I wonder if this letter will reach you.
When I first woke up I was alone, and I wasn't in the hospital, I was in another one of my dreams. I was in a mansion, dark and gloomy, there weren’t any kids here. At least at first.
Although I was alone in the room, I heard noises coming from the door. Looking around I saw an opening in the wall a few feet away, I just needed to climb up the drawers of a closet that stood near me. As it turned out it wasn’t just an opening - it was a ventilation shaft. I crawled forward for I don’t know how long, but when I finally got out I was suddenly standing on a ledge. It was a narrow wooden plank, that could’ve been a shelf if it wasn’t so high up, and it was covered in dust. While looking around for a way to climb back down to the floor I saw another opening, but it was much lower than mine. Then suddenly I realized what caught my attention in that vent, it was the movement. There was someone in there.
Then I saw more of this person, and she was… odd. She wasn’t like any of the other kids I saw here - dull colored, sad, hair usually short and greasy - but bright and radiating with energy and determination. I guess that was what ticked me off, she was too different, and usually in Nowhere different means danger. It felt like alarm bells were going of inside my head, and I knew - the only way to stop them would be to run.
Only later, when I managed to catch my breath, I started thinking about that girl. I thought about her braided hair, and her raincoat. It reminded me of the sun, or maybe a dandelion, a bright yellow stain on the wall. I thought about how warm it must be, something my own asylum rags could never compare to.
Have you ever thought about it? How everyone in there was always dressed so light? Imagine if there was a fire and you’d need to lead everyone outside. We’d freeze to death. Would you or the guards give us your jackets? Or would you rather stay warm yourself‘s while we suffer?
Although we had crossed paths many times during my time in the Mansion, I had never mustered up the courage to talk to her or even shout to her to ask for a name. Each and every one of our interactions consisted of my seeing her and running as fast as I could, in fear she would call for one of the creatures roaming those halls. I only found out her name closer to the end.
She had spoken to the mistress of the house - a small girl, dressed all in white, with clean, tight curls in her hair (you see now, Otto, why unusual is a bad omen in here? Of course you don’t. I had asked too soon) - and had told her the name to call her. I thought I would faint when I heard it. I couldn’t believe it. The one who is the reason for my imprisonment in this realm and is the cause for all my suffering, is standing there, talking to one of the creatures, like it’s any other day.
I had decided to run, but it had turned out to be my fatal mistake…
At that moment I wished I hadn’t ran when I first saw her.
She helped me, and I tried to help her.
But I didn’t know the cliff would crumble under her feet.
