HP: Soulmate or Partner

The general idea is that for Hermione: Harry is her soulmate while Ron is her partner/lover/husband

Which creates the ship war/debate of Harmione/Harmony (HarryxHermione) and Ronmione (RonxHermione)

The crux of it is who should Hermione (and in general a person) be with between the two

I think the best summary (if soulmate vs lover isn’t enough) I can probably make for them is this:

Harry is more of her partner/ride or die, they align on a lot of things and support each other through everything, etc He is her best friend

Where Ron is her balance, opposites attract, they’re two halves of a whole, etc he is the man she fell in love with

They do have their negatives/what makes them not perfect (granted no one could truly be perfect)

Harry is more withdrawn emotionally so it has led to him and Hermione having difficulty in those areas together

Ron and she argue a ton, I think (at least in the movies would have to fact-check me on the books) no one has made Hermione cry more than Ron

So funnily enough one she can’t talk to when things are emotionally high/low and one she gets in fights with when things are emotionally high/low almost exact opposites

The debate has many aspects to it that I can’t go into

You can go from the literal book to see what makes more sense or what is actually presented

You can go from the meta-perspective as the author herself has said she should have changed the pairings

You can just put your personal feelings and thoughts on them such as if you think Ron&Hermione are toxic or Harry&Hermione are sibling coded

I can’t go into it all, I tried and I see both sides

So initially had the whole post going over the dynamics of Ron&Hermione and Harry&Hermione. With some Harry&Ginny

But I honestly see both (all three?) sides of it, Harmione probably my fav of the three if it wasn’t obvious above, I do like Ronmione a lot and I really do like Hinny

I do think a better written/handled Ginny could truly be the ideal partner for Harry and a better handled Ronmione to lean away from some of their more toxic aspects I might like it more as well

I do think that since she didn't write Harry and Hermione to be obviously romantic they avoided the pitfalls the romance writing had imo and instead had such a strong friendship to the point fans consider them soulmates

I'm completely for platonic male/female friendships, in this situation I do think that they are just a better match so to speak and the male/female friendship could have just been Ron&Hermione if we have to have one

Plus I've always been a sucker for the best friends-to-lovers trope in nearly everything that has a cast and a romantic plot/subplot so that's probably my bias

I already regret posting this as Harry Potter isn't my wheelhouse lol

So my two main OTPs are Jonsa and Harmony. And it's so funny because the first couple are literally(they believe) brother and sister(but are actually cousins) and the other is believed by the larger fandom to be "basically brother and sister" cause of that one time Harry-abandonment-issues-Potter said that line after Ron returned.

And people irl are like eww incest shipping. But it's not really because-

a. They're not real people they're fictional characters so I'll ship them how I want.

b. Maybe it's not the incest I like but the lack of toxicity and the feeling of belonging, trust, comfort, warmth and the complete absence of stupid-ass jealousy, bickering and misunderstanding arcs that most fictional romantic couples are embroiled in?

Like God forbid a girl ships a healthy relationship. Like what a freak amirite?!

My 2025 resolution is to revive Harmione from the ashes. I’m too obsessed with it to be on my own. On to writing fanfic and creating multiple posts, let’s go!!!

Why do I ship Harmione you may ask? Antis would say it’s only because of movie propaganda (which is false because people were shipping Harmione before the movies even came out.) and I haven’t even watched the movies apart form the first one. So here are my favourite Harmione book moments that made me ship it!!!

Exhibit 1: First, for those who say that Harry HATES spending time with Hermione (from a quote that was taken out if context.)

There are many instances where they joke around and have fun. They enjoy spending time with each other. It’s literally describes that her face ‘shines with glee at the prospect of spending more time with Harry. She doesn’t do a jig often or make fun of teachers.

Exhibit 2: She comforts him in a way… as she ‘kisses him on the cheek’

She had never done it before to Ron either at this point. And they’re not shy about physical intimacy

Exhibit 3:

Wowww, so he finds her so beautiful that it’s LITERALLY JAW DROPPING.

There could be attraction there. Harry OBVIOUSLY doesn’t find Hermione unattractive.

And neither does Hermione

“Oh, come on, said Hermione suddenly impatient… frankly you’ve never been more fanciable.”

She acts like Harry being fanciable is the most obvious thing ever.

Exhibit 4: He was stunned to silence when he complimented her. He couldn’t believe that she thought his words were worth memorising. He takes her compliments in high regard.

He, of course thinks highly of her and compliments her as such too

Again she seems so pleased. ( gleamed and radiant. Common synonyms when she’s around him).

Exhibit 5: This whole scene speaks for itself

And why was Hermione beaming at HARRY the moment the narration says ‘bonded for life.’

And lastly

Probably the most heartfelt, romantic and intimate moment they had.

Hermione ALONE shares Harry’s most significant moments of emotional development in the series twice. Once when his discovers his father’s connection to his patronus and at his parents grave side where he comes to term with their deaths. Their causal touches lingering around their waist…

Okay, this is made Harrenhal 100x more real to me.

Why do you think Sansa is so dreamy? I have a hard time believing that it was because how she was raised. Both her parents seem to be very practical especially her mother. Her father though naive isn't someone I would say would have his head in the clouds even as a child. Even though she is septa Mordane's favourite, I think she was also a strict teacher. Maybe some children are just different regardless of the circumstances in which they are raised. All the children are naive but Sansa seems to me a bit extra naive than her siblings.

Sansa's dreaminess comes from a few things: 1) Being a Girly Girl that the Princess in the Tower traditionally represents 2) Her love for songs and arts and inclination towards romanticism 3) Escapism. The show briefly nods to this quality in Sansa in the earlier seasons.

Sansa: That's not how the game works. You're not supposed to just blurt out the right answer. You've got to invent a story about where the ship is going and why.

Shae: Why should i make up a story when I know the truth?

Sansa: Because the truth is either terrible or boring. 

There is a bit of misogyny in looking down at this personality as just naivety. That is the mindset that D&D approached her with, which is why they felt her romanticism had to be ripped away from her completely to the point of cynicism. Sansa is the deconstruction of the Princess in the Tower archetype and it especially shows in AGOT where Sansa's constant rewriting of her reality as a coping mechanism makes her less sympathetic (intentionally by the writer considering the writing methods used) because it also means she keeps deflecting blame onto the wrong people right up to Ned's death.

In doing so, she lies to herself and everyone, but the author at the end of the book spells out that she's a bad liar. Do you realise how meta that is? This is why I keep saying people (even many of her fans - those who think hers is a redemption arc or those who think she did nothing wrong) don't really get the point of her AGOT arc because they read her literally. She is not a passive POV. Her AGOT arc makes her more complex as she allows herself to be more sympathetic by confronting realities from thereon. So much so people think it's a "redemption arc" when it has more in common with Arianne's AFFC arc with her father.

This dreamer nature is an innate quality in her. Temperament isn't always learned. Sometimes you're just wired a certain way. Even Arya is waaaaay wilder than Cat or her brothers could ever be - except Rickon. While Sansa gets her gentleness from Ned, perhaps, the closest she gets to sharing it with one parent is young Catelyn with her playing out songs.

"There's a song," he remembered. "'Jenny of Oldstones, with the flowers in her hair.'"

"We're all just songs in the end. If we are lucky." She had played at being Jenny that day, had even wound flowers in her hair. And Petyr had pretended to be her Prince of Dragonflies. Catelyn could not have been more than twelve, Petyr just a boy. (Catelyn V, ASOS)

But it is a quality still that is uniquely Sansa's because she owns it rather than try to grow out from it completely. Even weaponises it. People with creative bends tend to have dreamer personality traits. If we put it in MBTI terms, book!Sansa is an INFP.

They have a rich inner world, are drawn to the arts and they see the world through those lenses. They live more in their heads and make the world more beautiful in their minds as a hobby or a coping mechanism. Sansa does both as she tries to negotiate with the hard terms of reality. She still rejects her villains' extreme cynicism and that's actually a good thing. They can put her in a cage but they can't make her like them. Not Cersei, not the Hound, not Tyrion and not Littlefinger.

While we never see her writing poetry, her POV conveys her romanticism, which sets her apart from other Starks and almost every other character in the books. The magic in Sansa's life isn't that of the weirwood or dragons but her imagination and flights of fantasy. She creates magic where there is none. As someone who is of a creative bend, I cannot express enough how the loss of wonder can shroud your life. It leads to the loss of hope and it makes life very difficult to live. So I don't see that as naivety but a strength. It is very hard to keep it alive in the face of constant torment. But sometimes it can become a place of solace where you don't feel safe in reality. The ability to forget suffering even for just a moment can help a person access hope and feel free. Not that escapism can't be dangerous too.

Bookwise, she expresses this with an extra sense of giddy excitement at times when she thinks she might be touching escape even slightly.

Back in the safety of her own chambers, she hugged a pillow to her face to muffle a squeal of joy. Oh, gods be good, he did it, he put me aside in front of everyone. When a serving girl brought her supper, she almost kissed her. There was hot bread and fresh-churned butter, a thick beef soup, capon and carrots, and peaches in honey. Even the food tastes sweeter, she thought. (Sansa VIII, ACOK)

But she also wishes to intervene on her own terms. However, small that window is.

She did not want to risk getting food or wine on the new one. I must take it with me to Highgarden. She wanted to look beautiful for Willas Tyrell. Even if Dontos was right, and it is Winterfell he wants and not me, he still may come to love me for myself. Sansa hugged herself tightly, wondering how long it would be before the gown was ready. She could scarcely wait to wear it. (Sansa II, ASOS)

[It] was a woman's gown, not a little girl's, there was no doubt of that. The bodice was slashed in front almost to her belly, the deep vee covered over with a panel of ornate Myrish lace in dove-grey. The skirts were long and full, the waist so tight that Sansa had to hold her breath as they laced her into it. They brought her new shoes as well, slippers of soft grey doeskin that hugged her feet like lovers. "You are very beautiful, my lady," the seamstress said when she was dressed.

"I am, aren't I?" Sansa giggled, and spun, her skirts swirling around her. "Oh, I am." She could not wait for Willas to see her like this. He will love me, he will, he must . . . he will forget Winterfell when he sees me, I'll see that he does. (Sansa III, ASOS)

Book!Sansa has cute quirks to put it in simple terms and honestly? It's a good look on her. We don't see this after her forced wedding to Tyrion until that TWOW sample chapter. It's the promise of a way back home where she had given up all hope.

Even so, she does nurse doubts when she finds out Cersei wants to make her a new gown. But she immediately clamps her doubts down.

"Her Grace is most generous," the seamstress agreed, as she gathered up her things and took her leave.

But why? Sansa wondered when she was alone. It made her uneasy. I'll wager this gown is Margaery's doing somehow, or her grandmother's. (Sansa II, ASOS)

Sansa isn't naive right now. Escapism isn't always naive. Sometimes it's intentional when you cannot escape your circumstances. It makes sense with the whole Princess in the Tower archetype. She cannot ask certain questions because she thinks she might find out something that might endanger her life. It's wilful ignorance. So she reconstructs her reality to cope with it as she has been doing since AGOT but more sympathetically. The reason people are nervous about her last AFFC chapter and the TWOW sample chapter is she gets close to the avoiding accountability like she did in much of AGOT, even if she isn't deflecting blame onto a sympathetic character.

For the first time in a long time, Sansa has agency to play a part in getting what she wants (Winterfell) but she is bound by the terms of her abuser. I feel like I simplified Sansa's "For me" reaction to the lemon cake as dreaminess when it seems to be also about assuring herself about security because she doesn't trust Littlefinger.

The things her aunt had said just before she fell still troubled Sansa greatly. "Ravings," Petyr called them. "My wife was mad, you saw that for yourself." And so she had. All I did was build a snow castle, and she meant to push me out the Moon Door. Petyr saved me. He loved my mother well, and . . .

And her? How could she doubt it? He had saved her.

He saved Alayne, his daughter, a voice within her whispered. But she was Sansa too . . . and sometimes it seemed to her that the Lord Protector was two people as well. (Sansa I, AFFC)

She seems to place Sansa below Sweetrobin and Alayne above him in Littlefinger's eyes.

And best of all, Lord Nestor's cooks prepared a splendid subtlety, a lemon cake in the shape of the Giant's Lance, twelve feet tall and adorned with an Eyrie made of sugar.

For me, Alayne thought, as they wheeled it out. Sweetrobin loved lemon cakes too, but only after she told him that they were her favorites. The cake had required every lemon in the Vale, but Petyr had promised that he would send to Dorne for more. (Alayne I, TWOW)

A better way to frame her excitement for the tourney is think of her as an abused house wife (more like daughter forced into that role) throwing herself into her interests to cope with her circumstances. After the long, cold silence of the Eyrie where her aunt tried to kill her and she witnessed Littlefinger kill her aunt, tourney planning is a needed escape for Sansa. She is hiding and trying to find joy wherever she can.

As for focusing on inspiring bravery in Sweetrobin rather than Littlefinger's Machiavellan plans, which she knows aren't out of goodwill, Sansa sees the world as more than it is or could be or how she needs it to be. She cares for the boy, not just the lord and Littlefinger's "bigger concerns", despite what he wants and despite clamping down doubts about sweetsleep. She comes up with the idea because his shaking fits often happen due to anxiety. She tries to find a longterm solution where Littlefinger will not. But she needs help with learning the structural means to make it happen and she gets that. It's not all a waste - even if Littlefinger is overspending and doing it for his selfish reasons. But she really would do better with someone like Jon teaching her practicalities because she wouldn't have to stop herself from asking questions for fear of her life. And he could use her help in people skills. You call her naive but Jon's cynical isolation with "Kill the boy" as a mantra leads to him being betrayed and assassinated.

The struggle of dreamers and idealists is to balance their imagination with discipline. It may not seem obvious in AGOT but Sansa was far more aware of consequences that could be faced in terms of station than Arya was. Sansa doesn't reject societal conventions altogether as being a lady is conforming to societal standards and is willing to learn how to function within the system and push its boundaries from within. She just rejects the extreme cynicism. Arya is an idealist too (as is Jon) and the most dangerously cynical at this point because her idealism has been absolutely crushed. Vigilantism is her way of coping and the truth is she is too young to be being the arbitrator of justice and she has killed innocents too in her fits of rage. She would end up in juvie in today's world. I don't blame her. Everyone copes differently. Kids who often end up in juvie are traumatised due to socio-economic conditions and need rehabilitation. But Sansa's method preserves some hope and Arya (and Jon) certainly could use some of that just as Sansa could use knowledge of ground reality that she has been sheltered from in her gilded cages. And that's important because it undercuts the whole grimdark perception of ASOIAF.

Cute laundromat guy was back. The one with the hot professor glasses and a head full of dark curls. Sansa sighed as she loaded her laundry into the washer and added a dollop of soap. He showed up every week, and despite Marg’s urging she hadn’t worked up the courage to talk to him. Another day of admiring him out of the corner of  her eye, then. 

She pressed the “delicates” button and jumped when she felt a gentle tap on her shoulder. 

Hot Professor blinked rapidly. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you and I apologize for bothering you, but do you have any soap I could borrow?” His brown eyes were soft and soulful and she was not falling for a random man who showed up at the Fluff and Fold on Wednesdays.

Sansa glanced at her bottle of detergent. “Well, that depends. Do you want your clothes to smell like Citrus Sunrise? Or are you too much of a man’s man?" 

Okay, so apparently she was fine with laundromat flirting after all. 

He shrugged. "I don’t mind. It’s a nice smell, actually. I’ve liked it since…” The tips of his ears turned pink. “Um, anyway Citrus Sunrise sounds great. I’m Jon, by the way.”

Sansa shook his hand. “Nice to meet you, Jon. I’m Sansa.” Do not notice how his hands are rough and calloused. Do not daydream about the sexy manual labor he does. She handed over the bottle, and their fingers touched. 

“Thanks, I owe you. I’ll pay you back,” Jon said sincerely. 

“It’s soap, Jon, it’s not a hardship, please, ask anytime you need something. Soap or fabric softener or quarters." Or me. She mercifully closed her mouth before that last part, and toyed with the end of her braid. 

Jon ducked his head. "Thanks a lot.” They each finished their laundry in silence. But he did give her a little wave when he left, and she waved back. She floated all the way back to her apartment on that wave.

The next Wednesday Sansa came armed with a boost of confidence, fueled by a pep talk from Marg and a triple shot of espresso. She’d even put on a cute yellow sundress. She gave Jon a big smile as she separated her lights and darks. Then she sauntered over.
