Much Love,
The Black Collegian
and the older generations wonder why we’re always mad
finding out people dont usually add numbers by first adding something to make a ten (for example 7+6= 7 plus 3 is 10 plus another 3 is 13) & that its actually an adhd thing is the WILDEST shit literally ive lived like 10 years (or however old i was when i learned to add and stuff) thinking thats how everyone does it. what the fuck
What
It’s also an autism thing, apparently.
W H A T
Oh yeah! This is also part of why autistic people/people with adhd struggle in math classes. Our brains process math and numbers in a totally different way. Many people on the spectrum struggle with the “show your work” part of math because we can’t exactly tell you why it works/how it works. We just kinda do it
This is how we teach math at our school. It’s required that students use this to do their mental math during number talks!
The problem is that it’s just as strict in keeping kids from using standard algorithm. So if they’re better at it that way, then they have the same problem just with different rules!
Have you ever seen a violinist going APESHIT?!
Be sure to check out IAmDSharp!
GO OFFF
Ok so I’ve been playing for 18 years and i’m a string teacher. Can i just say how IMPORTANT it is for young kids to see a BLACK, MALE-PRESENTING PERSON playing, nae, SHREDDING on a violin? I’ve know maybe 5 black people who played stringed instruments throughout my schooling and teaching (predumably because i’m an upper middle class white woman). In districts where the population is predominantly black, funding is always low, so the instruments are crappy. Kids quit, or the program is dismantled. I’ve seen very few professional string players who are black.
Obviously there are black string players. We just don’t see them because they “don’t look like” string players.
This person is the real deal. They were clearly classically trained, and seems to have some fiddle training as well. How cool is that?
Added to my work playlist along with Black Violin!
Let’s all say white people things.
We all have that one person who helps keep us grounded.
Thanks to my husband. ❤️
hey since apparently some people didn’t know this
if your family is low income, you can take your sat for free – twice!
and as a bonus, you can waive 4 college application fees. so like if a college you wanna apply to has a $20 fee, you can use one of your freebies to not have to pay that. four times. that means you can apply to at least 4 colleges (more if you can find ones with free applications) for no cost at all.
check in with your guidance counselor and see if you qualify – at my school, we qualify if we’re on free or reduced price lunch. my waiver had 2 free act’s included too.
boosts appreciated! a lot of people don’t know about this and it can save you a lot of much-needed money. tell your friends. tell your friends’ friends
and this is all directly from the college board website so it’s legit
Lots of people at my school did this! Also look into your state college’s fee waiver options. In California if you qualify for this, you can likely also qualify to apply to 4 UC’s and 4 Cal States for free, as well as get 4 Common Application waivers!
In case any of my US people could use this for them or their kids.
Boosting for teachers!
I did this when I was in high school
I didn’t know!!
every time my husband puts on his glasses he starts yelling at me about how he can see stuff and he hates it. what im saying is please get your kids to an eye doctor before they turn 18 or else theyre going to spend their entire lives literally despising sight
its too much information i hate to see all the little letters and i hate it when the world goes from low contrast to high contrast on demand
this is what happens when you wholeheartedly thought you had 20/20 vision your whole life and you didnt
Are they the same person or……
this uh… this uh… the post was.. about the.. the person who responded.. who i… live with and am gonna marry, yeah..
Bahahaha I have nothing but love for you, I know what’s going on as much as I need to, I believe.
Your profile pictures just look similar when they are small, and it struck me as funny and wanted it on my blog. Sorry if I bothered you by my love of being tickled by things that only make sense in my head without explanation.
oh look at that you’re actually super sweet. i had no idea, i just thought you were one of the interlopers who sometimes shows up lol you didnt bug me at all! x
Oh man I didn’t know I needed glasses until I went to go take the test for my license, so that sucked adjusting. It was like, dramatically wandering around going “I bet there’s extra words here!” and shit
In 5th grade my teacher was like “you do better the closer to the board you are… can you see?” And i was like “of course i can see, nobody would be able to read the board from that far away.” To me, who was only aware of my own eyesight, 15 feet away was “too far,” but my parents and teacher were like “umm??” So my parents took me to the optometrist and it turns out i couldnt see. I still remember the sense of wonder when i got my first glasses and found out that grass can actually look like individual blades from further away than 8 inches. Like i spent an entire week just… looking at things from far away.
When you spend your whole life squiting at blurry objects, you don’t realize that it’s not supposed to be blurry. I can understand how finding out as an adult that your experience could have been better might make you a little angry lol.
This! I’m third grade I remember telling my mom that I didn’t like when the teachers wrote in chalk on green chalkboards because I couldn’t see it well. (In my head, it was the fault of the teacher for not pressing hard enough or the wrong color chalk/board.) Mom (who has actually horrible eyesight and wore bottle cap lenses from a young age) says to sit closer to the board. I tell her I think I need glasses because other people could read it when I couldn’t. She put me off for a long time, just telling me to always get closer to things I couldn’t see well. Finally, I went to the eye doc. Turns out - I really couldn’t see!
I came out with my glasses remarking about how amazing it was that you can see individual leaves on trees while driving down the road and that highway signs were much more useful than I thought, because most people could see them at a much greater distance instead of practically having to pass it before I could make out the letters.
Go figure? 🤷🏻♀️
A little PSA about ASL for ‘Thank you’! I’ve had all of these signed to me accidentally hahaha. And whenever I sign thank you to non signers, sometimes they thought I was blowing a kiss to them. T_T ✩ Twitter ✩ Tapastic ✩ Facebook ✩ Patreon ✩

Thank you, @redfernfrog
I got my package full of all the cool goodies! I’m the worst at checking my leasing office for packages, but I got it!! Thank you so much!
Good stuff.
This. This is good fiction writing advice. I really appreciate how it was formatted as “this is a common problem, here is a solution to try in your own work” and not “oh god, don’t do that!” without any extra help. And I extra appreciated the “don’t rely on adverbs” bit, because they do have their place but they aren’t the only way actions can be emphasized.
This is so

Tumbler Teacher’s Amazon Classroom Wish Lists 2018-2019
Hello Wonderful Tumblrites,
Every year, teachers spend on average $500 on their classroom of their own money. I know many teachers who spend considerably more. Each year, I request links to wish lists from the teachers on Tumblr to share; we call it Teachmas. It is wonderful to have support from all over as we prepare for the new school year. Please consider purchasing an item, if money is tight, reblogs also help! Thank you so much!

Emotional Overlap / Inside Out
You know, this is actually pretty useful for people who struggle to understand/identify their emotions.
Proof that hatred is fear of what you don’t understand or like
I haven’t seen the movie but this is a great reference
There was more legitimate science in ‘Inside Out’ than there was in ‘Interstellar’. [source]
of course there was! if at this point you dont know they consulted actual child psychologists for accuracy thats on you tbh tbh

Oh thank the gods
