I am totally cool with people having criticisms of Dispatch and it's writing, there's no such thing as a perfect story and even I have my nitpicks. However I don't think "it's not my job to babysit an adult woman" is very fair because that's literally what the Phoenix Program is about. That is Robert's job. The entire point of working with the Z-Team is rehabilitation.
Lemme preface this with saying You Do Not Have to Like Invisigal but Let Me Yap about this for a sec.
Invisigal is a neurodivergent and disabled at-risk person who's medical debt was used against her to make her do jobs for the Red Ring. Her lung capacity was deteriorating in front of her and she truly believed that it was her only option.
As someone who has both ADHD and a physical disability I can understand her desperation and fears and why she would take that option. If I met someone who told me they could fix my legs and spine and let me run again for free I would feel desperate to take the offer. But that offer trapped her in service to Shroud and being used like a tool.
Her entire life she has been convinced that she's biologically and mentally incapable of being good or worthy of love. (I personally think her abrasive side is a coping mechanism for RSD but that's me.) My point is that I get her. I can understand why she does the things she does and don't see her as a 'magic pixie dream alt girl' like some others do. I see someone in need who's been left behind by the system and has tried to survive with mixed results.
She so so desperately wants to be seen as someone who can be a good person and as someone who can change, but if you don't give her the chances she needs she gives up. She stops trying and that's why the achievement for the Bad Ending says you failed. Because that was your job.
You don't expect someone who's quitting an addictive substance to cold turkey one and done throw off their addiction. They'll relapse sometimes and it's baby steps. In rehab situations you need to be a guiding hand to help them through these hurdles and be an external voice of support.
The amount of people I've seen completely abandon her in the story because of her past actions that she's obviously been extremely regretful of since the moment she did them just kinda unnerved me.
Like damn.
I appreciate the fuck out of this. Especially the comparison to addiction because that was my thought as well. I have a friend who has suffered with addiction and I've been there since the beginning to "the end" (it never really ends). And people like that almost always have something else going on in their environment that pushes them to those extremes.
The thing about people who go through that sort of struggle is that they will hurt you and betray you BUT a lot of the times they want to be better. And if you truly care about them and you're able to weather the storm, the best thing you can do for them is give them consistent and judgement free support.
It's a hard thing to do, and I fell short many times but I would do it over again in a heart beat because I love her. I see a lot of my friend in visi, the self destructive tendencies, the self loathing and guilt, the hostility towards affection either because they feel like they don't deserve it or they've been burned before, and the blatant crossing of boundaries.
I think she's a well written character with legitimate character flaws, but that's what makes her feel so human.
I'm so tired of the boot straps myth. People who are at rock bottom need help. Some might be able to get out of that hole themselves but that's an insane thing to expect of people.
If you truly believe that people are able to change then you need to be able to meet them where they are at. It's never a pleasant place to be. But tough love, compassion, empathy, and just the improvement of their material conditions can be the difference between a statistic and a life saved.

It's so heartwarming yet heartbreaking that Yang's first reaction after hearing Blake say "I love you too" is complete shock/disbelief, because she cannot process the fact at first that she is loved back by this woman that she's adored for so long.
And then we have Blake who is just smiling from the first moment already like "Yeah, I love you and I am not afraid to tell you that anymore. We've been through so much and worked through our shit individually as well as together, and I'm ready to love & be loved again."
These children aren't mine, but I love them 😭 Was posted earlier on my Boosty, along with the initial sketches.
