We are people just like you

We are statistically more likely to be harmed than to do harm

Not all of us are overt, there’s a good chance you have talked to and maybe even been friends with a schizophrenic without knowing!

There’s more schizophrenia spectrum disorders than just schizophrenia, such as schizoaffective disorder or schizotypal personality disorder

“Schizo” is considered an offensive term by many schizophrenics and some even consider it a slur against us, if you aren’t schizospec yourself please try to avoid using it (as well as “psycho” for psychosis!)

Similarly, the recently common “quirky” online phrases “delulu”, “schizoposting”, “I’m so delusional” (without actually having a delusion), etc are also very offensive! We aren’t a joke!

Not all of us hallucinate or have delusions. There’s more symptoms than just those 2 and the schizophrenia diagnostic criteria doesn’t even necessarily require either of them to be present

We can sometimes know we’re having a delusion while still experiencing the delusion, it’s called double bookkeeping

We deserve rights and bodily autonomy (that includes to not be forcefully drugged and locked up without our consent!!!)

We have got to stop framing our oppression in ways that promote the idea that other people cannot relate to our struggles. Not only does it isolate comrades in the struggle, it actively diminishes recognition of other struggles--often including those even more horrific than what we are at risk of. And this happens especially between Gay and Black struggles.

"when have straight people ever had to check what states were safe for them?" Sundown towns are still a thing. Starlight tours. What states have abortion access? What states have open carry? What states have stand your ground? What states have 3-strike rules? Women, people of color, disabled people, immigrants, and more have had to be abundantly cautious where they travel to. Straight trans people have much more travel risk right now than gay cis people.

It's a new iteration of the same tired question: "imagine if straight people weren't allowed to marry" interracial marriage in the US is younger than my parents. We disgrace people of color by forgetting their history and contemporary struggles, and we abandon queer people of color, Black queer people, by segmenting their overlapping fights.

what “don’t encourage the delusion” means:

don’t argue with or challenge the delusion—attempting to disprove someone’s delusions is not helpful at all and will result in that person not trusting you

assure the delusional person that they are safe; be open and honest at all times

encourage them to verbalize their feelings and offer protection to prevent injury to themselves or, possibly, others

start building a trusting relationship with them rather than acting on a desire to control their symptoms

do not confirm or feed into the delusion by asking questions about it when the person is not experiencing a psychotic episode

what it does not mean:

insisting to a psychotic person experiencing psychosis that what they’re experiencing isn’t real

I don’t mean to trivialize psychosis by making a weird comparison, but this guide also serves as a handy checklist for helping someone through a bad drug trip. In both cases your number one priority is to get the person through whatever they’re dealing with unharmed.

i don’t think it’s trivializing at all, nor a weird comparison—as a psychotic person who has had psychotic episodes inadvertently triggered by drug use and/or worsened while trying to self-medicate with drugs, i think this is an important addition.

What this boils down to is having compassion for someone whose perception of reality is altered. Telling someone what they’re experiencing isn’t real when that is the experience they are having right now is utterly useless. When you don’t know who or what to trust, having a safe person to help tether you helps a lot.

Psychosis is terrifying. Anything that distorts your perception (hallucinations, delusions, cognitive deficits, drug effects) and makes you feel distrustful (paranoia is common in all of these) increases your stress and fear. So as a safe person, you want to reduce that stress and fear, and create a space where the person can ride out what they’re experiencing instead of exacerbating it.

Don’t “correct” the person; you are listening to THEIR CURRENT PERCEPTION, and facts aren’t relevant to that. Be compassionate without affirming the delusion. Validate the emotions, not the delusion: “That sounds really scary/upsetting/etc.” If you believed what they currently believe, you’d be scared/upset. Compassion validates that their feelings are real without reinforcing the delusional belief. This is vital.

Sometimes, when I’m in an episode and especially near the beginning, it helps just being able to talk about what I’m experiencing without judgement and especially being able to vent my feelings of frustration, fear, paranoia, and general wariness of the world and whether anything is real if I can’t trust my senses. Knowing my spouse will not have me locked up for my mental illness and will listen and empathize and offer support helps.

There have been times we have driven around for hours, and I get the aux and just play whatever I feel like, and we observe things we pass through the windows, a form of shared reality-building that is soothing to me because I like riding in the car. Yeah, I’m still having an episode, but it reduces stress and fear, so I don’t get stuck there.

A safe person makes a HUGE difference for someone who is experiencing psychosis. Truly.

BREAKING: out of desperation, Luigi Mangione's state prosecutor Joel Seidemann told federal authorities he would oppose any plea deal in the federal case as it could result in Joel's case being dropped due to protections against double jeopardy and Joel wants the attention this case gives him.

Plea deal talks in the federal case did not happen, but in general, such deals save prosecution's time & (tax payers') money, while ensuring the justice is served-Joel opposes all this. Not that he has any power to tell federal authorities what to do.
