After almost a decade of wanting a dog of my own, the stars finally aligned and brought this little man into my life. I think it’s important to have someone or something that you need to care about other than yourself; it keeps us whole and reminds us others. This southern hound was rescued from a shelter in Alabama and made his way into our home thanks to the incredible people at One Tail at a Time. Bama can be found most days sleeping on our couch or underfoot in hopes of cheese and treats, and he is perfect.Â

Electron microscope video of a needle on a vinyl record.
Two incredible things:
1. This was much harder to make than it looks! To achieve this resolution with an electron microscope, it took 10 seconds to capture each frame of this “video.” The traditional 30 frames per second video was impossible. Instead, this is stop motion - like those Wallace and Gromit cartoons. Ben Krasnow of the youtube channel Applied Science took a picture, moved the record slightly, then took another image and on and on. Because electron microscopes can’t image electrical insulators, he had to coat the whole thing with a thin, thin layer of silver. You can watch the whole process in this video.
2. This gif not only shows us what a record looks like up close - it’s a visualization of the vibrations that make a song! If you took those wavy shapes into a digital player, you could actually hear the song being played.

One fan just left a sweet, clever birthday tribute to the late Mitch Hedberg
Mitch Hedberg, who brought an extremely laid-back delivery style to his absurd, quasi-philosophical observations and one-liners, would have been 48-years-old this Wednesday. Among his most famous and frequently quoted routines, as captured on his popular 1999 album Strategic Grill Locations, deals with the purchasing of doughnuts and the documentation thereof. To wit:
I bought a doughnut and they gave me a receipt for the doughnut. I don’t need a receipt for the doughnut. I’ll just give you the money, and you give me the doughnut. End of transaction. We don’t need to bring ink and paper into this. I just can’t imagine a scenario where I would have to prove that I bought a doughnut. Some skeptical friend: “Don’t even act like I didn’t get that doughnut! I got the documentation right here. Oh, wait it’s at home. In the file. Under “D.”
And now, a fan has paid tribute to the much-missed Hedberg in the most thematically appropriate manner possible by placing a single, frosted doughnut, accompanied by the prerequisite receipt, on the comedian’s grave at the Roselawn Cemetery in Roseville, Minnesota.

Happy birthday Mitch Hedberg!
He would’ve been 48 today.
Thanks for changing the way I’ll view broken escalators for the rest of my life.Â

David Bowie Tribute Illustration Series By Helen Green In Remembrance Of The Great Musician
After an immortal career as one of the most revered rock musicians, and a style icon who became known not just for music but a face for originality, eccentricity and sex, David Bowie has passed away at the age of 69 on January 10, 2016, after an 18-month struggle with cancer. The legendary rock star was born on January 8, 1947, and has had an illustrious career in music, and in tribute to his memory we’ve featured illustrations of him by Helen Green.
Helen Green is a Birmingham-based freelance artist specializing in portraiture and illustrations. Music and fashion are at the heart of her art and David Bowie had been a great source of inspiration in her illustrations. Of the two showcased here, the first was in honour of his latest album “Blackstar” and completed only a couple of days ago.
Green’s art is brought to life by her passion in rock music and fashion. David Bowie’s ever charming, and electrifying music and style have been appreciated by the Green and now can be shared with the world as they mourn the loss of one of the greatest rock stars of our time. You can find these and other prints of her designs in her Society6 shop.
