Cumplane-brained rn and thinking about Xiang Fei's internal monologue about Peerless Cucumber just before his death in the original extras. I need to just how much people need to remember XF was not normal about SY too.

It might be a bit strange discussing a trashy novel when it’s a trashy novel that you’re from, but I think Shen Qingqiu manages his existentialism pretty well. Unlike Shen Yuan, who has a tendency not to handle things well…

Turns out Qi and Jiu have cultivation potential. However, without access to a proper manual, and safe environment, they quickly decide to keep it at the energy transfers. Neither of them wishes to lose the other to qi deviation.
There are some slight advantages regardless, aside from the ability to keep warm, the siblings also fell sick less often than other street children, and qi seems to ever so slightly dim the hunger pangs and endless fatigue coming from chronic malnutrition.
Xiao-Qi may be angry at the world, but there's one part of it she cannot bring herself to hate. They are the other street children. They may steal the best begging spots, beat her up until she parts with some of her meager coins, and bully A-Jiu, she cannot resent them (except for bullying her little gege). The child she is wants to bit and scratch and throw their food on the dirt, but the adult she was only feels deep sadness for kids who only know survival and cruelty.
Qi-er nearly dies when she's eight. The slavers decided that A-Jiu, now three, is old enough for their brand. She goes feral. Nearly taking out a guard's eye with her broken fingernails and biting a chunk of another one's hand. The beating she recieves almost drown the sound of searing flesh and A-Jiu's screams.
Qi-er has two cracked ribs, four broken fingers, and bruises all over her body. The only reason they didn't kill her was because San-jie hid the dull knife Qi-er snagged three towns ago. She does not forgive the girl for weeks.
Qi and Jiu spend the following month empty eyed, and refusing to let go of each other. Every day, they sit on random street corners and share qi back and forth, finding comfort painless intimacy that did not require words.
San-jie is sold to a brothel when Qi-er is 9. The girl is only 13. While she promises she'll be okay, soothing the two siblings with assurance that she'll have a stable roof over her head, and regular warm meals, San-jie can't hide the small strain on her smile. They all know all this means a constantly rising depth to the owner and what will eventually be expected of her to pay it back.
That night, missing the larger body usually sandwiching her again A-Jiu, the constant anxiety that's been simmering under Qi-er's skin, since she transmigrated, bursts forth. Even with malnutrition slowing things down, it's only a matter of time until she cannot hide her gender gender anymore. Puberty and periods are bound to show up eventually.
Everything after that is a haze. Qi-er remembers a knife, red hot from a fire she's holding it over, then a burning line on her face. She barely makes it back to the sleeping shed before passing out. When she wakes, much too late, her ribs are bruised and there's a cauterized cut across her nose, spanning from cheek to cheek.
Despite making it extremely hard to both eat or talk, and the daily dousing in cheap alchool the slavers torture her with under the guise of "keeping the wound clean", nothing can silence the tiny spiteful voice in her head going 'good luck selling damaged goods to a brothel, now.'
Soon after, she realizes she's now the oldest slave in the group. Qi-er and Qi-di become Qi-jie (there's no point hiding it now) and she's suddenly expected to care for more than just A-Jiu.
A-Jiu, all of 4 and with an violently possessive streak begins glaring at the other kids and muttering under his breath about 'low IQ NPC fillers'. It's something Qi-er quickly nips in the bud. People around them are exactly that, people, with feelings and aspirations, and while dehumanizing all of them may make dealing with everything easier, it also isolate yourself from others around you and blind yourself to reality. She isn't sure how well her 9yo brain manages to convey adult thoughts, but A-Jiu stops with the comments. She is well aware though that will stop her didi from glaring.
They're 11 and 7 respectively when they hear a passing comment about a 'Cang Qiong sect'. Jiu-di utters his most impressive rant from both lifetimes, cursing 'Airplane you rotten author..' and 'endless papapa'.
They're in a porn novel. And not any porn novel, the one Yuan-ge claimed to loathe despite having read all of it and owning an embarrassing amount of its merch.
The upside to this situation is that the porn aspect is not immediately apparent, and Jiu-di retains most of his knowledge about the books. They start planning. Trying to place themselves geographically relative to the sects, and keeping an eye out for cultivators.
As it turns out, cultivators do not give a shit about street rats, and those who do have deeply sinister intentions. Still, they gather information as best they can. Qi-er begins practicing her writing again, using a stick and dusty ground. She's lucky whoever wrote this world couldn't be bothered to use traditional writing. She teaches the other children as best she can and even make some coins showing cooks, sex workers, and the like how to write their names. Whenever asked how she knows all that, Qi-er makes up a new lie. 'An old man started teaching me three towns back', 'I'm obviously a kid from a disgraced noble family', or, her favorite 'I ate a weird fruit and now I know my characters'.
The realization that the town they spent their first winter in this world was their best bet all along stings a little, but, after years of traveling, locked up in a cramped cart, on their eight year, the slavers finally start heading west again.
She's 14 when they start truly planning their escape. The city they've stopped at is on the bigger side and within a week's travel from Cang Qiong. Hiding Qi-er's gender is getting harder and harder, and she's heard slavers talking about getting some make-up. Combined with the fact she's been getting more food (it looks better to buyers if the slaves aren't just skin and bones) it's only a matter of time until they hide her scar under white powder and pawn her off to a brothel or another.
They're close to fleeing when everything goes to shit. A kid from another slaver gang tries and fails to pickpocket Qi-er and runs into the streets in an unnecessary escape attempt (she has no intentions of pursuing him). As he crosses the road, he trips, just as a noble's horse drawn coach turns the corner. Before she realizes what she's doing, Qi-er grabs a pebble and sends it in a qi infused throw at the horse's flank.
I accidentally posted this so I'll add a quite summary of what's left of act 2. Both siblings get bought by Qiu Jianluo, Qi-er gets assigned as Haitang's handmaiden while Jianluo drags A-Jiu away.
That night, Qi-er finds A-Jiu locked up in a shed. She asks they flee together, but is unable to pick the lock. A-Jiu begs her to go 'Meimei, please'. So, Shen Tang obeys her san-ge, but Yue Qi promises A-Jiu she'll come back.
