“oh?” ariel questioned, unsure what to really think of that. because it had seemed like serena had been fairly happy during her relationship with eric - or at least they had always assumed she was, especially with the way she still seemed to be around him as often as she could be. “maybe you should be with someone else instead then. someone who does make you actually happy?” @serenariverr

raising their shoulders in a shrug, ariel just grinned at him as they moved to sit in the library seat across from his own. “i figured you’d probably be here or hiding away in your lab,” they begin to explain as they lean against the table and rest their head in their hands. “and i may or may not have been checking every floor until i got to this one. which i wouldn’t have had to do, you know, if you would have just answered my texts.” over the past few weeks things had been... different between them and ariel really couldn’t figure out why that could possibly be. classes had started back up so they’d given him some time to adjust to that and thought maybe that must be it - but when it lasted longer than just the first few days of school restarting they knew it had to be something deeper. @dexboigenius

It wasn’t really Ariel’s job to interact with the aquarium goers too often. They were mostly supposed to stick to helping take care of the fish and keep the behind the scenes areas neat and tidy. But that didn’t stop them from going out to see who all was around and talk with some of them from time to time. “Do you have a favorite?” they ask as they approach the boy standing in front of one of the tanks, looking between the fish and him with a smile. @ronstoppablc
it was probably only halfway through the night, if not a little more, and shaggy had decided the crowds and the noise were too much. it took a bit to get him here, but that mixed with the feeling of not belonging in a crowd like this was enough to get him outside, lighting up, and trying to pretend he was a lot more confident than he was. the fresh air was enough to make him breathe, but smoking was the only thing that seemed to really get his hands to stop shaking. he knew anyone could walk in on him and he sort of expected people to. he was never the type to turn down sharing his shit, so when the first person arrived, he gave a smile. and then one turned into two and shaggy had decided this was going to be his little squad for the moment. “are we all here for the same reason? cause like, that would check out with the way we all look, am i right?” @littletriton @invisoviolet
feeling like they were practically rushing towards the door, ariel just needed to get away for a moment. this was not how the night was supposed to go. when they first saw eric leaving the ballroom with someone else, they hadn’t really thought much of it - assuming he was probably getting some air with a friend. but then the realization that the two were taking the main exit and not just going out into one of the gardens hit and they knew they were being ditched. a glass of champagne had been downed in the moment and for awhile they were able to keep a smile and continue on - until one of their sisters asked what happened to their date and it all became too much for them. which was what had led ariel to flee for the backdoors. originally in hopes of being alone, they paused when they saw someone had already claimed the spot and was about to walk away when another person followed out through the other set of doors a few feet away. before ariel could think of a polite way to excuse themself, the boy was speaking to the two newcomers. “uhhh. i don’t know. why are you out here?” they asked in return, unsure really how to answer but feeling like they couldn’t just run off now. closing the doors they’d just burst out of, ariel moves to come stand beside the stranger and looks over at the girl as well. @invisoviolet

truthfully, eric was not excited about tonight. masquerade balls sounded grand and beautiful, but in theory they were boring and honestly not the best way to ring in the new year. throw in the fact that his father would be in attendance and his desire to be here was thinning by the second. coming with ariel helped though, at least a little. he could always count on them to keep the laughs flowing and a smile on his face, so was the nature of their friendship — easy and chill. and the last thing he needed was for something to complicate that. “probably a mix of both no lie.” eric answers with a little laugh. he’s sure people like his father would think very little of the kinds of people who spent their night at the bar at these events, but eric can’t imagine getting through it any other way. “but, honestly you’re gonna need a drink so fuck what anyone else thinks. you have any idea what you want?” he asks, already leading them towards the bar.
it’s no surprise when even after eric admits it’s both trashy and impolite to grab a drink so early on in the night he still decides it’s something they should do anyway. and with sebastian off for the night with their father currently nowhere to be found, ariel had no reason to object or really worry about how they might look or appear to others. besides as the two of them approached the bar there was clearly already a small line forming, so at least it’s not like they’re the only ones. “i don’t know. i usually just get whatever the person in front of me orders because i can never tell what will be good. do you think we should go for a classic first or try one of the specialties for the night?”
entering the party with their arm linked through eric’s, ariel stops for a moment in their tracks to look around the entire ballroom. “is it impolite or trashy to hit up the bar so early?” they ask him, not knowing exactly what the protocol was regarding alcohol at events like these considering this was the first one they could legally drink at. but they felt like a drink was needed as quickly as possible. because to say that things had been weird between themself and eric lately would be an understatement. or at least, in ariel’s eyes it would be. in reality nothing that really changed between them since the kiss they’d shared under the mistletoe at his party - but that was exactly why ariel believed things to be so strange. they’d kissed!! and eric was acting exactly the same as he always used to around them - their date for the masquerade ball still on and not a word had been said about how this could be more than just friends going together like always. it was frustrating to say the least, but so far ariel has been content to let eric take the lead. that all changed tonight though, for ariel was determined that if he didn’t say something then they would. not so early into the night, of course, not wanting to potentially ruin the masquerade for either of them - but by midnight something would be said. @ohcapitans

Rapunzel’s fingers toyed with the pendant around her neck –it’d been a Christmas present from her parents, and thought the large stone wasn’t necessarily her style, she didn’t have the heart to tell them she disliked it, especially considering it was only their third Christmas together. The blonde was grateful that they’d thought of her and was just about finished regaling her tale to the other. “Anyways, how was your holiday?”
“At least it’s pretty,” they offer as they look at the necklace around the princess’s neck once more. It certainly wasn’t anything Ariel would have considered to be Rapunzel’s style, but hey at least an attempt at getting something had been made. With how busy the King and Queen must be the fact that they stopped to try to find something for their daughter in general meant a lot as far as Ariel was concerned. It was the same logic they used whenever their father got them a gift that wasn’t exactly anything they really wanted. “It was good! It was... nice to have a little bit of a break and just focus on family for a few nights.” Especially after everything that went down the last time they had gone out to be with friends instead - the mistletoe kiss with Eric still fresh in their head and refusing to leave their thoughts any time soon.

it was probably a bad idea - the amount of alcohol ariel has already consumed this night, as well as just being at the party in general. but they didn’t care. they were twenty-one now, after all. they had a right to go hang out with friends for the holidays regardless of whether or not their father agreed. which was what had drove them to sneak out and attend eric’s party in the first place, as well as what kept them there far longer than they normally would stay. it also didn’t help that so many people were using this as an excuse to also celebrate ariel’s recent birthday - offering to do shot after shot with them until ariel was well passed the usual level of tipsy they normally tried to stay at during parties, tipping over into being fairly drunk.
which was what led them to this moment. not that ariel planned it. but as they found themself right under the mistletoe hung up on the wall with eric standing directly across from them, seemingly unaware what was going on, it was the alcohol in their system that gave ariel the courage to actually do something for once. logic and reason were out the window, no thoughts of missy or any other of his exes in their head - dexter completely forgotten in the moment. all they could focus on was the way this could be it.
reaching out to place their hands on eric’s shoulder, they took another step closer towards him and gave him a small little smile. “i’m going to kiss you,” they warn, though they don’t really give him much time to react before lifting up on their feet and pressing their lips to his. not with any pressure or expectations, just simply for once following exactly what their heart told them to do. @ohcapitans

Taking the gift out of his hands, Ariel beams at him in appreciation. “You didn’t have to get me anything you know,” they say, truly meaning it and even feeling a little guilty for not having a gift to give him in return right now. Though that was something they would rectify right away once Stitch was gone. Ideas were already flowing through their head at what they could potentially get the boy. “Should I open it now or wait ‘till we’re closer to the holidays?”
This is really corny…but you’re already a gift to me.” (Eric)
Their head dips down in an attempt to hide their face so Eric wouldn’t see just how pleased they were to hear those words. It was moments like this that kept Ariel from ever being able to truly move on from her feelings for the boy. Every time they think maybe they should just let go, he turns around and says something like that or just... acts like his general sweet self. It’s enough to make the butterflies in their stomach come alive and keep Ariel’s crush going strong. But that’s not something they can let him know, not when they saw the way he acted around Missy. So like always, they played everything off as not being a big deal - acted as if his words didn’t tug on their heart each and every single time. “Oh stop being so gushy and just open the present! And it’s not tableware, I promise.” @ohcapitans

“Are those things real?” Wendy asks, looking around. She couldn’t see any but she’d definitely heard of them before. “If we can get our hands on a couple of them, I wouldn’t say no to the help.” She admitted to Ariel with a smile. They had a point, if they both had one, it wouldn’t be that bad. “And we can be the best ones out of the kids using them,” Wendy added with a laugh.
“I think so,” they said confidently, despite having no real clue themselves. “We can at least ask! I bet they give them out at the little booth you pick up skates in. Come on!” Instinctively Ariel goes to reach for the girl’s hand but stops before they can get too far, remembering Dexter’s reaction the first time they tried to hold his hand and the way he always said to never assume people would be okay with that. So instead they let their arm fall back down and just grin at Wendy before starting to walk over towards the rental area.

“Ariel, what a lovely name.” Wendy said, taking their hand and shaking it in greeting. “And I do hope you’re right but the wall is there for a reason - mostly to hold onto.” That was her brilliant plan. If things were looking bad, she could always grab it and pull herself along. “If we stick together, maybe we’ll beat all the odds and we won’t fall at all.” Unlikely but she could hope. In all likelihood, they’d stick together, one of them would fall and bring the other down with them.
“Thank you! So is Wendy,” they return the compliment honestly before giggling a bit at her comment regarding skating near the wall. “That’s true. Or we could get the little walkers they make to help kids with. If we both have them it won’t seem as embarrassing.” If those things were actually real - Ariel had only seen them in movies before, but they assumed there had to be some kind help for beginners other than just the suggestion of staying close to the wall.

“Never?” Wendy repeated, elated she’d found someone who might have the same experience as she had. “I believe I’ve skated about two times in my life, ever. One of them being when I was about five years old so that hardly counts. And the other was a few years ago back in London but it was a poor showing. I feel down at least twenty times, maybe I should just - sorry, I’m rambling aren’t I?” A rather bad habit of hers when she was nervous and meeting someone new tended to fall into that category. “I’m Wendy, by the way.”
“Nope,” they answered with a small shrug. Skating had never been anything on their radar really, but now standing outside of the Ice Palace with free admission and a potential new friend to be made from it all - it felt like a perfect time to give it a try. “No, it’s okay. I don’t mind rambling. And don’t worry - I’m sure even if you fell down a lot last time you’ll be better than I will be.” Grinning, without hesitation Ariel holds out a hand as they introduce themself as well. “I’m Ariel!”
After Rapunzel’s disappearing act on Halloween, it’d taken the princess a lot of convincing to get her parents to allow her to attend the Winter Festival without several guards tailing her every move. She understood their concern, but ice skating and sleigh rides didn’t seem all that fun with constant supervision. Luckily, they’d come to an agreement –only one guard and they’d keep a respectable distance, so long as she allowed them to look up her location on their phone. “I’ve been looking forwards to this all year,” Rapunzel murmured, her eyes darting between the various attractions and booths. “I don’t even know where to start.”
Linking their arms through Rapunzel’s, Ariel glanced back quickly at the guard they knew was tailing the blonde. It was instinctual to them to want to ditch the babysitter, but they knew that likely wouldn’t go over well for Rapunzel. Mr. Triton was used to his child running off on their own by now and though he disliked it, it wasn’t anything surprising at this point. But the King and Queen? That’s a different story. So Ariel bit their tongue and held back the suggestion of sneaking away as their first activity. “We should do something fun! Have you decorated the cookies yet? Or we could just explore a bit! I still need to buy presents for all my sisters, we could do some shopping?”

Though Wendy was not that great at ice skating but there was no time like the present to practice. Plus, she was hoping everyone’s general holiday spirit would forgive her for how bad she was. A voice pulled her out of her thoughts and she turned to the person standing right behind her with a smile. “Oh, I’m not really sure. I can’t remember if the sign said anything about it.” The sign had said something about free skating all night but she didn’t remember if there was any mention of a show - that would have been nice. “I am, is it sad I’m going by myself?” She knew Tink would have thought so but she hadn’t wanted to embarrass herself terribly in front of her friends. “I’d love to! As long as you don’t mind skating with a beginner.”
They hadn’t necessarily expected the girl to have an answer to their question, but figured it didn’t hurt to try asking anyway. Oh well. If it hadn’t been advertised there likely wouldn’t be a show. Which was a little disappointing, but Ariel was quick to get over it. Especially once the stranger said she’d love to skate with them. “It’s not sad! I’m by myself too,” they answered with a small shrug - thought their solitude was mostly due to the fact that Flounder had decided to stay home and they’d yet to find any of their other friends. But that didn’t bother Ariel, they were more than happy to enjoy some time alone, or with a potential new friend - which was even better. “That’s okay! I’m a beginner too. I’ve actually never skated before. Like ever.”
