Thinking of my post about what an actual mauling by dogs looks like and how we forget just how terrifying of a mid-sized predator dogs (in general) are until this happens and then we seek to blame superficial things like breed or training rather than understand that this is normal predatory behavior and that domestication was supposed to stop this.
A woman in South Carolina was mauled by a pack of three dogs and has lost both of her arms, part of her colon, part of her esophagus, part of her scalp, and may also lose at least one of her legs and some pieces of her trachea and skull. The dogs were consuming her as they tore pieces off of her. There is evidence that she tried to fight them off as long as she could until they got her onto the ground and pulled her into a ditch. A witness was able to scare the dogs off of her by firing his gun, at which point she was air-lifted to the hospital and has been in constant surgeries since as the doctors race to stop the spread of infection.
The dogs were owned by someone who reports that a few months earlier they had broken into his chicken coop and killed all of his chickens. They then also attacked a man who was hospitalized, and 11 of his dogs were voluntarily relinquished to animal control. The remainder were allowed to freely roam on his unfenced property without a leash, and despite knowing that his dogs had just nearly killed someone they were still uncontained and unrestricted when police rolled up to arrest him and take the dogs into custody. He apparently wanted to have the dogs destroyed but his girlfriend talked him out of it saying they just needed training. It’s worth noting that he’s also earned a rabies citation, meaning at least one of the dogs seized was not UTD on its rabies vaccinations.
I will reiterate that I do not care that two of the dogs in question were pit bulls. I think any individual dog that is responsible for a mauling like this, that are actively consuming human flesh, have zero place in our world. We domesticated dogs to prevent them from killing and eating us. There is no place in a domesticated species for this kind of behavior. The dogs ate her arms and her legs and her stomach and were tearing the flesh off of her skull and trying to rip her throat out and tbh if these dogs aren’t euthanized by the end of this court fiasco then I will have lost all hope for the general public and lawmakers having even a basic understanding of dog behavior.
All I want is to have dog treats that aren't crummy sincerely all of my pockets with dog treat crumbs in them
No I am not going to stop putting them in every single pocket I have actually
I see people talking about ziplocks but my problem is they get all crumpled and lost in my pockets so it makes my timing for rewards hot garbage and this is absolutely a me problem
What I’m hearing is that we need to design specific pants with dog-treat friendly pockets included
Yes it’s that serious
All my homies hate PETA.

"every dog breed should be allowed to come in every color" is a bad take and i'm tired of seeing it :/
certain colors in certain breeds are directly linked to traits that negatively impact either health or function or both. dilute individuals in many breeds develop alopecia. any hair loss and an increased risk of skin infection make it difficult (if not outright risky) for most dogs to perform their purpose, be it retrieving or herding or hunting or guarding. in breeds such as poodles and pulis, dogs that aren't solid black or brown have inherently softer coats, why is why they are commonly either breed separately, faulted, or DQ'd. retrievers won't dry quickly after swimming if their fur doesn't repel water, and herding dogs could get caught on vegetation and/or pick up debris that impedes their movement thus losing control over their flock or herd.
should more breeds include a wider variety of colors, especially breeds that lack genetic diversity? yeah, probably. idk if it's not a breed that i am involved in then that's not my call to make. but the idea that specific coat colors were excluded only because of aesthetic or superstition or whatever is just wrong most of the time. give breeders from the early 1900s and earlier some credit — just because they didn't have access to health testing doesn't mean that they didn't use the tools and information they DID have to create functional, healthy dogs. standards were written a certain way for a reason. before you get fired up about changing them, find out WHY they are the way they are in the first place.
The one I get frustrated with is ones that the color combos would not cause major issues, and have effectively split the breed population.
Cardigan Corgis are my particular interest, and while the rare long haired "fluffy" is fine to be DQd. I see how the fluffy low to the ground dog would be a magnet for debris that would impede their job managing livestock as a living fence.
However, there's no good reason as far as I can see that blue merles can only breed to black, and sable and brindle cannot. We already have brindle pointed blue merles, that's been perfectly accepted, but brindle merle and sable merle are not accepted. I could understand if it was previously to avoid cryptic merles and accidental double merles, but I feel like this could be avoided with DNA testing, and there were always black cryptic merles. Liver and red merle have also popped up in Cardis, but are not allowed because it means they have brown noses.
But even if it was about avoiding cryptic merles, brindle merles and sable merles definitely look like merles to me! As I understand, clear sable merles do appear cryptic and are this inadvisable, but not the case for shaded sable or brindle. Clear sable is relatively rare in cardis as far as I've seen.
Left is brindle merle, right is sable merle. If anything, the problem is that these two merles look too similar. (These are both show legal colors under UK rules, but convention is still that the only merle really allowed is blue merle, and you should only breed merles to black or tris [either tan or brindle points are okay])
Bonus liver and liver merle (red merle)
If these colors are banned because it's to avoid any potential hidden merles and accidental double merles resulting from breeding those dogs, I fully understand, but we now have the genetic tools to determine if a dog may carry the merle gene.
The same avoidance of mixing merle and sable happens in collies and shelties (though they lack brindle), so I can see how it started in these breeds to never breed sable to merle to not risk double merles. But technology could remove the danger of cryptic merles.
I’m in a breed with zero color breeding restrictions (chihuahuas), a breed with very strict breeding restrictions despite the other possible colors not being associated with health problems (swissies), and a breed with relatively lax color restrictions where the only DQ colors are either literally not possible in a purebred dog or are actively harmful (dobes).
I used to be of the same opinion- breeds with color families should loosen up and just let them breed together and who cares if the color ~isn’t right~ as long as the dog is healthy. A Dane breeder explained to me that for her breed, the different color families have been different for so long that you can see health and temperament differences between them. This is also a long-held opinion by lab people and why the stereotype is that the chocolate labs are much more hyper and hard to handle than the other colors. I don’t have any stakes in breeds with strict color families like this so I don’t know how true it is, but if it is true then I can see why people are a bit hesitant to start mixing the families together even though it would be better for diversity.
With chihuahuas, the biggest color split comes from breeders who will not touch merle with a 10 foot pole. Both because all the different allowed colors can “hide” merle and you can end up with accidental double merles- which as you said is negated by modern testing, and because while merles are accepted in standard a lot of breeders feel they are mixed breed dogs and that the color never existed in the breed. Merles are often larger and and with incorrect head type though there are champion merles out there. People will go to extreme lengths to avoid merles and this is part of why you primarily only see shades of red and black/tan in the ring.
And with dobes, a purebred doberman can only be solid color with tan points, so literally anything else beside albino is impossible in a purebred dog. Albinos are not healthy and come with a huge list of other health concerns so it makes sense why the breeding seems restrictive. However the remainder of the colors that do exist in purebred dogs- black, red, fawn, and blue- are free to interbreed among each other with only caution to avoid breeding dilute to dilute to prevent CDA (in AKC, UKC, CKC, and UDC- FCI and KC says no dilutes allowed which imo is stupid).
But Swissies are the only ones that I think have stupid color family rules, and I knoooooooooooow it’s because they’re ~a striking tricolor breed~ but also reds and blue/tans carry no known health problems so why not? Again modern genetic testing enables us to avoid producing them in the first place and it’s really not all that common to produce them anyway but out of all the color restrictions that do make sense I simply don’t understand why not allow these perfectly natural colors. Blues don’t seem to carry a strong association with CDA unlike in other breeds, possibly because no one is allowed to breed a blue and so there’s no “doubling up” on whatever it is that causes CDA in the first place, otherwise I’d make an allowance for the blue as the swissy is intended to have a thick, dense double coat to protect it in extreme northern conditions. Reds aren’t allowed because they look like knock-off saints. Literally that’s it. It’s stupid to me. But it’s the only color restriction I personally know of that is really something that makes no sense.
To touch on the lab thing that doberbutts mentioned - it's probably not just opinion but actual fact that most chocolate labradors have a wildly different temperament
Basically for a long time only black was acceptable, and then black & yellow and it wasn't until the mid 20th century chocolate labs were accepted into UK breed standard. In the 70s chocolate labs saw an EXPLOSION in popularity, but it's a hard colour to breed for because recessive genes & being soft culled for years etc.
So 2 things happened. First, a LOT of line breeding, since the easiest way to guarantee chocolate is breeding your existing ones together. The second thing that happened, under the table and unofficially, is that chocolate breeders added in chesapeake bay retrievers. They exclusively come in liver, meaning you can get some genetic diversity but also guarantee getting that coat colour you're charging way more for. Obviously OFFICIALLY that wasn't the case, but chessies have a COMPLETELY different temperament from labs, despite the similar appearance.
Finally, these dogs were being bred for colour, so were primarily for show or pet homes over working homes. The breed split in labs is pretty clear, which makes chocolates even MORE of an outlier since they're coming from the generally more docule/relaxed/easy going show lines, but have this intense, less biddable, high energy dog bred in secretly.
Obviously that doesn't apply to all lines or all chocolates, but it is part of why the ideas around chocolates being a crazy uncontrollable kind of lab came from - because comparatively they often are. To this day its HIGHLY uncommon to see chocolate working labs compared to their "showline" counterparts, where it's a relatively even split with black and yellows.

Hi please make sure this isn’t her Alpha Walk. Her posture is very dominant. Dogs might do this when they finally became the Pack Leaders due to the toxicity of treats.
It’s too late. She’s overthrown me years ago and I can’t do anything about it. I have to do everything she says or else she’ll beat me with a sheep horn.

New Dogblr
Hello! My name is Veronica. I recently adopted an 11 week old husky mix named Aspen. I’m looking to become more involved in the dogblr community. I’m specifically interested in positive reinforcement training, agility, vet med, and hiking/outdoors activities with dogs. Please reblog so I can meet more dogblrs! I follow back! Looking forward to getting more involved in this community :)
Hiya!! Your puppy is so adorable 😭
Oh no! Ah! I need help :~(
As I’ve mentioned, I’m currently on medical leave from work to give my body time to recover from 6 months of MRSA infections, a seemingly endless Lyme flare, and to figure out my meds and broken sleep/wake cycle.
It takes between 1-2 weeks for the short term disability application to go through. I thought I was going to be fine because a lot of coworkers have donated their paid-time-off (PTO) hours to me to use in the meantime...
But, as it turns out, none of the donated PTO was applied to today’s paycheck, which was for pay period 1/13-1/26. My last day at work was 1/20, and before that, each shift was only between 2-5 hours tops because I kept needing to leave early once my ever-increasing mobility issues started to kick in.
So instead of the full paycheck I was expecting, I received less than half of what I normally make. I was not able to set much money aside throughout the month, as I was missing a considerable amount of work/hours by continuously needing to arrive hours late, or leave hours early.
I was wholly expecting to be able to pay rent out of this check and to just skimp by on what was left over until next check (2/14), but with what I received I don’t even have enough to make rent, let alone feed myself, put gas in my car to get to/from appointments, etc. I’m so scared!
All of my other bills are good until after my next check, which should be normal. All of my creatures have plenty of food to last until then, as well. I’m solely worried about rent, human food, and gas. I don’t know what else to do but ask you guys for assistance! I don’t have family or any other sort of safety net, and my savings has been depleted through all of the work I was missing between August and when I left for my leave of absence.
If you would, if you could, please consider donating some funds my way, if you can spare it. I’m so so sorry to ask.
From what I have in the bank right now, I would need around $100 more to make rent. I’m pretty good at making money stretch when necessary, but I usually need a minimum of $300ish to make it the two weeks between checks.
So I suppose I’m asking for your help in raising anywhere from $100-$500 to get me through until my next check.
I’m not really sure what I could offer in return. You could request specific photos of specific pets in my care! I won’t be able to pay anyone back, because once the short term disability kicks in, I’ll only be making 60% of my usual wages. 😳
I have Venmo, ApplePay, CashApp, and Facebook Measenger. I don’t have PayPal, but my best mate does, and you could send it to her! So if PayPal is your preference, inquire within for the info. I don’t have my own because I simply do not know how to use it.
I prefer to avoid CashApp if possible, but if you are able to donate anything at all, please use whichever app is best for you!
Venmo: @remywalsh
ApplePay: Inquire for phone number
Fb Messenger: Remy Walsh; profile photo is me laying on some concrete.
CashApp: $arlovenn
I have until 2/5 to pay my rent without a late fee.
If you would consider reblogging this for me, that would also be greatly appreciated. I know that money is tight for a lot of us these days, so I feel quite guilty posting this request. I’ve never been this broke before! I’ve never been unable to pay my rent. I’m quite scared, honestly. Trying not to panic.
P.S. dogblr mutuals feel free to friend me on fb whether you’re able to donate or not :)
Baloo saw snow for the first time, I think he's impressed 😂
