I get that the main characters of Iron Widow are, objectively, antiheroes BUT... I refuse to be objective about this book, I love them, I don't care, exceptionally spicy cinnamon rolls, the lot of them, must be protected at all costs, sweet little murder beans

I’m currently reading Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao, I’m not even past the 30% mark of the book in and I’m already so in love with it. Wu Zetian (the mc) is so. Fucking. Angry.

Not cutesy-haha-kind-of-snarky angry. She’s unhinged angry. Rotten heart, festering soul with wrath. Really disgusted with the state of the world and ready to rip its ugly throat out with her bare teeth.

I love it.

I love the extent to which the anger motivates her, and moves the plot forward, but doesn’t make her invincible. She still struggles with gaslighting and doubting herself and everyone around her.

Also, the pain of her lotus feet is not there for “edgy points” or simple aesthetic characterization. Is an integral part of how she perceives reality. The first time she takes control of a Chrysalis, the thing that gets her out of the stupor and confusion and allows her to focus is that she takes a step and her feet don’t hurt. So her mental coming-to-terms with “hey this mega-soul-robot thing is actually cool and liberating” is both cathartic and well-earned and absolutely in character.

She’s not unrealistically overpowered either. She knows she can’t win against a huge buff dude. But she knows she has a strong mind and uses it.

I love her. I simply love her.

Her and the fantastic author for creating such a striking character.

I can't believe that it took this long for someone to write a violent dystopia novel where the love triangle is an actual triangle but I'm so glad that Xiran Jay Zhao was the one to write it.

"A triangle is the strongest shape." YEAH, IT SURE FUCKING IS, ZETIAN.
