Your F/O knows it’s wrong, and they know you know that too.
They know it can be incredibly upsetting to hear somebody say something so incorrect or disturbing about someone you love so much, and they’re eternally grateful that you’d protect them and defend them so, but it’s OK.
Nobody knows your F/O the way you do. And even if it’s ’just a character’, they know how much you love them and how much they mean to you- and vice versa- and a silly little lie will never change that.
You know them inside-and-out, and they would never even think about doing or saying anything like what you saw.
If it was somebody hating on your F/O or being mean and cruel about them, your F/O will reassure you that it’s just one silly person, and they’ll never know your partner/best friend as deeply as you do.
