hi! there aren’t enough harry fics so i took matters into my own hands and wrote this bc i’m a simp for him! also, sorry this is sad :/
people associate things with their memories, but harry’s pink sweater was more than just a memory to you. it was the first time that he had said “i love you,” your first kiss, and the first time that you had let your guard down around him. that sweater took a whole lot of your firsts, and it wasn’t going to stop there.
you still had yet to say the three simple words that meant so much to so many people, to harry. you needed to know that those words were used towards a forever relationship, and not a for-the-mean-time relationship. you needed to know that you weren’t just using it towards something the two of you were throwing away.
harry and you were walking home from getting dinner. it was about 7 pm, and the sun was in the midst of setting. you were wearing his sweater, the sweater, and leggings with an old pair of all black converse, while harry was wearing blue skinny jeans and his black sweater that he’d gotten from cherry. that was also one of your favourite sweaters of his to steal, and let’s be real here, he loved seeing you in his clothes.
he had your hand in his, and with your fingers intertwined, he knew that the two of you were going to be forever. at least, he had wanted you to be his forever. he would wait forever for you, for you to be with him, for you to tell him that you love him. he would do anything for you, and the both of you knew that that feeling was mutual.
“did you know, that most people have met the person that they end up marrying now? like at our age?” he asked you. you smiled up at him. he was so fascinated by things like this- he was so fascinated about forever.
“do you think we’re gonna be together forever?” you asked him. you looked down at the ground as you two continued walking, scared to see what his face looked like as he processed the question.
“i know we’re gonna be together forever.”
and for the first time you knew without a doubt that harry holland was going to be yours forever.
the two of you were sat down on the couch next to each other, closer together than the rest of the boys. you were all having a little movie night, now you see me 2 playing on the screen. you were wearing sweatpants and his pink sweater, but harry made you feel gorgeous in it. everyone was paying attention to the movie, and to be honest, you and harry couldn’t care less about it.
he had his arm wrapped around you, your head on his chest, and a blanket draped over the both of you.
everyone loved that the two of you were together, and everyone saw it coming. the two of you seemed as if you were made for each other, as if you were soulmates. you brought out the best in each other, everyone seemed to think. everything that you two did was perfect in others eyes, and in yours, it was more than perfect. he was everything you could’ve asked for and more.
as the two of you sat on the couch that night, the movie playing while he held on to you, you knew in that moment that you were madly in love with him.
a war had started in your basement. the two of you were screaming back and forth, over who knows what. it was impossible for you two to stop, and even though that was all the both of you wanted, you both wanted to be right.
to be honest, neither of you knew how it started or what started it, but it escalated to you both yelling at each other very quickly.
“i. love. you,” he yelled out. was this a ceasefire or was this him surrendering? you froze as he said that. the world all of a sudden stopped, and it was all because of those three words.
“well, are you going to say anything or should i leave now?” he asked. you just stared at him in awe. how could he still love you after you said all of those nasty remarks? how could he not be mad at you? how could he say that so confidently?
harry saw you just staring at him, and he walked towards you, crossing no man’s land until he was standing right in front of you, your bodies just barely touching.
taking your hands in his, he said, “i love the way your face lights up whenever anything exciting happens; i love how when we walk home after walking tessa together you play music, skip ahead at times, and pretend like you’re in a music video; i love the way your hair frames your face; and i love how passionate you are. i love everything about you and more.”
you just looked up at him, your eyes fixed on him in awe.
those four words were all that harry ever needed.
two years after your first fight marked the end of you two. you gave each other everything over those two years and four months, but that didn’t seem to matter at this point, now did it?
people change, and things happen. don’t blame this on yourself, you told yourself, but it wasn’t convincing enough. you sat in your room listening to the songs he would sing to you, just lying on your bed wearing that pink sweater and holding onto the bear that harry had won you on a date at the amusement park.
how did you end up here? wasn’t he supposed to be your soulmate? you two were in love, weren’t you? how did you both just fall apart? how could you both just fall apart?
hey, i was wondering when it would be okay for us to exchange our stuff.
harry had texted you, and you were just trying to forget about all of the sadness right now; but how could it be that easy? you loved him, and you weren’t ready to let him go, but you had to remind yourself that things don’t work out all the time.
i guess you can come by mine in a few hours. just let me know when i guess?
you had no idea what to say. this was harder than you thought, you really didn’t wanna give back his sweater. that was all you had left of him, and in a few hours it was all going to be gone.
sounds good, see you around five?
if harry were to come to your house at five, that would give you about four hours to compose yourself and got everything ready; you could do this, right?
four hours pass, and you’re opening your front door. a cardboard box is in harry’s arms, and one’s in yours as well.
“uh- hi.” you said, uncertain of whether or not your voice was going to be able to function. he just stood there looking at the ground before he made eye contact with you.
“hey.” just one word. that was all he said. nothing more, nothing less. at least he acknowledged your presence, right?
there was nothing you wanted to do more than cry, ask what you did wrong, ask what you could do for the two of you to get back together. you wanted to give him one last kiss, one last hug before you two parted ways. you just wanted to hear him say “i love you,” one last time.
the two of you exchanged the boxes, and then he was walking away from your house. one final goodbye with him and the sweater, and one final look at the person who was supposed to be with you forever.
