“Describe homestuck” is a weird question, because you can describe the overarching plot but not the weird branches it shoots off into

Like, “Homestuck is about a reality altering video game that comes about at the end of every world that, if beaten, allows the players to become gods of the next world. we follow four kids from our world who play it, the aliens from the previous game that made our world, and a ‘reboot’ game that comes about when ours fails.”

And then someone asks about how the fuck Betty Crocker plays into it and you don’t fucking know how to answer without a goddamn essay

Gamzee didn't need a "redemption arc" because he was never going to be "redeemed". Redemption is a fictional concept, because it creates an illusion that the redempted is lesser (and in a way, will always be lesser) than the person calling for the redemption. Literally when Callie says to Egbert that they should let Gamzee out Egbert automatically is on edge. Gamzee was never going to be redeemed because redemption is based on how much you're worth to the main characters. And if you aren't worth anything to the characters you're supposed to care about, why should you care about the one trying to change? Karkat is rightfully traumatized by Gamzee, and he doesn't need to forgive Gamzee for what he's done to him. Gamzee's value is not determined by Karkat's opinion of him though. You can hate someone all you want, but ultimately their life is theirs to care about, not yours. Nobody gave Gamzee a chance, and only focused on the shit that he did wrong and never bothered to tell him that he was being an asshole. They LET him do the shit that he did. Because his worth meant nothing to them. The writers didn't help at all either because people label the characters who are "good" and "bad", and if a majority of the fandom hates a character, ofc they're going to make that character even more hated if they hate them as well. Gamzee is a polarizing character. Lots of fans don't understand his motives. That's part of his fucking character, and its really important to his character too. REAL people like him exist. It can be really disheartening to see a character so goddamn relatable and that you connect with so heavily be treated like absolute scum of the earth. He didn't deserve redemption, he deserved to heal. Healing is hard. Coming to terms with the fact that you have traumatized the people most important to you is even harder. Losing those connections are difficult. Healing is arguably more messy than the trauma it's lead to. How you heal and when you heal is not determined by the people who don't see your value. It's a choice you have to make yourself. It honestly would've been funny if the first thing that Egbert did in candy was dump Gamzee off at a psych ward so the cast didn't have to deal with him (aka never coming out and being put in a straight jacket because lets be honest, thats what they thought would happen.) and Gamzee actually ends up being the most functional adult out of all of them. Thats redemption.
