"You told me once to take a risk. "Gideoâ"
He rose a finger to shush the girl, standing firmly in front of her.
"You told me to take a risk."
Gideon took a step forward, eyes set on Dorcas. They hadn't been graduated two months and had already taken on more responsibilities than imaginable as they fought the seemingly endless war. And as it grew more and more overwhelming, people were unwinding ( some poorly, others positively ). Life was far too short to dance around maybe's and what if's.
Dorcas built her walls higher than ever and denied herself so much as a lingering glance to the boyish man whom had found a constant presence around the brunette.
The silence caused her throat to tighten and body to tense as she prepared herself for whatever was to come. The last thing she expected was what she soon after witnessed.
He clutched the bottom hem of his shirt and swiftly pulled it up and over his head. As much as she wanted to deny herself the pleasure, Dorcas allowed her eyes to wander down his bare chest. Gideon took a step forward and to both of their surprise she met him halfway. Their lips collided and it wasn't long before their bodies lay tangled as the moonlight danced upon his back. He busied his hands in her hair and she buried her face in his neck inhaling the familiar cinnamon scent that seemed to be permanently embedded in his skin.
And just like that he crashed her walls to the ground without her ever realizing it.Â

eve of february fourth / great hall
The doors to the Great Hall were flung open, Filch's hand on the collar of the tall brunette. Her boots were soaked in mud, arms covered with scrapes, and hair disheveled. She knew Marlene was some distance behind her, but as of now she was completely alone. Her eyes fell upon the abundance of students. Some were tucked in sleeping bags, others lounging at the tables which had been pushed to either side of the hall.
Some students stared.
Dorcas was released by Filch and as he walked away he began grumbling about stupid girls under his breath. In that moment her legs stood still. The scene which just took place replayed over and over in her head.
The forest, the bloody centaur, the cries, the wolf.
She was strangely calm. Frankly, she was more in shock after the revelation with Lily in Hogsmeade than now. Utterly frozen as she processed the events, she was too far delved into her own mind to even notice a figure was standing in front of her.Â
the moment to f i g h t / feburary 4th / dorcas + marlene
They made a good team, always had and always would. They had a way of communicating that didnât require words, it was like they just knew what the other would do. It had always come in handy when they were sneaking around where they shouldnât or practically obliterating the opposition on the Quidditch field.
The teachers seemed to be discussing exactly what was going on fervently by Hagridâs hut. They were preoccupied with the threat that their school was facing that they didnât notice the two girls dart in among the foliage of the forest. It was only when the ferocious growls and howls of the wolves filled the air that they looked around, but by then the Gryffindors were hidden by the large trees and shrubbery.
It felt good to be running, feeling the air whip through her hair and blood pump through her body. The overbearingly strict rules had restricted her from stretching her legs and going for the sprints that she loved, sheâd missed them, that was for sure.
At first she didnât see the centaur and looked to Doe with a perplexed expression on her face, but then the pool of blood surrounding the tawny coloured creature came into sight. âMerlin,â she said, not quite sure whether it was to herself or to her friend. Before she could think, she was crouching down beside it, her fingers placed gently over its neck. There was the faintest throb of a pulse, but it was still alive. Marlene darted back to Doe, watching as the red sparks fly into the sky, now the centaur would have proper medical attention.
âLetâs go,â she whispered, sprinting off further into the woods. They moved deeper and deeper into the maze of trees and shrubs, determined to find the creatures that had threatened their school, their teachers and their friends. Marlene stopped for a moment, grabbing Dorcasâ arm and pointing out the blood that was smeared against the trunk of a tree. âTheyâre close,â she murmured. Â
Dorcas tightened her grip on her wand and only stopped moving once she was grabbed. Her eyes studied the crimson blood painted across the bottom of the tree trunk. Not saying a word, Dorcas pushed deeper into the forest. Her boots crunched against the fallen leaves and she could hear the echoed voices of her educators a well distance behind her. The full moon sat high in the night sky and it almost taunted her.
A loud noise bounced off the thick trees, though it was most definitely not the sound of a werewolf. Another centaur was injured. She couldn't help but to think if she and Marlene would be the next howling in pain.
In that very moment with adrenaline, fear, and the will to fight Dorcas made a decision. This is what she wanted to do. She'd always assumed she'd do something along the lines of defensive measures but she had never been so sure and so passionate about the idea as she was now. Granted, she was chasing werewolves after all. Â
Making down a steep hill at a high rate of speed, the girl came to a sudden stop. Holding her arms out to halt Marlene, her eyes pierced the darkness.
She felt as if they were being w a t c h e d.
Proceeding with caution, she outstretched her wand arm. And in that moment she felt immortal.
Somebody - something was there with them, hidden in the thick brush. Stepping forward, her boot landed in wet mud and she proceeded throughout until she were on stable ground once again. A chill ran down her spine and just as she were about to open her mouth, a new voice shrieked. "DORCAS MEADOWES AND MARLENE MCKINNON!" McGonagall bellowed, lips pressed in a tight line ( though it seemed she regretted her decision to yell upon the realization of what could be a few short feet away ). "You are to report to the castle immediately and your punishment will be severâ"
"Shh," Dorcas murmured in a small voice, completely poised. Pointing her wand in front of her, she held still for only a moment until bursts of red became spewing from McGonagall's wand. Dorcas quickly began interlocking her own spell work to the growling figure though just as she did several other professor's joined the scene. Too distracted in the moment she wasn't quite sure who had placed their hands on her shoulders. "Back to the castle. Back to the castle!"Â

"Are you seriously asking me the last time I took a risk? Why, Dorcas, I risk my job every day by debating whether to let scallywags like you get away with what they want." Though even through his smile, he could relent that those debates didnât cause an adrenaline rush. How could they? They took so little time, that there wasnât anything to become excited over.Â
There wasnât ever an overwhelming rush. But he wasnât going to admit that to Dorcas so easily.
Still, as much as he wanted to take her up on her offer, werewolves were out of the question. He would push himself past the boundaries of the courtyard, to linger closer to the forest, but he wouldnât step into the dark unknown just to play with werewolves.Â
He wasnât Fabian in this matter. ( because though they were so alike  they still differed on too many aspects )
So he still blocked her path, tapping her nose once more. âNope. No bath for you, missy. Youâre going to have to have a try at that when Iâm not around.â
They were different surfacely. He was polished; Gideon followed and enforced the rules. As for Dorcas, she was just about as jagged-edged as a person could be. She broke the rules, she talked back, she was consciously aware of the danger they all faced and she practically embraced it like an old friend. They were night and day â the sun and the moon.
Beneath that surface? They were practically i d e n t i c a l.
They had a cause. They would do just about anything for the said cause. Whether it be stopping a brat from breaking the rules or sneaking out at night to discover secrets the professor's buried, they were the same.
Perhaps that was why she wasn't irritated at his incessant enforcement. In fact, she respected it ( not that Dorcas would allow him to be aware of that ). But she wouldn't be Dorcas Meadowes if she didn't stop pushing.
"You either let me be or you drag my naked body from the bathrooms. Which do you think your superior would prefer?"
She smirked, lifting her own finger to tap his nose. Instead of continuing on towards the bathroom, she began backtracking towards the stairs she descended from. It was all simply a t e s t.
"Remember what I said, Prewett. Take a risk â leap." Â
Offering one last grin before departing, she murmured, "I'll be seeing you."

âFor Merlinâs sake, just grab my hand,â she shouted, trying to be heard over the chaotic noise of frightened students and frantic teachers. Marlene seized the tiny freckled Ravenclawâs hand, her nose wrinkled in distaste at the strawberry jam that seemed to be smeared across it. They pushed through the hundreds of students that seemed to be all heading in the same direction as one another. Once it seemed a tiny bit calmer; she let go of his hand and scuffed up his hair in a friendly manner, while simultaneously wiping the jam off her hands.
Marlene glanced around frantically, trying to see over the herd of students that were clashing and colliding with one another in order to try and get to safety as soon as possible. âWhere the bloody hell are you Doe,â she muttered, more to herself than anyone else. She let out a loud huff, shaking her head at the mess and confusion that presented itself in front of her. She had to get out.
A slightly taller but still scrawny boy started crawling on the ground, letting out a little yell. Naturally the little idiot had lost his glasses, in what seemed like the worst possible time to lose oneâs glasses. Honestly did people have any sense anymore?
âShut up a bit, yeah?â she hissed, darting towards him and helping him search frantically. It seemed like an impossible task, but she couldnât resist a damsel, well a dork in distress. It was the right thing to do, she knew that. But that didnât stop her from letting let out a dozen curses as someone trampled on her hand, most of which were barely in English and some of which were directed at the glassesless boy. Finally, her other not so bruised hand uncovered the slightly dusty pair of glasses and quickly passed them onto the boy.
With that, Marlene got up and darted through the crowds, almost imagining that she was part of an extraordinarily large and slightly manic Quidditch game. She could weave and cut through expertly, thanks to her training and before long, she made it to the doors. A triumphant grin tugged at her lips as she ran through the wide open doors.
âReady to go on a wolf hunt?â she whispered, pressing her back into the cold walls of the castle. The two continued down the path, carefully avoiding any teachers or anyone else that would try to get in their way. They were practically experts at that sport.
They had to be quick. They had to know how to weave in and out of shadows and when to duck or dive â and thankfully for them they read each other even better off the Quidditch field. There was no need to tug Marlene's hand when they needed to duck, she already knew. It was a well choreographed dance by now. The adults were all huddled around Hagrid's hut and were clearly organizing a plan, though teachers were already entering and exiting the thick forest simultaneously.
Hopping to the other side of the stone steps, Dorcas crouched as her walk turned into a run. Her eyes didn't leave the group once â that was until she heard them. They howled into the night, ferocious snarls echoing. They were taunting.
Dorcas accepted the challenge, regripping her wand and setting off in a sprint as she disappeared within the brush of the forest. With her wand outstretched she didn't slow down her speed, eyes piercing the darkness as she continued on her path. Â
"Marlene ..." she whispered upon coming across a small meadow. A bloody centaur lay. Lifting her arm, her wand set off red sparks high into the sky. This only decreased the distance between them and the adults as she were sure a team had already been sent in the direction.
Her legs pushed off the muddy ground once more as she set off in the westerly direction.Â

"On you go!" Dorcas called, and in the midst of her sprint she bent down to grip a pair of shoulders and pull the older boy back up to his feet whom had fallen due to the mass crowd. She pushed throughout the sea of students, her legs moving in only one direction; towards the back exit of the castle.
She skillfully maneuvered throughout the halls, ducking and diving at any chance she got. Her hand lifted her shirt slightly as she wielded her wand. Rounding a corner she came to a sudden halt at the sight of two girls curled up behind a suit of armor statue.
"Aye, whatâre you doing? Up, get up!"
The first year girl reached for her, and Dorcas immediately clutched her tightly and awaited her friend. Pushing their backs in the direction of the Great Hall, she shouted, âGo!â
Never in all her years had she experienced the castle as crowded as it was in that moment. She pushed and fought, determined to make it out. As she did so, she remembered the vow she made with Marlene McKinnon â her best friend. They sat in Marlene's bed, eating snacks they'd swiped from the kitchens, and both swore to each other that if there was a fight to be fought they'd be in the frontline. No sense of nervousness ran through her core. Actually, no sense of anything ran through her ( which was perhaps why she and Marlene would l i t e r a l l y be running in the wolves' den ).
Running out those wide open doors and having her face be slapped with the harsh wind she practically stumbled backwards, allowing herself a moment to catch her breath as she awaited Marlene in their designated spot. Footsteps echoed, and she knew her best friend too well to know that they didn't belong to her. Dorcas pressed her back to the castle, praying she would go unnoticed. As Professor Flitwick and Slughorn's walk turned into a run they made their way across the lawn and then disappeared on the downward climb to Hagrid's hut.Â
âDorcas is dead,â Alastor Moodyâs clear voice rang out in the room, each word without emotion and it took several moments for Marlene to process exactly what he had just saAt first; she couldnât quite comprehend those three simple words, even though death had become more of a presence that a shadow to her of late. With her father and her brotherâs untimely âaccidentsâ; losing people that she held so dear to her heart had become almost normal to her. However each life lost didnât make any of it easier.
A little cry of pain escaped from her lips as she looked across at Moody; her eyes wide with horror, not wanting to believe that this could be true, hoping that it was a cruel joke. Other people had started to react to the news, some had even headed her way, to comfort her but she pushed them away. They knew it had only been two weeks since her familyâs tragedy, it didnât seem fair for someone as important as Doe to be taken away from her. It wasnât fair.
Doe and Marlene wouldnât trade pained looks while Moody rattled off yet another speech that theyâd all heard before again, they wouldnât share a cup of coffee to save some money but then bicker over who drank the most again, they wouldnât ever share a bottle or two of firewhiskey when something had gone wrong again. Her best friend, her wildly beautiful and witty best friend was gone.
All the emotions about her rushed to the surface mixed with a kind of anguish that was hidden down at the very core of her being, creating an emotional cocktail bound to explode at any moment. Her heart felt like it was cracking in half; breaking for the one girl who had seemed so alive and who appeared as though she would defiantly take on death and win, while maintaining her perfect hair. Marlene felt as though she was being crushed into the ground and she gripped onto the edge of a desk; her hands going white with the pressure.
Tears had started to trickle down her cheeks. Merlin, she hated crying in front of other people. In fact, Doe was one of the rare few people that she could feel comfortable sobbing around. Before she could even think, she was striding towards Moody and then she pushed him against a wall, hard, with a thunderous look on her devastated face.
âWhy the fuck did you send her out on that mission? You made her go, you sent her off to her death,â she hissed, tears still falling down. Then Marlene slapped him as hard as she could muster on the cheek. It was then that someone restrained her, she wasnât sure who, it didnât matter.
âShe was my best friend,â she screamed, struggling against someoneâs grip. âShe was my best friend and now sheâs dead. Everyone around me dies⊠e-everyone but me,â
A scream ripped through her, shaking her to the very core while she stood to her feet as if she was talking to the sky. Her whole body was trembling with some sort of combination of grief and anger. âTake me instead, fuck, just take me, leave her⊠please,â

courtyard / february 3rd
Lily wasnât blind, nor was she unsympathetic.
There was a tightness in her chest as she listened to Dorcasâs words, as she smoothed back the errant strands of red hair and clipped them with the spare pin in her sleeve, moved them back from her face, providing herself with a false sense of openness. There were little other methods in existence to feel like this right now, and so, she took it where she could get it. She threw herself into assignments, She did her rounds. She made herself thrive in the concept of the schedule, or else, she might be the root cause of a row. That was the last thing the castle needed. She was getting her freedom through making sure no one else lost their sense of self. She could find herself in others during this time. It was, however, easier to convince herself of that mentally. When it came to actually handling things, throwing herself out there, keeping people safe - it was more taxing than she might want to admit. And it frightened her, how this made her feel. It frightened her, this pull at her arms and the clawing in her brain. It was all much more frightening than the tangible threats out there - if she was to see a boggart, she didnât know what it would be. Perhaps herself, lost and alone. Perhaps nothingness. Perhaps everyone else, on the floor, dead from their stress. For although the castle and the professors were doing their best to ensure that the students were being kept safe, it was solely physical safety. Mental safety was barely been regarded, looked after, asked about. That was up to them. And the stress mentally on the professors - if she and Dorcas felt like this, Lily didnât want to imagine what those in charge felt like, being on constant watch. After all, she and Dorcas had been the ones to overhear this. They knew better than anyone. And no one had thought to ask them. Too preoccupied with the news. But then again, perhaps it was b e t t e r that way, too. Lily didnât know if she could handle talking about it. Because talking didnât do anything. And though she preferred peace, showing love, if she had to do, then she would. She could. "Missed breakfast. Well, now, that is a crisis. No wonder moods were so foul.â Since she didnât know what else to do with herself, she slid onto the back of the bench, wincing at the cold metal through the thick fabric of her robes, and started in on braiding Dorcasâs hair. She didnât know quite what she would be doing specifically yet. But she would figure it out. Give herself something to focus on. "Perhaps I should make those rocks over there into biscuits and eggs."
There's an old saying that the truth will set you free. Though Dorcas has never disagreed with an idea more. Â
The truth of her knowledge would produce the fear she felt with every single step in the castle onto others. Her friends would try to fight â put themselves in harms way. And the youngsters whom have been trained to disregard the fear, that all will be well in little while, they would be h o r r i f i e d. So Dorcas kept her mouth shut.
Perhaps it was simply the presence of Lily that made her feel a sense of security. A shared knowledge. Dorcas knew the redhead almost like the back of her hand and it wasn't hard to tell that she was just as frightened as she was.
Dorcas Meadowes was always the strong one; she carried that front as if her life depended on it. But in that moment she felt no strength. She was scared â though not for herself. She didn't fear werewolves. She didn't fear You-Know-Who. She didn't fear d e a t h. But what she did fear? The life of her friends. The protection, or lack thereof, of the castle. The children being exposed to the darkness.
She had a hero complex. She wanted to save the masses and would do just about anything to achieve that, though at this point in time she felt as there was just about nothing to do. And it tore her to pieces. She refuses to be a damsel in distress, though has never felt more like one in her entire life.
Lily's hands made themselves busy on her hair ( she was particularly grateful that she wouldn't have to touch it before dinner ). "Lils. Do you ever just â"
Dorcas sighed, and the walls around her diminished.Â
"Do you ever feel like this is never going to end? It's almost like clockwork, really. Once we've gotten over a tragedy, another one rolls in. And I feel ... utterly weak. I can't just sit here. I need to do something. Anything."
OUTSIDE PREFECTS BATHROOM || 1.31.77
Daring. It was a quality all Gryffindor gals had, he figured, but Dorcas especially liked to push the limits. And this event only proved just how much she would push against him â figuratively and literally.Â
He slid across the floor, taking the long strides needed to take his rightful place in blocking her path. He might have brushed by her as well, wiggling his brows at her when he caught her gaze.Â
"One, I doubt Dumbledore would forget. He might be old, but heâs not senile. Two, I call bullshite to your back problems. And three, I am not a creep â not if people are going to look at me no matter what state Iâm in."Â
They were close again, and he reached to tap her nose. âGo back to the lionâs den, Dorcas.â
He intrigued her. Be it by his charming looks, light words, or the will to say no to the spitfire who mostly got all she wanted â he was almost a puzzle. For she didn't believe anyone didn't have two sides; one seen by many, and one seen by few.
As he tapped her nose, she felt her lips push into a wide smile. It was the most genuine one she'd offered lately, and it was one of her best trademarks.
"Gideon. When's the last time you took a risk? And not something mediocre like sneaking into a restricted bathroom. Like a blood pumping and adrenaline filled risk? Where every single nerve on your body is on edge?"
She tilted her head slightly and some would label it as venomous, others seductive. "Sneaking off the grounds to see what the world is like outside of our secured perimeter, playing with werewolves. Take your pick. Either way, you and I are going to take a r i s k. And in the meantime, I'm going to take a warm bath."Â
