Just like any other organism, plants can get stressed. Usually it's conditions like heat and drought that lead to this stress, and when they're stressed, plants might not grow as large or produce as much. This can be a problem for farmers, so many scientists have tried genetically modifying plants to be more resilient. But plants modified for higher crop yields tend to have a lower stress tolerance because they put more energy into growth than into protection against stresses. Similarly, improving the ability of plants to survive stress often results in plants that produce less because they put more energy into protection than into growth. This conundrum makes it difficult to improve crop production. I have been studying how the plant hormone ethylene regulates growth and stress responses in plants. In a study published in July 2023, my lab made an unexpected and exciting observation. We found that when seeds are germinating in darkness, as they usually are underground, adding ethylene can increase both their growth and stress tolerance. Plants can't move around, so they can't avoid stressful environmental conditions like heat and drought. They take in a variety of signals from their environment such as light and temperature that shape how they grow, develop and deal with stressful conditions. As part of this regulation, plants make various hormones that are part of a regulatory network that allows them to adapt to environmental conditions.

hate HATE so called educational biology videos that are like "look at this ugly animal. isnt it disgusting ? dont you want to throw up while looking at it ? isnt it so yucky disgusting" arent you supposed to appreciate wildlife and educate people on them ? what do people learn from this. like if a person goes to watch your video on flatworms and thinks theyre ugly little things that should be killed then what are you doing but reinforcing their belief. thats not educating them. i dont care if being all "haha kill it with fire im so quirky" gets you more views. you just kind of suck. also i spoke to the flatworms and none of them even knew you.

people do have some biases when it comes to animals that arent cute fluffy mammals. they think theyre gross or ugly. if you want to educate people about animals then you shouldnt play into these notions. you should educate people about the animal. why it looks the way it does and what purpose its features serve and what role it plays in its ecosystem. understanding things makes them less scary. people who watch you video should come away with a better understanding of the animal and not a confirmation of their belief that it doesnt deserve to be alive.

A tree dwelling cockroach that lights up like a firefly

A big spiny predatory katydid that lights up to lure the cockroaches

A freshwater mantis shrimp I could just find at the average creek like I can crawfish.

A "giant" (like 2 inches) flightless lousefly that can thrive on any vertebrate blood and bites things at night like a vampire bat, wouldn't spread disease or infest homes or even be any more painful than a mosquito but you know it'd freak people out real bad anyways. Just something extra to keep humans on their toes.

A giant (like 1 inch) snout mite because they're really fun carnivorous mites with pointy noses, I wanna be able to keep them as pets too, or an even more giant tick but it's a non-biting scavenger. I want a big friendly tick.

A freshwater goose barnacle that can grow on land and catch insects like a venus flytrap.

A fully terrestrial crab that lives positively everywhere just so we'd have a culture in which crabs have to be recognized as common woodland creatures instead of mainly sea or beach creatures. I just think that would be fun. Might be neat if it's also super spiny all over.

A positively colossal (half an inch) tardigrade. Some tardigrades are predators, it could be one of those. A ferocious mega tardigrade that eats worms and termites and things.

One single small, plain species of trilobite that survived extinction by coming onto land but it's a petty nuisance to us, like it loves to eat stucco or something.

A biting vampire butterfly. Vampire moths exist, but they're rare and nocturnal. The vampire butterfly should be common and act like any other butterfly except that it will bite you if it gets the chance. As with the woodland crab I just wanna see what cultural impact there'd be if one butterfly was scary. It should look really distinct among all butterflies for ease of artistic use. So nobody has to explain what kind of butterfly it is if they got it for a tattoo or put it on an album cover.

you heard of Lucihormetica? a burrowing, not arboreal cockroach that might not actually glow but it looks like it should. evidence so far that they bioluminesce is… shaky, at best

afaik we have only proved they fluoresce like this, but captive members of the genus don’t glow. other species in the genus are available as pets!

Sadly that particular photoset is of the one and only specimen ever collected of that species and its only known habitat was a volcanic island that exploded, so it's thought they don't exist now :(
