Vincent Van Gogh’s most famous sun-baked, madness tinged masterpieces are so ubiquitous it’s difficult to see them without also conjuring images of auction houses and dimly lit museums.
Earlier drawings, often sent from Holland as letters to VVG’s brother in Paris, are so much more interesting and portray an entirely different world of mud, graft and wind. To so strongly convey a sense of place with so few marks is something to aspire to.
