Okay so I’ve been hit with a bit of the bitchcat brainrot again, and I’d been meaning to make a aorta-summary of the version of his Warrior of Light timeline that includes my friend’s purple bun. Especially since I keep making images with the two of them with no context (I do have plans for gpose comic things to show off bits of their timeline, but they’re gonna take a looooong time to do, especially some of the loredump-y ones). I’ve also ‘translated’ XIV lore shit in a way my sims folks should be able to read it too 💖(Though, anyone who doesn’t wanna be spoiled by some skeleton descriptions of MSQ story beats, probably don’t read it)
The shortest loredump (it’s still 1.4k words I’m sorry) I could manage for them that gives context to why their tag is 'emotional damage bfs':
Dhani is/was part of a doomsday cult of eldritch abominations that are the source of ALL Tetsuke’s problems through the main story (and in general the world’s problems). He was basically the punching bag of almost all the others due to some...very unfortunate circumstances of birth. He volunteered to follow Tetsuke and keep an eye on him after Tetsuke started to ‘become a potential complication’ - but it was really an excuse for Dhani to be away from the rest for an indeterminate amount of time.
It did not take Dhani long to completely lose the plot even though Tetsuke was...not pleasant towards him for a while (again, member of the cult that caused his life to go to shit). But Tetsuke’s max-actual-asshole stemmed from a load of misdirected grief and anger, not because of some immutable trait Dhani couldn’t change; and also somehow his maximum-dickbag was, at worst, still only ‘mild’ compared to how Dhani was treated by his supposed peers.
Sooooo...he started finding loopholes to work around the sorta...light brainwashing? Geas, maybe? That acts as a leash to keep his apocalypse cult in-line, and starts helping Tetsuke out where he can. And weaponizing the characteristic manipulation tactics his own ‘co-workers’ taught him to upkeep a veneer of plausible deniability so they couldn’t tell he was doing it (it helped they didn’t believe he’d ever be brave enough to do such a thing).
By about the halfway point of the story, Tetsuke starts both voluntarily giving him things to do to ‘test’ at just how much of his want to help is real, as well as handing him easier ways to upkeep cover stories in case he actually is being an ally - for example: if Dhani were to be in a room invisible to anyone but him, and any of the rest of the cast of characters started to discuss anything that could be weaponized against them, Tetsuke would literally pick him up, fireman carry him to the door, plonk him down while telling him some shit like ‘okay visiting hours are over time to go’ and shutting the door in his face. This way, if he WASN’T trustworthy, he got no info. But if he was genuine in his desire to help, and his ‘co-workers’ did anything to probe the veracity of the claim that was the equivalent of ‘no really, he kicked me out’, they would find it was true – lending credence to the idea he wasn’t becoming a double agent nope not at all!
Tetsuke entrusted a lot more to him while he was spirited away to a ‘parallel world’ - he was able to travel back and forth freely, but he was a little busy taking care of their ‘problems’ to make sure those ‘problems’ didn’t destroy his own world...and also to beat the hell out of Emet-Selch (which really was motivation enough on its own).
Since he was also interacting with Dhani on more friendly-ish terms, his brief trips back home are when he started to learn more of his circumstances, and his time spent on the other side usually had him learning more about the ‘doomsday cult’ that really helped contextualize things about all members of it (including becoming aware of the ‘geas’ that kept all of them ‘in check’ – some willingly, some...less so). Once Tetsuke managed to get himself and his friends (who’d been trapped in the parallel world) back home, he’d come to at least have some trust in Dhani, due to both his help keeping people safe while Tetsuke was otherwise occupied, but also just from being armed with more information about Dhani.
The fact that Tetsuke had also just killed the last of the three ‘leaders’ that kept the cult-group on task probably also helped. Just a bit.
Probably the first truly risky test of trusting him was Tetsuke sending Dhani to slow down the asshole that bodyjacked him (not an exaggeration, and don’t talk to me about how the game just pretends it never happens after the questline ends because I have SO many Hot Takes™ about In From The Cold) while Tetsuke determinator’d his way towards them while trapped in the corpse of some rando soldier.
He had to tell Dhani at least a couple of his former injuries that were ways to slow him down outside of usual ‘self-defense’ strike points, because he also told him in no uncertain terms not to fight Zenos unless he wanted to die instantaneously. While they weren’t the worst healed-but-sensitive injuries, it was still dangerous information to share – and under normal circumstances, he likely wouldn’t have, but his options had been...well, none, really, so he took the risk of relying on the only person who could reach him (doomsday cult members can ‘sense’ your soul, so Dhani would have seen his body that wasn’t him, then panic found actual-him and teleported to him).
That, plus Tetsuke also happening to kill the cult god that held the geas-like influence over his followers, gained Dhani a whole lot of trust – not fully, but enough that Tetsuke didn’t worry about him ‘overhearing meetings’ anymore.
(for the benefit of XIV folks: yes I know killing a primal doesn’t stop someone being tempered, but Zodiark’s tempering is way less heavy-handed than that of ‘normal primals’ considering all the ascians very much still have a sense of self and all that – friend and I figured that even if not ‘gone’ Zodiark’s death would at least make it dormant)
Tetsuke had learned the basics of why Dhani was abused by his ‘peers’ previously, but he really got the full context when he was sent back into their civilization briefly (which was like...over a dozen millennia before Tetsuke was even born). Dhani was a result of his mother having ‘relations’ with her familiar – who, even if he was one that had a soul (and thus human-like intelligence/awareness), would still kinda be like the equivalent of someone birthing offspring from their pet who’s also their servant. So...a bit disgusting, on multiple levels. And they decided that Dhani deserved to be punished for his mother’s actions, too (though Tetsuke didn’t get to actually see an example of that...not yet).
What trust there was left to bridge with Tetsuke, Dhani surpassed the ‘requirements’ when he sacrificed himself to try and make sure Tetsuke would make it to ‘the end’. During the final push towards stopping the thing causing universal entropy/the literal embodiment of nihilism, Dhani destroyed the thing that allowed him to be essentially immortal, and was subsequently killed and scattered into the surrounding area. He did it in place of the Leveilleur twins, aware of Tetsuke’s distress at the time from even the implication that they’d have to die for him to keep moving (all the other Scions had already sacrificed themselves in the same manner to get them that far).
When Tetsuke was given his opportunity to recreate everyone’s physical body (thus ‘bringing them back to life’ – their aether/souls had all still been there, but with their physical bodies destroyed, they were still functionally dead until they had new ones), Tetsuke brought Dhani back as well. He definitely didn’t expect it, and the surprise was especially amplified by the fact that his new body was an actual one – having existed as an incorporeal being that simply possessed ‘unoccupied’ bodies tended to dull all sensations and emotions, so it was definitely a lot for Dhani. Especially when immediately after, Tetsuke sent all of them away - to save the lives he’d just restored to all of them and could not do again because the magic he’d use was a one-time trick - while he ‘solved the problem’ on his own. Which he then almost died doing – or rather, literally did die for at least a few minutes – thanks to the extra ‘problem’ he’d had to take care of and didn’t account for.
Honestly everything after that can be summarized by ‘Dhani tries not to die while adjusting to having an actual physical body’ and ‘Tetsuke tries to resist his overprotective tendencies, fails miserably’ and also ‘Tetsuke realizes Dhani is his ‘type’ at some point, proceeds to avoid and self-sabotage and generally make an idiot out of himself before finally pulling his head out of his ass during the Vacation Arc™’, while Dhani is comically oblivious to both any flirting and what the physical tells of his own attraction are which is what caused having to wait for Tetsuke to get over himself in the first place’.
(Yes a lot more than that happened, but man this is too long already)
