAR AND SUFFERING’ school of fantasy and the people who think Aragorn is the hero.
Instead of, you know, functioning entirely as a) a healer, b) a distraction, and most importantly c) a hobbit delivery system.
Hobbits brought down Sauron AND Saruman, thwarted Denethor’s insanity, stopped the Witch King of Angmar, thwarted Saruman again, and REBUILT AFTER THE WAR. And they did it all with, I swear to God, the POWER OF FRIENDSHIP.
Bilbo befriends Gandalf and a bunch of cranky dwarves, intervenes repeatedly to try to prevent dragon attacks, murder and war, and then just WANDERS HOME WITH THE RING.
Bilbo’s POWER OF FRIENDSHIP allows him to actually leave the Ring, something nobody’s ever done before.
Frodo and his friends set off to take the Ring to Elrond, make friends with the local reclusive demigod and survive purely thanks to THAT FRIENDSHIP.
The hobbits unite the Nine Walkers with FRIENDSHIP.
Merry and Pippin befriend the reclusive tree people, GOODBYE SARUMAN.
Frodo trots across the world befriending people and gets them all the way to the fiery mountain, when Sam’s friendship GETS THEM THE REST OF THE WAY.
Meanwhile, Pippin makes friends in Minas Tirith and SAVES THE DAY AGAIN.
Merry befriends Eowyn and inspires ‘Dernhelm’ to just suit up and go like he does and distracts the Witch King at the crucial moment DAY SAVED THANK YOU.
Then when they think it’s all over, they amble back to the Shire, find it in trouble, and CALL ON THEIR FRIENDS TO FUCKING CARE BEAR STARE SARUMAN OUT OF TOWN.
So, you know, any swords-and-orcs fantasy that has the Aragorn/Boromir character as the hero and no hobbits? You know that author Missed The Point. Aragorn was a great guy, but he wasn’t the hero. The hero, always, was the Ordinary Person, the Little Guy, the kindly souls who never wanted to pick up a sword, but did it because it needed to be done.
many people think they know the ‘ Tolkien hero’, but they do not. they skim, they assume that theres some destined turnip farmer who defeats evil because prophesy and gets the girl and theres a happy ending. missing every point of Tolkien they believe Aragorn is the hero and his virtue was valor the true Tolkien hero hates adventure, every step of the way wishing they were back at home having eggs for breakfast and cake for teatime, and the only reason they havent left to go back home is they fight to preserve eggs and teatime as something that exists at all. on their adventures they saw the beauty of the world and would defend that beauty even if it meant great personal sacrifice. the true Tolkien hero is Samwise and his virtue was compassion the evil may be beaten back, but never truly gone, you may have returned home but your scars remain eggs for breakfast and cake for teatime are not somehow magically better because you bled for them, your journeys should be seen as a necessary pain and not something to glory you spit in the eye of glory for youve seen good men die for honor and never again will they return home or sit beside you in the garden watching the sunset
to understand the heros journey is to understand the pain of loss and the compassion that keeps you together
James Norrington did nothing wrong. His only crime was being a Jane Austen hero in a Disney movie based on a theme park ride.
Okay, no. I tried, but couldn’t just let this post stand. Listen, OP, I agree with you 10,000%, but it is so much worse than that.
In CotBP, where the criticism that James is boring is most likely to come up, we can see in his introductory scene that James is head over heels for this woman by Regency standards. I mean, the unflappable, highest ranking Naval officer in Port Royal is reduced to a stammering, awkward mess around Elizabeth. If this were an Austen novel, y’all would be fucking swooning.
And what of the deleted scenes? (Don’t even get me started on this, I will rant for hours about how salty I am that they cut them.) We see James agonizing over the fact that he believes Elizabeth has only accepted his proposal as a means to an end. His stony veneer cracks, and we get to see him vulnerable!
‘Is it so wrong that I should want it given unconditionally?’ is such a fucking incredible line, and in a period drama, would be seen as a declaration!
But James isn’t in a period drama. He’s in a Disney movie based on a theme park ride. The film is an unapologetic mishmash of genres, and he has committed a cardinal sin by falling in love with Elizabeth, a modern character. She practically rolls her eyes at his heartfelt confessions! She wants nothing to do with his subtle emotional advances!
While, in a Austen novel, James Norrington would have been the clear hero and most obvious choice for Elizabeth to make, she is completely uninterested because he’s made the mistake of being period appropriate and not a product of the early 2000s like the rest of the main cast.
And the worst part is…once James changes so that he fits into their world…he is killed.
But that’s a discussion for another time.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
@meganphntmgrl and i talked about this endlessly when I was in NYC (and i’m trying to make her read Pride and Prejudice just to prove this point lmao). I’m not even convinced that Elizabeth has this degree of non-interest in him, though. I think she just already has a really big crush on Will and thinks, due to the circumstances of their meeting, their being the same age and everything, that they’re meant to be together. (Is that a convention of modern storytelling? Little bit, yeah, but it’s not unknown to either mythological romances or period romances - the class divide between them, and importantly, Elizabeth’s desire to be with him overwhelming her sense of convention and propriety, is what stands out to me the most as a 21st century detail.) All that said, she doesn’t expect she can actually be with Will at the start of COTBP, and seems to be really considering James’ proposal. He’s not what she wants in life, but she’s not disgusted or rolling her eyes at him. In her words, more or less, she kind of knew he might propose, and knows her father is all for the match, but it still took her off guard. She’s having to decide on a realistic course for her life and to put aside her dreams, because she’s a woman now, whether she feels ready for that or not.
COTBP is a film written by men that thinks it’s a story about a girl being forced to choose between reality and romantic fantasy, and it’s very clear that Elizabeth knows that Norrington is an appropriate match for her. Even though she does, in the story, accept his proposal as a means to an end, her acceptance is still fully serious. (And for all I might joke about her dumping him or whatever - the proposal doesn’t get a big, dramatic rejection. He sees her standing beside Will and asks if this “where [her] heart truly lies”, and she confirms it. The breakup is implicit, but he instigates it, seeing this is what she wants.) Elizabeth’s heart might belong to another man, but there’s no sulking or anger or even too much reluctance when she accepts James; she might even know they could be happy together.
When Will reminds her that her fiancé will want to know she’s safe after the climactic battle, as much as it hurts her, Elizabeth leaves.
tl;dr Elizabeth isn’t so much of a Spunky Modern Heroine Rejects All Trappings Of Period Drama stereotype that she doesn’t compromise on what she wants as society, her family and her fiancé dictate. She accepts James’ proposal and is prepared to marry him; she never tries to run off with Will; it is James who breaks their engagement for her happiness. There is no indication that Elizabeth particularly dislikes him; he just isn’t Will.
Then I just really really love their relationship dynamic in DMC and AWE because it’s not founded on expectation or obligation anymore and it isn’t hindered by propriety. As soon as those things go away, they actually relate to each other like two people who have known each other for ages. Elizabeth isn’t an unfriendly sort of person, but she doesn’t just go around relating to the other characters she doesn’t know very well. The bits of conversation she has with James Norrington in Dead Men’s Chest are more real conversation than she and Will ever have in the entire film trilogy. Will and Elizabeth get these pining, lovelorn speeches and bits of drama, but James and Elizabeth just talk like old friends. You already know about the deleted scene where they casually strike up conversation on Isla Cruces; I love the moment where he makes a comment suggesting his dark mental state, and she gives him a look I can only describe as Suddenly Interested.
And she holds his gaze for a couple of frames!
So, not like, romantic interested. But like. Realizing this guy she’s known since forever has depth, and she wants to see it.
They’re interrupted by Jack, who is in this film particularly (a lot more than I realized, actually, but on the writers’ commentary Ted and Terry cannot stop bringing it up) is hoping to get Elizabeth to himself, and clearly picks up on this moment as infringing on that hope.
Curse of the Black Pearl was consciously written to frame Elizabeth as the protagonist, and when she chooses Will at the end, it’s because he and he alone among her potential love interests embodies her romantic dream. Torn between the reality of Norrington, a man she’s always known might propose to her, a lawful man, a good and honest man, but embodying the smothering sense of obligation that comes with her class and gender role - and the reality of Jack Sparrow, a pirate she’s read about with eagerness who shows her that pirates genuinely are pretty scummy people, dirty and disloyal to everyone - Will appears to offer her a third option: someone who breaks the law, but only for the right reasons; someone who defies social convention, but only to better society.
Except Ted and Terry are men and what seems obvious to me is that the third option Elizabeth really needs is to graduate from the damsel role life appears to have slotted her into and become the romantic hero she dreams of. Sure, I buy that she loves Will, with a sort of infatuated and light-hearted love that could develop into something more but could just as easily not - but most importantly, what Will represents to her is a projection of the life she wants for herself.
And acquires, in the next two films.
Elizabeth’s narrative arc, if it weren’t tucked underneath or behind everybody else’s, is the most well-developed narrative arc in the trilogy, well beyond the first installment which is the only one that they actually wrote to particularly revolve around her. Jane Austen heroine? Maybe. Probably not. But the protagonist we deserved, most definitely.
And as much as I do like Will as a character - I actually think his storyline would have gotten the resolution and impact it deserved if he hadn’t been treated as the protagonist, as much as I think hers would have been, but this post isn’t an excuse for me to air my grievances lol - the character whose storyline most follows hers is Norrington.
Her arc is about finding her place in the world, rejecting the specific oppressive reality she believes is inevitable as a well-bred 18th century female and embracing the heroine swashbuckler she’s wanted to be all her life but projected onto male love interests. And this arc is a microcosm of the larger plot in a way no one else’s is - Beckett’s threat to end the age of piracy and keep the entire ocean under his thumb threatens her specific character growth and reflects the world she’s trying to escape in a way that is not half so resonant for anybody else.
Will’s story is, excepting turns of the plot in which he’s trying to save Elizabeth, entirely about his relationship with his father, and how that affects his identity. It has nothing to do with society beyond the tensions in the first film where he wants to be respectable but has learned his father really was a pirate all along - after that film, there is no thematic or actual connection to society in Will’s plot, which is why it gets so exclusively connected to the supernatural storyline. But Norrington’s arc is also about his place in the world. After the first film, in which he and Jack and Will operate as foils to one another, each of them demonstrating one of the paths Elizabeth may follow as she grows increasingly experienced and consequently disillusioned, Norrington has his fall from grace and subsequent identity crisis. His maintaining the wig and coat while a drunken, miserable wreck on Tortuga, and his willingness to throw everything away to regain his former standing, implies that the role of Naval Officer was the whole extent of his identity. So, yes, the man lacks a viable personality in COTBP - it works out to seem intentional by the sequel, because it becomes clear the role he was inhabiting was the only person he knew how to be, and without it he discovered how little of a person he was. This is a grim inversion of Elizabeth’s storyline. Elizabeth becomes more and more her true self, including symbolically casting off and manipulating her wedding gown, while Norrington symbolically clings to the relics of his former life and wallows in existential despair.
By the time of AWE, Norrington has discovered that his is not, in fact, nothing, without his social role - as evidenced by his willingness to betray all that he must stand for when that role has been resumed, to “choose a side”, and to choose Elizabeth’s. But yes… then he dies.
Both in the substance of their actual conversations, which, owing to their rarely being about love, convey a greater sense of compatibility than Will and Elizabeth’s conversations never being so casual and often running to the dramatic, and the symmetry of their narrative arcs, the story of Elizabeth and James Norrington really would have made a perfect romance.
@morethanprinceofcats really out here bringing the “in this essay I will…” meme to life
@smallvillecommunity this is…….. the nicest thing……… anyone has ever said to me

Good morning to the drunk stranger and him ONLY.
I...I don't know????
Gather ‘round kids: I had a coworker mention to me this morning that it’s impossible to get grease stains out of fabric. As a former chemistry minor who worked two years under the table doing housekeeping and who generally tends to be a fucking disaster, I am here to tell everyone that it absolutely is not impossible, in case this is a widespread belief. Here are a few of my favorite cleaning stain removers that I always have at home.
Here are some options:
A Tide™ pen.
I’m a generic kinda lady. I hate promoting brands 99% of the time. BUT if you catch absolutely any kind of stain before it gets ground in, you can get most of it out with one of these babies. I’ve tested it on blood, chocolate, coffee, guacamole, pizza sauce, red wine on, on that one time i accidentally slopped some oil I was supposed to be using on antiques onto a fancy rug (also an antique but not the one I was gunning for). If you’re washing something delicate, pump it onto your finger a couple of times and gently rub it in. I’m not sure what they put in these things but I’m pretty sure it’s an arcane secret.
Dish soap
Granted, this is a little trickier for upholstery/carpet, but it can still be done using a rag, some water, and some patience. But for clothing, just pour some soap on the stain and rub it in under cold running water.
Absolutely any clear alcohol is your new best friend
You know the old “white wine to clean red” trick? Well, this is its updated sister I like to call “you, too, can use coconut rum to get red jello shot out of your nice white dress”. It’s a nice party trick. Straight vodka works even better. For every day situations involving any kind of alcohol-related spills (including markers)–and especially work situations–rubbing alcohol is ideal. To quote another adage, this one from every chemistry teacher you will ever meet, “like dissolves like.”
Hydrogen Peroxide
It can get blood out of absolutely anything, including your mattress. It reacts with the iron in hemoglobin, which breaks down the molecule, causing it to lose its red color. So make sure you’re not using a cast iron skillet to wash your period underwear in.
Vinegar
This will dissolve lime buildup overnight. Fill a bag, tie it around your showerhead, and presto. You can also use it to scrub the area around your sink and to break up any buildup in pipes. (Limeaway™ is for rich people.)
Baking soda
This is great if you have a pet or child who peed on the carpet. Just cover the area, wait until it dries, and vacuum it up. The longer you leave it, the better it will do at removing the smell. It’s also good removing mild odors from a small space, like a fridge or a laundry hamper.
Charcoal
This is your heavy duty odor killer. A little goes a long way. In chemistry, activated charcoal is used as a purifier in reactions, and in medicine, it can be used to treat mild poisoning/overdoses. In your car that smells like someone died because you forgot you had potatoes in the trunk for six months? All you need are regular old charcoal briquettes. Stick a couple handfuls in a flat box and the smell will be gone overnight. Guaranteed. For larger areas, just use more charcoal.
Baking soda is also good for stuff stuck on pots pans and your stove top. Add a little bit of water and elbow grease and it’s like magic
@howtogrowthefuckup
Baby shampoo will get oil stains out of clothing even if it’s been washed and dried several times. Shampoo is formulated to remove oil from organic stuff.
Fabric cleaning tips. good to know for sewers.
Helpful!!!
Thank you guys so much! I have so many shirts i can’t wear anymore bc im a messy one
WE LOVE TO SEE IT!!!!!
from: https://www.syfy.com/syfy-wire/futurama-hulu-revival-voice-actors-support-john-dimaggio
realizing from the notes that a lot of people werent aware of the the little stunt hulu/disney pulled!! yeah they offered him a lowball amount and wont pay him competitive pricing. then they announced the revival without finalizing his contract, probably to push him towards signing on at low pay to avoid being recast. apparently theyre still in talks so dimaggio could still get on the show, but he is standing his ground (as he should) and added that he wants better pay for his cast members as well so i fear its unlikely.
its really good to see all the fans and friends in the industry sticking up for him, hopefully if we cause enough of an uproar theyll realize how integral dimaggio is to the futurama legacy. his role as bender is iconic alone but he played many roles throughout the show and it just wouldnt be the same without him.
spread the word!! we got #bendergate to trend on twitter recently so that is a helpful tag to use when discussing this! dimaggio is also aware of this tag and seems to be keeping up with it somewhat.
Voice actors are still getting paid less than they deserve even after their strike several years ago. If you didn’t hear about it (and if you’re not a gamer or into animation or audiobooks that’s fair) they were not only striking for more pay, they also wanted more transparency in the casting process and safe working conditions. There was more, but that was the main focus.
Voice actors often work long hours and directors would call for take after take after take even when it was a screaming role. VAs often found themselves being pushed past their physical limits, resulting in overstressed or damaged vocal chords in search of that perfect take which could result in unpaid leave to recover.
The production companies also engaged in shady casting practices. VAs would audition for roles with little info beyond male/female character and perhaps the genre. Multiple VAs found themselves blindly acting out a role, paid peanuts and only after the show/game/book was released finding out they’d paid peanuts for portraying one of the most iconic characters ever. The blind casting also reduced diversity casting. Laura Bailey and other were dogpiled on social media for accepting PoC roles, when they themselves didn’t even know what character they were playing. Laura resigned from the role in question and demanded a WoC VA be cast when she found out, but she received a lot of unnecessary abuse in the meantime.
Disney, Hulu and other companies are not trying anything new or unique trying to force John DiMaggio to take a pay cut or walk out on his role. This is bullshit and it needs to stop.
mads mikkelsen and robert pattinson need to do a movie together just because the promo interviews would be chaos personified
don't hide this in the tags say it loud and proud
A really good tragedy is one in which it simultaneously seems like there are a million and one moments in which a single character could’ve made a different choice and everything could’ve ended up better, and like nothing could ever have averted this terrible end.
#uh huh uh huh uh huh#it really all comes down to characterization tbh#knowing the characters COULD have made a different choice#but also knowing those particular characters never WOULD have#it reminds me of that post about shakespearean tragedies#and how say if you put othello in hamlet’s plot#he’d kill claudius immediately#just like if hamlet was in othello’s shoes#he’d out think iago#but it’s because they are who they are (in part) that tragedy ensues (via @nancywheeeler)
The ancient greek playwrights had a saying: “Character is fate.”
This is what they meant.
my professor said my assignment was “late” because it was due on friday………like phil my dude last time I checked the concept of time is dead and days don’t exist anymore
COME THRU PHIL!!!!
