I have a 9 to 5 but the country is still ending
I used to think the world would end in a violent, global dystopian nightmare. But I am starting to realize how naïve it was to believe that the U.S. couldn’t decline without dragging the rest of the world down with it. Looking back, that assumption seems foolish.
I’ve heard stories about how Venezuela was once a thriving nation but fell from power in the 2010s. More importantly, even though Venezuela may now be unrecognizable compared to what it once was, it is still very much a country. The same goes for Iran and Syria, both of which once had levels of global influence before declining due to their governments' actions.
I am not sure if it is because I am an American or if this is something every citizen feels, but we tend to view our country as a permanent force until reality proves otherwise. Lately, it is sinking in that I don’t think I can trust any nation to avoid falling into chaos, especially not this one. Even if things do improve here, how am I supposed to trust that it won’t all happen again?
It is clear to me that this is the end of what this country once was. Yes, it has been in decline for some time, but it wasn’t a lost cause. Now, I am no longer sure we can ever go back.
But this isn’t an apocalypse, even within America. It is the end of one version of this country, and there’s no going back to what it was or to what it might have become. And yet, tomorrow morning, I will get up and go to work, just like it is a normal Wednesday. Humans are strange creatures. Even as society unravels, we cling to routines and act as if everything is fine. Maybe that is our biggest flaw, this ability to normalize the abnormal. It feels like no one is taking any of this seriously, even as I sit at my desk, watching it all happen.
Outside, ICE raids are taking place, live-streamed online for amusement. Government workers, ordinary people trying to make sensible regulations they understand better than politicians, are being fired en masse. People are being removed from the military because of who they are. A Fox News host now controls the most overfunded military in the world, and someone openly consuming Russian propaganda is in charge of homeland security.
And with all this happening, I will be expected to go to work tomorrow morning and act like everything is normal, as if it is not affecting me.
Just goes to show the companies complying in advance to the current administration are CHOOSING to do so and the decent ones AREN'T

need a polite way to say "im not engaging in a discussion on this topic with you because the conclusions you have reached are based on so many interwoven layers of misconceptions it would be easier to just like, hard reset your whole brain, just start over as a baby and try again"
To anyone wondering if it's worth it to tear down fascist posters or whatever. I spent a few months last year engaged in silent battle with another student at my school who was putting anti trans stickers up everywhere. I had it down to a system where every night I would walk the five block radius they went up in, and tear down all the ones I could reach, and use a stick to put duct tape over the others. Like, within hours of the stickers going up, I would have already purged the whole zone. I knew the basic schedule of whoever put them up based on when and where the stickers appeared. I probably could have found them in person if I'd wanted to. And I told all my classmates and friends what the stickers looked like and got them to rip them down too. And after a few months of this, the stickers slowed, and then stopped forever.
My point is, a lot of this fashy or right wing stuff is one local weirdo. And if you pay attention, and do a little light organizing with your friends, you can basically make their efforts into a giant sisyphisean exercise in misery. You control your streets!
Tyranny wants you to despair. If you're loyal to the tyrants then they want you downtrodden so you'll obey them out of desperation. If you're looking to resist the tyrants then they want you to suffer so you can't put up a fight. Either way they want you broken.
Oppressors don't want you out there making things harder on them. Resistance doesn't have to be done in grand gestures or with heroic sacrifice. All it needs to do is make it that much harder for the bad guys to do bad things. That's it. We outnumber them. It adds up.

Being adult is having the “We have food at home” talk with yourself
here are some big pet peeves of mine: when toxic people constantly make themselves “victims” in situations where there aren’t victims to begin with. when toxic people guilt others for making decisions based on the health of themselves and those around them (a true mystery), when toxic people have old friends who consistently cancel plans/ avoid being around that person, or when toxic people who have friends who express genuine worry for the situation that person is in, and those certain toxic people continue to ignore the fact that they have a problem/ are creating problems. idk. i know this isn’t a rant blog, but i’m watching friends of mine go through the same situations i’ve gone through with really negative people and having the exact same issues with those people that i (and many others) have also had, and it’s just really sad to me. i genuinely believe people can change, and i really hope that someday people can come to the realization that they make mistakes too, and a lot of times those mistakes really hurt people. i wish the best for everyone, but yikes.
It’s okay that you’re not who you thought you would be
