I am turning 24 soon and I can't help but freak out. I know what I am about to say next is going to sound very trivial compared to what is happening around the world now but I can't stop thinking that there will come a time when I would be considered too old to be in a fandom. Like what would happen when I turn 35/45/55?? Won't it be awkward? Would it be creepy if I still read ao3 fics in my 60s? I don't want to go away from the fandom space. It helps me so much to cope in this world.
my advice is to block and mute anyone who makes you feel that way and enjoy posting about batman with the other well-adjusted adults who like to enjoy things on the internet
most of the best fanfic is produced by women who are over thirty. older women arenât just âstillâ on AO3, theyâre producing the highest-rated content. older women are the backbone of fandom and always have been: they are archivists, skilled costumers and writers, professional artists and editors and videographers and organizers. they run the fests, they code the archive itself, they volunteer, they watch out for people. they invented zines and webrings and conventions and cosplay and so many things kids just take for granted as natural parts of fandom.
mature, experienced women are hands down the most valuable resource any sphere of human activity can accrue. becoming one of them isnât a tragedy, itâs an honor.Â
Thereâs this one author whoâs stories are my favourite for that fandom, and most of them were posted when she was in her 50ies - the last story she posted would have been written when she was 64.
Age should never be a barrier to doing what you love and enjoying what makes you happy.
The wonderful thing is that once you hit your 60s, you donât care what others think. You know what matters in life, and whatâs important to you and you do that. For some like me, that includes fanfic and tumblr. I follow those who appeal to me and ignore the rest. Easy as. (Iâm 61.) Hugs dear souls. đ¤đ¤đ

OK, I have some more to say about this.
I have seen some of the typical hand-wringing stuff from liberals and âmoderatesâ about how this was a mistake, sheâs âstooping to his level,â we lost the moral high ground, civility what of civility, etc.Â
All of this is wrong and misses the point.
The worst thing that can happen when you have a corrupt and autocratic ruler who is setting the country on fire and, let us not forget, routinely creating policies and conditions that deliberately produce suffering and death for vulnerable people, is for him and his bullshit to become normalized. If we do not maintain our awareness of how wrong and NOT NORMAL this situation is, then it becomes normal and it becomes a lot harder to change.
Why is Pelosi a more effective leader of the opposition than many of the people actually running for the Democratic presidential nomination? Because she gets this. She is done pretending that he is a president. He doesnât act like one, he doesnât think like one, he doesnât even know what it would mean to be one, and we should not be in the business of pretending that he is one. The consistent message of everything she does that goes viral is: I have compassion for this man as one of Godâs creatures but he is not a president and he should not be in that office.
Is this a kind of scary moment? Yes. Yes it is. Because it performs and acknowledges something terrifying but undeniably true: the relationship between the executive and the legislature is profoundly broken and it cannot be repaired until he is removed from that office. This isnât just saying, as a gesture, âHis speech is already trash in a figurative sense and it will soon be trash in a literal sense.â Itâs also demonstrating the effect that Buttercup has on the country and on the government. He went in there and put on his show and he further ripped up something that was already torn: the Constitution, the checks and balances, the legislature, whatever.
But you know what, we have to be scared by this, because it is scary. Anyone who thinks Buttercup is worried about being caught againâŚI will just say that they are wrong. Itâs going to be more or less open war now. He will go after everyone he can reach with everything heâs got because thatâs what he does.
But we had to do this; and we have to keep doing it. We need to keep alive the knowledge that Schiff quite rightly said is in the hearts even of those people who voted to acquit him: he is unfit for the job and it is dangerous to leave him in it. If we let that feeling die, then itâs over.Â
Also: everyone has probably forgotten this, but early in his administration there were stories about the fact that Buttercup has a habit of tearing up documents after using them. US law says that every document the President creates or signs has to be archived. Buttercup just rips documents up after heâs done with them, forcing the staffers to scurry around collecting the pieces and taping them back together so they can be archived. Why does he do that? Because, obviously, heâs learned that if youâre too dumb to know whatâs incriminating and whatâs notâwhich he obviously isâthe safest course is just to destroy all the evidence. I donât know whether Pelosi was deliberately responding to that or not. But letâs remember in all this whoâs the Shredder In Chief here.
Tear him up, Nancy. Every which way you can.

If there was a way to run SUPER MEGA AD BLOCKER on this website I fucking would
âPlease oh please open up your computer to a porn virus! If you donât youâre evil!â
Freeloader Cominâ through!
We didnât start this war internet users have with ads - We might have moaned about banner ads, but it was only when they started making noises when we might be listening to music or a podcast or whatever, causing two sound sorces at once, that we started trying to block ads universally rather than just a specific type of ad (pop ups).
And since then ads have gotten worse - Actual malware rather than merely breaking one of the fundamental sins of web design - though shalt not autoplay anything with sound. And the more aggressive a website is with âplease turn off adblockâ the less I trust it to bother to vet ads and advertisers to make sure theyâre not installing malware.
Not to mention that the idea that avoiding ads is âfreeloadingâ is hilariously backward. Advertisement is a transaction between the platform and the advertiser, the user has no obligation to provide the views/clicks the platform has promised. Using an adblocker isnât freeloading in the same way that leaving the room to get a snack during a commercial break isnât cheating the tv network.
Ok yâall, I work as a web developer and Iâm here to tell you that you are 100% right and that itâs shit. SO Iâm going to tell you how to get around websites that block you from using their website if youâre using an adblocker.Â
Every website uses a language called JavaScript; long story short itâs a website language that allows developers to do the crazy shit you see on websites. Now the easiest thing to do is to disable JavaScript to stop them from knowing you have an adblocker:
Oh no! Iâm blocked from viewing the website. It would be a terrible shame if I were able to right click and select the âinspectâ feature
Click the three dots in the top right and open the âSettingsâ Menu
And then scrolled down to âDebuggerâ and checked the âDisable Javascript Optionâ
And then just refreshed the page

Let's talk about mynoise.net
Have you ever been listening to Rainymood and thought, âYeah, this is good ⌠but it would be nice if I could customize the sound more, or if there was a little more choice.
Let me introduce you to MyNoise.
MyNoise is a customizable sounscape looper with so many options, even within each soundscape. Â So say, for instance, you really love rain sounds when you write or study or relax. Â Anything. Â I know Iâm a big fan of rain sounds. Â They have a page for that.
But say you like really high, pattery rain, and LOTS of low thunder.  Hereâs where MyNoise really stands out: you can customize that.  See those sliders with all the cute colors?  That is your equalizer. You can adjust the levels based on what you want to hear more and less of.  Hereâs how it looks when you want high, pattery rain and low, rumbly thunder:
But say rain isnât really your jam. Â Say you want something a little more ambient, a little more background noise-y. Â Something with people. Â Well, they have customizable coffee house chatter that even has the levels listed for things like âkitchen,â âbabble,â and âtableâ:
Or say you miss the ocean.
Or say you miss your cat.
Or say you miss your spaceship.
Or say you miss the dungeon where you and your team of scalawag adventurers used to explore and face off against, say, dragons. Â In the dungeon.
This site is seriously so helpful, and those are just a fraction of every kind of sounscape the site has to offer.  The best part is that if you want to layer it with music (for instance, Iâll layer a playlist + rain + coffee shop if the scene Iâm writing takes place in a coffee shop), you can adjust the master volume, meaning all of your layers stay at their respective volumes, just louder or quieter.
Enjoy!
OH MY GOD
YâALL I JUST STARTED USING THIS TODAY BUT THIS HAS BROKEN THROUGH MY WRITERâS BLOCK LIKE NOTHING ELSE.
TRY IT. USE IT. LOVE IT.
Gonna try this later. Seems like an amazing great idea
A lovely thing about mynoise is that itâs the first (and still only) website Iâve seen to offset its carbon footprint. Data, you see, has a high carbon footprint - as does the internet infrastructure you use to move the data, and the power burned by your device itself. Dr Pigeon calculated that the millions of users using mynoise adds up to 600 tons of CO2 per year - and heâs planting the equivalent in trees.
Learn more here: https://mynoise.net/carbonFootprintCompensation.php
If you like the idea, it makes sense to ask other websites you use if theyâll consider doing the same thing.
