“ what did i..? ” the words fall out of her mouth before she even has time to consider them. what a stupid question. then, quieter, audibly annoyed, “ satak preserve me. ”

minister al trel levels her cold gaze on tarkin. between them lies another nameless petty officer, face down, though still breathing. cradling her right hand, she rubs at its knuckles mindlessly. on the black leather, a discernible smear of blood tarnishes their surface. yet still, after all these years, he has the audacity to use that tone— she wasn't a child. nor his misbehaving wife. it takes considerable willpower not to bite his head off with a cold, whatever i damn well please. she aims instead for some sense of professionalism, despite her overwhelming urge, lest he make one of the many faces she so very much loathes.

“ he isn't dead, if that's what you're asking, sir. ” the usage of the term does not beget any semblance of politeness. “ it isn't a crime to give a man what he is owed, is it? ”

ignoring her little quip tarkin's gaze follows the minister's as it falls to the petty officer lying haphazardly on the ground, the only give-away that he was alive being the slight rise and fall of his chest. for a bit the governor says nothing, gaze calculating as he watches her rub the knuckles on her hand, his expression neutral.

at her response he resists the urge to chastise her further, giving her a smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes. granted he had only come after the fact, and perhaps the pathetic man lying on the ground did deserve what came to him.

regardless, there were rules. rules and protocols for a reason that the grand moff had helped put into place. he does not touch on the topic, however, hands resting neatly behind his back, boot lightly kicking the petty officer in the side and earning a groan from him in response.

finally, a reply, his voice as cool and calm as ever. "no, minister, it is not. after all, justice comes in many different forms. perhaps, in this instance, it was well served." he looks down to her gloved hand again, watching as she favors it before his own reaches out in offering.

"may I?"
