GRAVITY FALLS "INSIDE JOB" MEANING REVEALED!

As many of you know, hidden within the Collectors Edition of the Gravity Falls Box Set were some Bill Cipher Easter Eggs. One Easter Egg that had been found was a reversed message from Bill. When reverted back to normal, he spoke of the keyword: INSIDE JOB. Many of us didn’t know what it meant.

UNTIL NOW.

Within Gravity Falls: Lost Legends ー which was just released yesterday ー there were several secret codes scattered throughout the book. In all four stories, several scattered words were found, in which when put together could form the sentence:

“TO FIND A SPIDER, SEARCH THE WEB”.

There was also a code within the Table of Contents page, hidden on the side of the table. When you use the phrase above to decode it using Vigenere Cipher, it comes out to:

“SHMEB-YOU-UNLOCKED”.

There is actually a website that you can find under that name, which I’ll picture down below, along with a link:

Once you go there, you’ll be met with several different notebooks, and a message from Shmebulock telling you how anti-social you are for actually having the time to find the website.

Every book has a description about a certain item or character. AND, every book has a code at the bottom.

When decoded using the key “INSIDE JOB”, you get all the hidden messages about each character or object. I’ll list what they say below:

i couldn’t figure out what is the code on the table, and i see the bigger message contained here is “to find extra secrets big and little if you want to crack the riddle search the web” but i don’t know what to do from here. there’s the message in binary “a spider” too, i thought “the web” could be the internet but maybe it’s some cobweb (or maybe it’s just a joke i don’t get, like a SPY-der)? yeah, feel free to add to this post

but oh shit:

- the Society of the Blind Eye still exists

- something happened to Wendy’s mom. there’s a mystery tub named Mrs. Corduroy, i remember it was confirmed somewhere “wendy’s mom isn’t between us” but that could mean she’s in another dimension? somehow. what happened to her, what did she do/saw?

- blendin got in trouble at the black market

- “BILL LIVES” o h  s h i t  I INVOKE THE ANCIENT POWER THAT I MAY RETURN bill is a bad bitch you cant kill him i like the theories that bill lives inside stan’s mind

- blendin still has beef with h. g. wells (”not h.g. wells approved”) the message “for a good time call shmebulock” could be important too or shmebulock is offering an interesting kind of service (eyes emoji). it reminded me of when people had to call a number during the cipher hunt, but i don’t know what to do with this too. and regarding the end of the whole comic, “shmebulock” gotta be a key to a vigenère cipher

Guide to Some of the Codes and Hidden Content on the DVDs

So, @pinetreedipper on Twitter posted that they’d cracked a bunch of the codes on the DVDs late last week (tweet one, tweet two), and then @DeannaDurand on Twitter chimed in with some more info on how to get to some of the easter eggs and hidden features on the DVDs (tweet here).  And then Brian Ward, who works for Shout! Factory, chimes in with a little advice.

(As always – I wasn’t able to track down whether either of these folks has a Tumblr and if they have posted to there.  If you know they do, let me know and I will reblog from them!)

I’m putting screencaps of the tweets below a read-more, so that folks can avoid these if you’d prefer to work on them and solve them yourself!

One of my favorite tropes is “Villain Decay”. It’s not a redemption or reformation - the character themself doesn’t necessarily change morally or behaviorally, but the as the stakes become higher and more serious antagonists are introduced, the original villain seems harmless and friendly in comparison.
