The Cast of To Be A Supernova: Visual reference VS Their Adult Character Design Counterparts.
In my Longfic trilogy universe, everyone is fifteen years older than they were during the original Pokémon. The goal was to capture the essence of the characters but design them in a new way that suited their personalities and roles in the story, and put them in their outfits as described in the book. I think @lara-verse nailed it!

It's time to meet the gorgeous men of the To Be A Supernova universe.
I commissioned a 12 piece cast character design set for my Pokémon fanfic To Be A Supernova. We have met all the women, and now it's time to meet all of the men. This is Trevor's design.
Trevor Vanderbilt. 25 years old, the department head of Photography at KERA, and Serena's exclusive editorial photographer. Trevor is refined, charming, and delightfully aesthetic when it comes to all facets of his life. Here is his introduction in Chapter 1 of To Be A Supernova.
-- Serena hadn’t seen Marianne around, so she figured she would duck up to the Photography Studios. She wandered down the hallways past the various empty portrait setups, portfolio rooms and collaborative areas to find Marianne staring up at a massive photo of a shiny Litleo sunbathing in the Poké Pelago. A warm hand landed on her shoulder as a gorgeous man with diamond grey eyes, long flaming hair and a sage green tailored suit beamed towards her. She nodded with approval before he walked up and stood beside Marianne.
“I see you’ve found a personal favourite in my shining stars collection… Hello! I’m Monsieur Trevor Vanderbilt, the department head of the Photography Studio.”
“Oh, Trevor, my goodness!” Marianne gushed with excitement, “I… I am a massive fan of your work! My husband has 3 pieces from your Safari Zone collection in his grand salon.”
Serena observed as Trevor delighted Marianne with immense wit and charm, seeing her slip straight back into her thirsty trance.
Trevor and Serena originally met as kids. When she became Kalos Queen, he took a photo of her mid-competition that was so beautiful that she asked if he would work for her as her personal editorial photographer, and the rest was history. For Serena, there was no other suitable candidate to take the helm of the Photography Studios other than Trevor, as no one could capture the raw, sparkling essence of a person or Pokémon quite like he could.
“Serena darling!” Trevor called out, approaching her as if she were a brand new addition to the room, “I am going to steal this divine woman off your hands if you don’t mind. The studio is nice and quiet today as the students are all out on their final assessment fieldwork, so I’d love to have a chance to get to know Marianne and see how we can help her little ones with their futures...” --
I wanted to create designs that weren't in the exact same style as the anime, but that utilised all the bones of the characters such as their hair colour, eye colour, and using their overall colour schemes in their clothing. I also had one condition for my artist: everyone had to be HOT in their own ways. I find Trevor so damn pretty. I wanted a very pretty, feminine man in the group, and he just... swoon! Not that I'm remotely his type, but still! Haha
It's been really fun to work with an artist and collaborate on every stage of the process. We now just have Tierno, Clemont and Sawyer left to go (and maybe one more a little down the line hehehe).

To Be A Supernova, my super niche, left of field Pokémon story about Serena's sexual reclamation and grieving journey set in the Pokémon academy Serena co-founded in Kalos is 23 chapters in with 17 chapters to go, and as of right now, it has officially hit 150 comments.
Over and over in the comments I've had people tell me that exploring Serena through the lens of repressed sexuality due to a range of trauma and societal shame has given them room for pause and made them root for her happiness. Others have really resonated with the journey of her grief. Some have enjoyed the friendships, some the world building, and some have found that the lemon has really hit the spot. Sure, a huge amount of these comments are me responding and engaging with my readers in conversations, but still, 150! I'm so stoked.
I didn't expect anyone to really get this story but me. I wasn't even originally going to publish it anywhere. I'm glad I did. So here's to releasing 17 more chapters, plus two more novels, and to every single person who takes the time to comment on my chapters! Thankyou <3
one thing I will never understand about legends za is why they didn’t add rotom phone customization.
it’s literally the customization game?? what do you mean we can’t have fun designs with our phone?? why did you take it away when it worked out just fine in sv. what was the point of taking it away??
And so many npcs have their rotom phones customized as well. you think with how much we use it to start ZA royale battles, we would have it but nope
Chapter 15 of To Be A Supernova has dropped today, and it’s one of my personal favourites. This chapter is titled Plum Silk Pyjamas.
I am fully aware that I have thrown quite a few curveballs and written a very unconventional Pokémon fanfic by focusing predominantly on Serena’s sexual reclamation and grieving/healing journey around her dynamic with Ash. But I stand by my choices, particularly this one.
This chapter deep dives into the dynamic between Serena and her secret lover. How they came to be, what appealed to Serena about the unconventional elements of their pairing, what they are like together between sessions (their chemistry is crazy!), how Serena’s flirty, sexual side comes out around him, and where their journey is now heading as they take on a really intense challenge together in the bedroom.
What I love so much about this dynamic is that it is a very healthy portrayal of what friends with benefits can look like when the two people involved actually respect and platonically love each other. Serena may have a secret lover, but her heart only has space right now for Ash, and this boundary is well and truly set between the pair of them. Still, there is a deep care on both sides, especially given how long their dynamic has gone on for and how it has shifted and flowed over the years from a friendship point of view.
It is also the absolute gold standard for sexual communication, especially around preparing partners and setting up safe sexual environments to explore and push boundaries. I read a lot of lemon, and these conversations are kind of missed. I’m not sure whether it's because it is deemed boring or the writers coming up with these scenarios haven’t practised them in person, but I think it’s important to show a healthy, good representation of a dynamic that does push boundaries and explore things in the bedroom but does so with safeguards in place and communicated in advance. Plus, these kinds of moments are NEVER remotely shown in the visual medium of lemonography, and it often leads to misrepresentation of the reality of all different sorts of bedroom dynamics.
Sex starts with communication. I wanted to display that, and I wanted to give Serena a significant moment of triumph, especially given the amount of trauma and shame she has experienced around her sexuality. This chapter may send my amourshipper readers into a depressive state, but I hope that they can see Serena as the wonderful protagonist that she is. This is her story. She isn’t solely an extension of Ash through shipping. She has her own dreams, thoughts and experiences and is on a really important journey. I think when it comes to shipping in any genre or fandom, this nuance is sometimes lost when it comes to the female characters involved in popular ships.
Either way, I’m really proud of this chapter, and I hope that it gives my readers some clarity around the pairing as well as a chance to look back at some of the very “hidden in plain sight” subtext that I’ve laced this dynamic with throughout the story so far.

Absolutely delighted with the official cover of To Be A Supernova, created by @lara-verse! The cover captures a range of items and themes in the book that reveal themselves with time. Serena is as gorgeous as ever at 25, but boy has she had to go through it to get to where she is, and she has a long way to go before she is freed of her ghosts!
Lara and I are working on 12 character profiles. Yes, 12! We're ageing everyone up in some really unique, dynamic ways (everyone is hot in in my version of the Pokémon world because why not!) that give a whole new life to the characters and world I have created. Chapter 3 of To Be A Supernova is out! Serena's favourite person in the entire world is introduced and it's probably not someone you would expect! But boy do they have a beautiful dynamic together. We finally get to see Serena be her authentic self, which results is some very dark humour, some grizzling, and a deep, difficult admission on the exposé's impact on her shame around her sexuality, and how having people only view her through that lens has significant impacts on her self worth and her ability to connect with others. I really wanted to show the difference between Serena performing emotions versus actually being overwhelmed by emotions.
Chapter 2 of To Be A Supernova is out. Loved really cementing the world-building with the introduction of Ash as the Lost Monarch, the exposé that blew up Serena's life, and digging into just how incredibly Serena harnesses her performing prowess to manipulate others without them remotely grasping what she’s doing. It’s just such a shame that it comes at such a mental cost, having to deflect and endure being so openly up for sexual dissection at all times. My poor girl doesn't deserve such cruelty. Alas, she's the best performer in the world, and she runs the best non-battling Pokemon academy for a reason. She's one hell of a tough cookie and can eat these insufferable investors up for breakfast whilst barely breaking a sweat.

Serena D’Amour was a woman of many labels. She was a history maker. The managing co-founder of the finest non-battling academy to exist. And unfortunately, she was also a sexually disgusting degenerate who was the last person to see the beloved Lost Monarch before his disappearance during the Season of Suffering.
So of course, one week before the 6th anniversary of the world-changing reality rift that caused the Season of Suffering, Serena finds herself yet again haunted by the ghost of the Lost Monarch, who today has chosen to torment her through the lips of a wealthy investor. Even her girlfriends at girls’ night cannot resist when a slip of words from their new squad member gives them the chance to pry.
Drunk and exhausted, Serena loses control of her curated persona, opening up to her girlfriends about the impact of her existence being reduced to the penetrative whims of the Lost Monarch.
In this moment of vulnerability, his ghost subtly softens, as Serena now finds herself blazing down a pathway of sexual reclamation and emotional evolution as she attempts to remove the Lost Monarch out of her heart so that she can move on and have the chance to fall in love with somebody else.

a feel like the new generation of fanfic readers NEED to understand that clicking on a fic (interaction) does nothing. ao3 has no algorithm. your private discord discussions of fic do not reach the authors. if you do not actively engage with writers they will stop posting. this isn’t social media this is community.
While I would never stop writing or take fics down because I don't get much interaction, it's true. Hits don't mean anything apart from "this fic has been opened so and so many times." They don't tell me whether someone read the whole story, only read part of it, or maybe only clicked on it accidentally. They don't tell me what readers thought of it.
Kudos are nice; they tell me that the reader read the story and at least liked it a bit.
But comments are THE BEST. Even if they just consist of a single heart or a few words expressing the reader's reaction to the fic. My favorites are questions, quotes/mentions of favorite parts, speculation, gibberish in reply to smutty scenes... Once or twice, even a respectfully worded [emphasis on "respectfully worded" here] critical comment led to a really fun in-depth conversation in the comments. I also share some of my references and research in the end notes of many fics because readers have told me that they enjoyed me doing that. It's a mutual give and take between writer and reader when readers actively participate.
TL;DR: While I absolutely write fic mostly for myself, the interaction with readers through comments in particular is what makes posting fics so much fun!
And I know I don't always comment - sometimes I'm just too tired to come up with words. But leave kudos, at least. And it's never too late to come back later and leave a comment then. No writer I know thinks it's weird when someone leaves a comment on an older fic of theirs - quite the opposite.
Like the above comment said, the 'hits' count doesn't mean anything!!!! AO3 registers a 'hit' anytime someone clicks into fic. That's it.
Everytime I hear about people only reading fics with the biggest 'hit' count, I want to scream.
A fic with 20,000 hits isn't automatically going to be a better read than a fic with 100 hits. And as a reader, if you only filter by most hits, you are going to miss out on SO SO SO many amazing, life-changing, fics.
Not to mention, in most cases if you filtered fics with the most hits, then filtered fics with most comments they will not be the same results.
Comments mean people read the fic and enjoyed it!!! If you're going to filter by stats (I still do not condone this at all), AT LEAST look at the number of comments over the hit count. A healthy comment section makes a fic even more enjoyable, because after each chapter you can have chats with other people, including the author!
Remember, YOU CAN'T BUILD COMMUNITY WITHOUT COMMENTS.
I don't think any amount of these PSAs from writers will ever alieviate the FOMO that leads readers to care about hit counts over actual quality of a fic. But I'm still going to bang my pots and pans together anyway 🫡
Serena is a character that I can never separate from the romantic elements of her character, it’s not her only character trait, far from, but it’s very notable.
Because a lot of her personality in pokemas is clearly taking some pointers from the anime and her crush on ash wasn’t just for the sake of shipping, it was a fundamental stepping stone to her growth as a person, to her standing up to her mother, to her growth in confidence and willingness to chase her dreams. Even if the love she feels for him may always remain one sided, she’s made peace with that and still thinks on him fondly as the experience that turned her into the person she is today.
Serena is a beautiful character in every media counterpart she has, manga, games, anime, spinoff, she’s treated with a lot of care and its disheartening to see her boiled down to being an ash crazed fangirl when she’s one of the most realistic female leads I think we’ve ever had.
And this does effect her game counterpart, while game and anime Serena are different people, shipping culture will follow her, and she got a Valentine’s Day suit in pokemas for a reason.
She will always be a hopeless romantic in my mind, not hopeless because she can’t get anyone to like her, but hopeless because she is out of everyone’s league and she’s frankly- high maintenance. Her standards are high and she wants everything to be as magical as she dreamed it to be.
Void
Theres walls on the virtual world that create bubbles, pockets of isolation. You feel connected, but you aren’t. You try to reach out, and everyone can hear you whilst no one car hear you. Always in the void, trying to reach out, only to find data dust and blank spaces.

Just rewatching the entire series, and it’s dawned on me that this quote is actually from the very first two episodes, and is reused at the end. It is such a phenomenal monologue. Holy moly this show is just incredible.
What an amazing weekend. My highlight was meeting this phenomenal woman, @carren_smith. Before the wellness couch summit I didn't know who Carren was, you may not either. In a very brief summary, Carren has been through the ringer. After losing her partner to suicide and considering suicide herself as her only alternative to coping with the loss, she went on a girls trip with 2 friends only to be blown up in the Bali bombings, her face and top of her head crush and blown off, and both her friends killed in the process. Yet she had taken that loss, grief and pain and found spiritual and emotional enlightenment beyond emotions and thoughts. I was in awe and felt emotionally kicked in the face and had to hold back my tears but not from a perspective of sadness, but one of enlightenment.
